The Bird Issue

If he were off contract in 2022....maybe take a punt for a year. We are still on a shoestring budget for 2021. Even if we did have the 500k up our sleeve I’d rather spend it upgrading guys like Talakai...Toby and Royce etc. These guys are the future of our club imo. Jack couldn’t f**k off quick enough. I barely rate him higher than Val in the loyalty stakes.
Next year we should have about 1M extra than what we have this year. 750K cap fine plus Xerri's wage, should be aroubd the 1M Mark.
Bird has openly said he wanted to stay and he was ready to do the deal, Flanno told him they'll work it out "this week" and didn't come back to him until 3 months later, by that time others had shown way more interest than Flange. So maybe the loyalty stakes anger should be directed at someone else.

Eddie, my good man. I’m not sure whether anyone has made any claims, but may I say this.

If I had the choice between Shaun Johnson and Jack Bird for a GF and both were fully fit and available, I would take Bird.

I am not suggesting this is your position, but I think that time has clouded people’s judgement on how good Jack Bird was as a footy player in both attack and defence. He is an outstanding talent.

I would likely select Josh Morris over Bird, but really hold them both in the same high regard.

With the right support, I believe he can play his very best footy.
Bird is a straight up footballer, it doesnt matter if we are top or not, he is going to play football.

Cant buy a guy on what he did 2016.
Have to buy him on what he did 2020.
Busted.
And it wasnt just an unlucky year.
Busted the year before.
And...the year before that.

If we bought a guy with that cv over the last 3 years we are irresponsible with money as its just a gamble.
We arent in a position to say "in hindsight we shouldnt have risked it."
The 2018 issue I believe was mismanagement at broncs i was close to a board member I asked about Bird after Broncs lost early game when he would play said he was 3 weeks away injured he was shocked when he was picked later that day.
They played him busted it came back on them

Also remember last broncs we signed who we got on cheap worked out well

I dont know if Morris has it in him

If we bring bird back, you need a coach that he respects to be coaching him

I 100% believe that the Broncos did NOT allow him to play the way he should play.

They played him at left centre - his best spot WAS right centre, but I'm warming to him being the NEW LOCK Cam Murray-style player.

They played him as a battering ram (with the hope of a little finesse) - that suits Jesse Ramien, but NOT Jack Bird...

It seems that they selected him too early in the recovery (from injury) process.

So, yes, I would take a punt. But I would dearly love to see Moylan gone.

I'll just lay this on the table.

How many of us whilst watching certain players go around this year and last just face palmed and said I hope this bloke gets up from that tackle .... or .... shit it looks like he /she has hurt himself/herself again in the tackle.

Honestly I am over depending on stuck together players and hoping they last a few games in a row. I can appreciate a bloke copping an injury, shit it happens, but with our mob it is the same same over and over again.

Do we really need to bank on another 'maybe he will last' player.

Still a Nay from me.

Yeah but the ones we have are paid a mill a year, if you get bird at half that or cheaper it becomes a more interesting proposition

That is assuming contracts like Dugan, Moylan, Johnson and Fifita aren't on backended deals and they very well may be.

I assume all of Xerri's cash went straight to Rudolph who we otherwise would have lost.

One year deal only, and no matter if he is playing like a champion do we resign him till end of 2021, and any further max 2 years or he can look elsewhere

Nah no anger mate.... I’ll always be grateful for the contribution both those guys made to 2016. Can you imagine the shit Birdy would be copping on here right now if Flanno has managed to resign him back then. I would like to think we’ve learnt a bit of a lesson from Moylan. Other problem is that these guys that are used to earning 800-900k plus at their peak and become injury prone need to understand that their value decreases substantially along the way. This is not putting shit on their ability as footballers as they’re both gifted.... more a reflection of the unfortunate run of injuries and the impact it has on their value to any club.

The other issue for me is this year we have had a record number of young guys coming through and many of these Jets players would be on pretty much minimum contracts. I’d hate to risk losing some of them to take a punt on Birdy. I might be wrong but I thought the salary cap reduction was around 350k per year for 2 years?

They decided to pay it all off this year mate, hence why we had to offload players.
