what do you merkins think of the martin place seige people getting paid for TV interviews?

I say good luck to em .... you go through something that shit then good for you if you can get some $$s for it from TV stations willing to pay up

I reckon its a bit rough that righteous merkins want to criticise them over it - none of them went through it, they've got no right to judge

Yeh, I'm not 100% sure. I certainly don't begrudge them the chance of some $$. Not sure it's a great thing that it's happening before the Coronial enquiry though.

why is that so bad? .... the sad merkin who did it is dead .... I don't really understand how badly anything they say will harm any inquiry

I agree with the Strider.
I went into the city this morning with the missus. We had a coffee somewhere. It could just as well been at the wrong cafe on the wrong day.

Because we might want to learn for the future from what went right / wrong in the negotiation and at the end. And that may or may not rely on evidence from the people inside.

how can it not rely on what the people inside have to say? ... they know what happened in there - no other f**ker does

I don't really buy that they will talk it out of perspective .... and I would hope that people involved in the inquiry are good enough at their jobs to do the right thing

I dunno - maybe I an just nieve and don't understand the process???

you know the 50 over version of cricket is struggling when they can't even get a remotely decent crowd to a single game involving australia in tasmainia

Well, why have a Coronial process other than to gather objective evidence on what actually happened? The hostages who were there at the end are the only non-police witnesses of the order of events, what happened where etc. The more sources of evidence you have, and the greater the objectivity of that evidence, the greater the chance that the Coronial enquiry finds out exactly what happened, and what we should consider doing the same / differently if there is a 'next time'.

If people are encouraged (or just feel that they need to) to sex up their story for a TV show, this may affect either what they say in the enquiry, or the Coroner's opinion as to the accuracy of that evidence, and how he/she deals with conflicting evidence.

Again, I don't begrudge the victims making a quid out of this. But some people seem to confuse the public's interest with the public interest.

hmmmm .... I don't get it

you'd hope the hostages would have been debriefed and interviewed already - why leave it forever and let em forget shit .... and you'd hope the people involved in the inquiry wouldn't be influenced by a tv interview ... but again - I'm no expert

Had some show off who big notes more than me knock on my front door wanting to buy my house. I agreed to let him see it next week. He told me he was a legitimate buyer who had admired it for the past year etc etc.

Anyway the family especially the kids were not the same all day. I planted some clumping bamboo recently and have seen it grow and started getting all nostalgic about what the wife and I have created. Then it came to me. I don't need to sell, I built this f**king house, its full brick, only 18 months old and has in it everything that I have ever wanted.

I telephoned him this afternoon and told him, sorry but no sale.

I feel good now.

Hope you feel better Avenger that you got this off your chest.

Suity.

I do brother, sincerely. Moving is very stressful and don't start me on that f**king stamp duty rort.

PS I don't have Facebook, twitter, instagram or any other shit so I like sharing with similar minded merkins like you. Its very therapeutic. Isn't that what a off topic thread is about? By the way when is that f**kwit Maroubra Eel coming back? I like Pou now and need other people to pick on.

Absolutely spot on re the time taken to get such an inquiry underway.

And yes, they've been interviewed and debriefed....by the same people who are part of the subject of the inquiry and who themselves are only human.

Here's a hypothetical for you....what if a former hostage's TV interview contradicts what they said when initially interviewed by police? Then they are asked to give evidence at the inquiry, and revert to the original testimony. How useful is the evidence now?

The best thing we can get out of this is as full an understanding of exactly what went down as is possible, to inform future situations where this may help. It's not about blame for any 'errors' or 'oversights' or anything like that. The findings may well be that the response from law enforcement was basically perfect. But, you want as much triangulating evidence as possible to a) get it right and b) for the public to have confidence that the inquiry 'got it right'.

Anyway, I wish em all the best.

Good on ya, Avenger.

....and just for you....I was just walking through a busy street market when I passed a shop selling what looked (to the ignorant such as me) like Balkan handicrafts. I didn't stop but caught a fragment of the conversation between a customer and the stallholder as I passed "....and the bloody Serbs, if it wasn't for them I'd be a millionaire." Had to laugh.

Fair enough and good for you.
I'm in the process of making equally stressful decisions. Hope it works out for you.
