I'd promote the game as much as possible to gain more interest

I am sure the game is being premoted all the time. I'd like to see how it is being premoted. Could this be a job of a select team of people to premote Forum 7s? Is it difficult to do so, maybe in relation to the game being hosted on LU (other forums not wanting LU being premoted on their forums)?

Me thinks the NSW captain is going to get his arse kicked by the canetoads.

QUEEENSSLAAAANDDDERRR!

I am vice captain.

Basically, the F7s relies on what we draw from the these forums.

There's a fair bit of in-house advertising already. LU has a healthy audience nowdays and there's not too many places on the site where you can't see a link to the F7s website.

The F7s also have prime position on the forums main message board.

We also have it as part of our external adversting in Rugby League Review magazine and it appears on some of the merchandise.

But we're always looking for ways to improve upon this. A select team is great idea - however they would have to work closely with the site management.

I guess we could do with some sort of site-wide advertising splurge during the off-season. And for now, we could add another banner somewhere.

Essentially it is the forum membership which makes the F7s a success. These forums are getting 10 or more new members a week... and in turn, that's the base strength of the F7s. Perhaps we could make the F7s part of the automatic welcome message new members get...?
We don't want to overload people with too much when they join the forums, but its worth considering.

But at the end of the day, the cornerstone of recruitment remains with the captains. And there appears to be a good base membership to get you started.

As a new player to the game, i have found it pretty well organised, and the rules fair to all. I like the named teams, and i like the 3 reserves for a home game, you need some advantage since, in case u havent noticed, theres very small crowds at F7s games.

I do think that a lot of articles are probably marked to high, that average essays do get 80ish.

Still, so far, i am impressed an enjoying being a part of it.

Also the squads on the home page might need to be updated (im not there :))

I think first and foremost the 7’s is a game that is there for a bit of fun and enjoyment. I know when I was playing I couldn’t wait for the game to start and then the results to be posted. It seems reading most of the comments on these pages that it remains that way, and I have to say (no sucking up here by the way) that the game has been promoted and supported very well by LU compared to the first two seasons I played in. Willow and the other admin have put in a lot of effort to make it that way.
Couple of points raised.
Two refs. I think that it’s a good idea and in fact was tried in the initial season of sevens, the problem is twofold. Lack of refs (we only have three full-time refs) and trying to get both refs together to collate a score. I think it could be tried for the finals, or maybe Grand Final. On the marking side of things. To an extent the comments about most scores being around the 80’s with the occasional ones in the middle 70’s is true. That is because most of the time there is very little between the submissions. When your marking, some pieces will be marked down because they are bad grammatically, and some because they are put together poorly, or have a weak content, when you look at the two together one cancels out the other. Just on the comments about spelling and grammar. Personally, when marking if a piece is a good read but has a few spelling mistakes then IMO it’s not a spelling competition so I’ll let them go. If however it makes the piece difficult reading then I’ll say so and mark it down, other refs place a different value on it, and that is where the poster needs to be aware. The comment about football content is a good point, and I have to say I’ve bordered on marking down articles that were thin on it, and have done so in the past as have the other refs. However one that comes to mind recently, when reading it could have been about a game of league, but turned out to be something entirely apart from the game, paintball. The fact that the same principles are used in both games for me made it relevant. It’s a matter of opinion. I think reading through all this though it’s pretty clear that a few minor changes are all some are asking to be looked at.

Exactly the point I raised with Madunit about 2 referees.

Two refs mark it. If the difference between the two results is less than 5, average the scores.

If it is more than 5, then they need to discuss it.

If people think there is a bias, the referee could simply copy and paste the essays into word WITHOUT looking at the author, mark them, find the correct owners, and add up the scores.

That is how I mark anyway, and as far as I know the other refs do the same, there's a thread about exactly that somewhere, I'll try find the link.

What a suck up!

The articles score way too high and need to be changed. Scoring over 80 should mean you did an awesome job, not just submitted an article.

Its called 'marking blind'. Most refs do it (as antonius said he does). I mark blind when called up as ref.

There's no bias. Sore losers have reared up from time to time, which is unfortunate but it does happen. If someone is convinced that they are being treated unfairly, no amount of logic will tell them otherwise. And the occasional surprise ref decision will happen as well... but that's normal in all competitions and tends to even out over a season.

For the most part, I think the referees get it right. Its good to read that the vast majority of those polled think the ref marking is fair and most rate the referees well.

Yeah, you're quite right in bringing that up. I'm trying to find time to finish this. I've done about a third of it.

I find half a cask gets me there.

I basically mark blind although sometimes I know who's post I'm marking. Doesn't affect me.

I must say it would be more interesting to have greater scoring variation, but as Antonius has posted above, there is often not much variation in the standard or the styles.

As for comments, it usually pretty late when I mark (not neccesarily when I post results) and I try and stick with simple info. If anyone wants some advice on how to improve their work, ask someone else....:D

Nah mate, if I do another one it won't be until next year.

At the end of the season we've got the annual awards thingee though, which is where you get to have your say (vote) on favourite articles, rookie of the year. etc.
