The intent of punishment is to serve as a deterrent against related acts of crime. Soft Westeners are a lot easier to control through the threat of such pansy-arse punishments as house arrest or weekend detention. In countries where people are hardier they need to threaten much harsher punishments (including the death penalty administered through 'barbaric' or otherwise painful means) in order to deter the population from breaking the law.

Well, actually, no. The death penalty is not working as a means of controlling drug-trafficking in Indonesia, for example - simply because, for every one individual that gets caught, hundreds get through customs (or are able to bribe their way out of it). The death penalty remains in place largely because the governments are too politically lazy or don't want to (or can't afford to) spend the money on better policing of their laws in the first place. If more people were caught, that would be a far greater deterrent than executing every one in a thousand offenders.

Typical Liberal response. Make a mistake and then put a spin on it.

Appreciate your weak attempt at humour, actually wasn't really watching Q&A ( was setting up junior league trials in my home office) , asked my wife who the dope was and she told me it was Shorten

Who am I to disagree, and listening to this weeks response to debt and servicing by Shorten and Bowen, how can so much stupidity be based in 2 people, and to think Swann was also a numbskull. Just shows if you recruit from within the Labour movement , what you end up with

Don't think that Abbott escapes criticism, completely missed the boat with what should have been an easy sell on the budget, despite the left wing media bias in Canberra, he failed miserably

Now I am waiting for the Western Sydney Wombats to win a game, and then their fanboys will be back telling us all they will cure cancer and solve world peace :):)

Yeah good old Indonesia, have a death penalty for smugggling drugs even only a small quanity yet let their military slaughter and torture innocent civilians previously in East Timor and now in West Papua. f**ken hypocrites!!!!

Wouldnt surprise me if the head drug pins in Indonesia are either the Military or protected by the Military.

The liberals get a donation of $250k from the "Australian Salary Packaging Industry" then after the election re-instate a leasing loop hole labour was trying to close:

http://m.smh.com.au/business/the-ec...rnments-fiscal-integrity-20150217-13hccz.html

So much for the Libs fair budget

And, in the nature of our deeply adversarial politics, the Liberal Party immediately promised to scrap the scrapping. Apparently it would be a disaster for the car industry.

Yep the Libs have this concern before the election then after the election cut support to car manufacturing.

You cant blame the Libs for that one, I have it on good authority (Delboy's missus) that it was actually Shorten that did all that.

I know that Delboy will blow a gasket by me saying this, but it is apparent that his mate Tony has no problem honouring deals to industry and foreign governments (Jap subs) to shore up his political position , yet when it comes to honouring promises to the voters - nup.

The hypocrisy of it all is that he got in purely on the single Juliar "carbon tax" backflip.

Now all that Alan Jones and his minions have left in their defence of the LNP is "yeah he might be a liar, but he's a good bloke. Anyway, for all his failings, he's a better option than Shorten".

For mine it's a bit like opting for Morts over Keating for halfback. Get rid of them both FFS.

So true Gronk.

What I HOPE the pollies are learning is that we (the voters) aren't dopes, and can share information in many, many ways - we don't rely on their media mates spinning them in a positive light anymore.
SO, if they make a promise, they better keep it. Don't tell us you'll do something, then not do it (Kruddy, Juliar, Abutt), if you say you will do x,y,z then you need to do x,y,z. And doing the exact opposite of x,y,z is especially bad form.

Gronk, I care about the country and my kids and grandkids future

If you let the idiots like Shorten and Bowen escape unscathed , and if you saw him on the Richo/Jones show you would despair, he is transparently idiotic . the fact that even the Gov of the RBA and head of Treasury are sending warnings about the debt spiral, and they answer that its all rhetoric is insane

As I am older than most on here, the debacle that is labour will not impact on me so much, perhaps even assist me in a sense, but if you think the LNP is bad, beware the alternative - it is far, far worse. under Labour our credit rating fell, was moved back to AAA under the Howard/Costello regime, when you consider that Labour has not run a budget surplus in god knows how long is frightening, you might hate Abbott/Hockey but please consider the alternative - fmd!!!!

Gronk, don't make light of the issue

It should not be about little grabs, its about the country's future, and at their worst fiscal management , the LNP are far better than Labour. we are all about NIMBY, selfish individuals and not looking at the big picture

Sorry, but Abbott has failed, but you have to consider what the alternate is, and its terrifying, I did like some things Keating did - but this left wing mob are hopeless
