For a government who are all about jobs and growth, they have sent confidence into a downward spiral. That is his government's doing. Undeniable.

I'm from the very 'old school' of thinking where Labour sux at economic management, and Liberal is supposedly better. I have a hard time seeing the positives of the current government on the economic management front, and shudder to think how bad it would be if Shorten was in charge.
Surely Abbott and co are gooorne? Based on history, things will probably get worse...

We're screwed. Time to become a Kiwi?

Agree with Shorten. If all Labor has to offer is him or Albo, then we're just going to have to make do with the Libs (what did I say !!!). Abbott, Hockey and his ideological churchy mates have to go however. It pains me to say it but I think Julie Bishop should get the gig if the notion of Malcolm Turnbull worries the pants off the LNP (cos he's just left of centre).

Due to the nature of Australian politics, economic reform requires bipartisan support and Labor/Greens still think (or more to the point, their voters think) the best way to stimulate the economy is to increase government spending and send it deeper into debt. They won't allow budget measures that reduce costs for government and create space for private industry.

That's where your business confidence has gone.

Great answer Gronk. Just remember business confidence doesn't come from socialism. That debate has already been settled.

Seriously Poops ?

Thats your response that all Labour want to do is increase govt spending ?

I doubt you could be further from the truth.

I do agree that Labour are screwed while Shorten is the leader, but if they ever find a decent leader, Abbott will be stuffed.

all politicians are merkins.

I find politics to be the most insane, useless and trivial argument of all time. its the biggest myth. They all lie to reel the voters in then do the exact same thing the opposition would do if they were elected because its what the economy/Australia/public are leaning towards, there is no evidence that if Gillard won for her second term things would be any different.

id argue that politicians, especially prime ministers, have no control over the direction in which their party is taking Australia.

I reckon Shorten will beat Abbott.

It's kind of like how Abbott beat Gillard - when you have someone who almost everyone hates, then it's hard not to win.
Although Abbott isn't doing as poorly as Gillard was in the opinion polls (yet?)

Abbott won Stephen Bradbury style and did not need to promise anything. Spent his entire time in opposition sledging the LP for their "there will be no carbon tax" guff, yet stupidly decided to tell everyone that there will be no taxes, cuts to pensions, ABC etc. Why ? Stupidity. I doubt that anyone other than one eyed LP supporters see him now as honest or trustworthy. He has a massive problem with the trust issue.

Abbott offered punters an honest alternative to the LP and has f**ked it up royally by breaking promises and going after pensioners and Joe Public with petrol excise etc. Joe Public might not understand everything, but they smell a rat when there are austerity measures aimed at low income earners, yet a PPLS propping up women earning 6 figures.

Dumb.

I saw on twitter that Hadley consoled Abbott the other morning during an interview by saying that the only way that NewsPoll could arrive at figures like those on Monday (LP 10% lead) was that they asked a question that the pollees (sp) could not understand ...

And that's what's wrong with politics. The 'leader' is irrelevant other than to those (probably the sad, useless majority) who want their political soap opera.

Party ideology is what matters when it comes to policy and economic management.

You're putting the cart before the horse. This "leader" is the driver of the LNP's current ideology.

This is where ideological blindness creeps in, even the shrewdest of politicians can come unstuck. He thought he was bulletproof and his ultra conservative stance, delivered to the public in an ambush of dishonesty, will be the root of his undoing.

No he isn't, he is a slave to it. They have to be what their voters want or they don't get picked. This is democracy for f**k's sake - rule by the lowest common denominator.
