Not when you're measuring his play the ball, or getting off the tackled player and back in the defensive line ...

But seriously, in attack he looks decidedly sluggish compared to previous seasons.

He used to have a real acceleration and impact in the defensive line. Maybe he's concentrated on bulking up to counter injury problems' maybe he's just trying to eliminate mistakes from his game, but he has looked pedestrian so far TBH.

there's a sh*tload of improvement left in his over all game, no doubt about it and I think no one knows this more than Bubba himself, Colonel mentioned last week that he's is own worst enemy as was proven when he was really hard on himself during several training drills last Wednesday.

cannings takes a bit of putting down when he hits the line soon after he comes on - its taking 3 opposition players to put him down and he carries them a few metres ...... BUT he seems to soon tire and becomes ineffective - and he also doesn't seem to have the impact needed at the defensive line to bump guys off, he just barrels into them and trundles along - I think to be an effective barging prop these days u need to hit the line and bump off the defender that goes high with your upper body (like Fui or omerley often do)

Cannings is actually one of the quickest forwards in the club.

Cannings seems very sluggish laterally.

A report a the start of the year had Fa'aoso as the quickest forward over 40m and only second overall to Grothe .

You don't have to be quick, just hitup hard ala petero.

I've watched Fui and he doesn't fend. He usually uses his pace and leg drive but what he does which I thought was weird (although it works) is that he places his non-ball carrying arm by his side. As the tackler wraps his arms around him, he expands/lifts/push his arms out thus expanding the circumference of the defenders arms and with his strength he breaks free.

Watch a match he played in the last few weeks when he broke free a couple of times. It's a weird technique

I'm not denying that and I said he was one of the quickest not the quickest.

Obviously, he isn't taking that criticism and improving his game as yet. It doesn't matter if he is one of the fastest runners, that just shows he isn't running as fast as he can when he takes hit ups in a game.

I never said he should be in the side because of his leg speed nor should he be there because he's really trying to work on his game but at the moment our depth upfront isn't as strong as what a few people are making out so he's seen as a natural choice atleast in the 17 at the moment, I would personally start with Josh and have bubba come off the bench.

it's not cannings speed in hitting up the ball thats the problem. its his speedin defence, not line speed but i mean he doesnt seem like a keen scrambling defender who would seal a half gap with a quick sprint. Stop a quick player when he recieves a offload. that kinda thing. Big and immobile boys like Cannings leave holes in the defence. Infact i think maybe taia might make a better prop, he has got good speed, enthusiastic, incredible strength and is versitle (prop, 2nd row and lock) €

Taia is predominantly a backrower and would be better served running wide as a prop he'll get severely dominated in firstgrade.

you think, i think he is quite strong with some growing to do.

i can see him on the bench as a utility forward. with Cayless, Fui and Cordoba playing the majority of minutes at prop, A guy like taia could play 20 mins at prop a few in the back row and so on.

His defence is definitely the problem. I'm not sure if he doesn't read the play well, is slow moving aroung the ruck, or is just unfit/lazy but can definitely improve atleast 30-50% in this department.

I do like the way he hits the ball up. He's kept his game simple and hasn't tried to off load in impossible situations.

We've turned one of the best wide running second rowers into a prop in the past and have now got him back doing what he does best - running wide. We don't need to change the style of another kid who can be very damaging on the fringes as well.

The big problem that everyone has had is the lack of variety in the pack and by changing Zeb it does the same thing. As a bench prop Cannings does his job - and while he isn't at his best now its been two years since he has played this much football - time will help him.

At the present time unfortunately he is one of the better options we have through injury....

I noticed Jeremy Latimore has been named in PL.

I haven't seen him play before but have heard he is a schoolboy rep who has a massive future. Statiscally, he is tall and weighs around 115kg.

Has anyone actually seen him in action? I will have my eyes glued on him this w/end to see what he can do, although wouldn't expect too much seeing it's only his first game.

I'm pretty sure he started a few games in PL for the sharks last and kept players like Phil lualiai and Dayne Western away from the starting pack and those 2 are now playing firstgrade.

And all I said was for all the leg speed and hard work he has not improved as yet. I made no mention of his position in the team.
