Obviously you don't have kids. Couples plan to be without income when the baby comes. They already get assistance by way of parental leave pay, baby bonus etc. What they can't afford is the $120 per day for child care that has to be paid for years and years after mum goes back to work - if she can afford it. Some mums who get min wage don't bother cos after paying $5/600 per week in child care, they end up working for little or no reward. Mums want the whole long term child care issue looked at. Not a cash payment brought about cos Tony was told that he was losing female voters.

Spot on Gronk.

No one pays that much for a kid to go to child care though Gronk. Minimum 50% rebate (up to $7500pa), plus more rebates available depending on circumstance. I was speaking to the owner of the child care centre my kid went to and there is a vast difference in the amount people pay depending on area. He has two centres, which charge the same daily fee of $80. Most of those that attend the centre in the Hills pay 50% of the fee (so about $40/day), whilst those in the South West centre pay the absolute minimum because of the other rebates they get (averages less than $20/day supposedly)

Long day care rates are much higher than you quoted. Yes you do get $7500 ($150/w) child care rebate. The child care benefit is means tested. Two parents working on $75k each and they miss out.

Well argued Avenger. Did the early 80s de-regulation of the Aust. economy not happen for you? Each party has had their 'ups and downs'...and yeh the Libs have on average been better....but glib statements like 'always been better managers of our economy' are curious, to say the least.

Howard/Costello did well in their early years (very well perhaps), then squandered the biggest free kick (i.e. the mining boom....which was driven completely by external forces) we've seen for some time. Rather than match temporary increases in inflows with infrastructure projects of similar duration, they built in various effective tax cuts, ridiculous superannuation concessions etc. You want to tell me that is sound economic management? Howard's farewell party, at the very least, set the scene for our current position.

Smiling Pete and Howard did introduce initiatives in relation to superannuation which in hindsight was not a good move due to the sub prime scam which affected nearly all of our Superannutaion share portfolios. They were duped and unfortunately did not see it coming. They did however try and do it in order to avoid this current situation where now people need to work more in order to gain a pension. I think the mining boom peaked whilst Labor was in power and more was wasted on their watch. I could be wrong though.

Pretty sure the rebate isn't means tested, so you get $7500 per year per child.
So if you are paying $600 per week you get $150 back, only costing you $450.
So if you have a couple of kids in childcare it only ends up costing about $900 per week.

Yep the Rebate of $7500 isn't means tested. Further assistance which is called Child Care Benefit is means tested.

as childcare isn't seen as a work related expense this $900 is after tax. Your actual salary needs to be about $60,000 just to break even

What ever happened to one for mum, one for dad & one for the country?

Hockey's thought aging workforce meant forcing aged people to work

I'm going to have several beers at the Wig and Pen this evening followed by Gorgonzola Pizza and Chianti.

I hope your only drinking rare hand made craft beers before that pizza. The Gorgonzola I assume with be made from organic milk made by virgin Italian maidens from Cortina ?

See my example above.

I think there needs to be a limit on the family home that is fair. I agree we shouldnt be making people leave there area and support circle but they also shouldnt have a house worth millions. And also different areas have houses worth different amounts.

Maybe they could knock the house down and build a smaller one. Or sell bits of it.

Oh, ok. So which comparisons are valid...only those that suit your argument?

The US is not a valid comparison because it does what it wants and the world bends over for it. If only we had the ability to do that...

Sure, the UK might be a valid comparison but it's only 1 country.

***

There's no way in Hell I wanna be paying $30bn/year in interest on a $667bn debt while still running deficits and this is exactly what Labor left us with.

I don't give a f**k about any other country, I care about this one. I want our money being spent on sustainable services, not paying interest on an unsustainable debt.

If you've got a way to cut 10-year debt in half then go ahead and lay it out. With details, please.

If not, then take your ignorant, moronic OECD bullshit and f**k right off.

Well, that's the only sort of beer that the Wig sell:)

The gorgonzola pizza, however, is sold by a place that are very much at the 'cheap and cheerful' end of things, and I suspect that it's more likely to have been made by Italian-Australian maidens in the back seat of a Cortina.

Methinks HJ needs to spend less time listening to Alan Jones.

THERE IS NO BUDGET EMERGENCY

There’s a saying that goes something like, “if you repeat a lie often enough it becomes the truth.” Tony and Joe work to this maxim—impressively creating a climate of emergency by hammering home the same lines ad infinitum. While the image below does a great job of illustrating how wrong they are, how do we really stack up? Bloomberg has a great tool that compares all the countries using IMF data:

-Australia’s gross national debt as a percentage of GDP (2014) is 29.2%
-We're the 47th highest debt from a list of 58 countries
-We're the best performing first world country
-Japan ranks 1st with 242%
-The US, 6th at 107%
-A better example is Denmark, 31st with just under 48%—CONSIDERED TO BE LOW DEBT!

If voters are stupid enough to turn away from one party because the other party shrieked MYSOGYNIST loud enough then they're stupid enough to be swayed back by the PPL. Looks like good politics to me.

Remember, if a politician wins an election it's because the majority of f**kwits voted for him/her. Once you can accept that you will accept why politicians have to tell lies and pander to populist sentiment.
