Channel 9 news lead in........after the cricket.......

"Aussie tourists caught in a Fijian Cyclone".

What about the f**kING locals you heartless bastards?

Suity

I agree with this sentiment. I was amazed to see the same things in the Spanish, Dutch, Finnish and Chilean media when we lived over there. It seems that reporting back about possible nationals being injured and/or killed is more important than just reporting the story.

Although I suppose if you know a friend or family member is in a specific place when a tragedy occurs, you'd like to hear, "No Aussies were harmed," for your own peace of mind...But it doesn't make this trend any better. Shameful, really.

Yeh, well media organizations realise that they will rarely go broke peddling nationalism at a real dumb-ass level. I think its natural that there will be some level of bias towards the home market, but the level of idiotic jingoism seems to be getting worse (and not just in this country).

Absolutely. It is very shameful - by all means, mention that Aussies were involved in a terrorist bombing or got affected by a cyclone, but don't make that the priority of the story...

It's that whole 'it could happen to you' thing.

Unless you live in the third world you're not going to identify with the plight of some guy whose village washed away in a tsunami. That's not something that is likely to happen to you.

You reckon there's much news in the third world about retrirees losing their nest egg when the share market crashes? They don't give a f**k.

It's the same thing.
