AFL has stomped on us with their latest broadcast deal.

The NRL is not taken seriously as a national competition. I know you think Australia starts at Bondi and ends at Penrith but the people who want to advertise don't.

Broadcasters wanted bris3 but not Perth. Ppl jumping to false conclusion.

West Coast Pirates next in 2027

Adelaide Bears in 2030

South Brisbane Firehawks in 2032

That is where the comp needs to be within the next decade or so if its any hope of clawing back ground on afl not being relegated to permanent number 2 position in the sporting landscape

Australian TV and radio value
AFL 16/18 clubs across 5 capital cities $593mill
NRL 13/17 clubs across 3 capital cities $370mill

Pretty much a no brainer from where I'm sitting!

Given the lack of investors, Govt support and general presence of NRL in Adelaide, if ever the Bears where coming back it would make sense for them to do so in Adelaide, unless we want to invest significant money and time growing the game there.

..but TV didn't want Perth. TV just does what advertisers want..

Timing of deal
too simplistic

-timing is one key part, Vlandys signed up at a time when he shouldn't of, extended without going to open market and basically signed an incredibly dud deal in hindsight
-content amount, NRL should already be at 18 teams. We had the chance to start this in 2013! Brisbane2 in at long last now time to get aggressive with expansion and have 10 games to sell by time the 2033 deal roles around
- People doing the deals, clearly Gil is a much better negotiator than Vlandys. Be that incompetence or conflict of interest remains to be seen.
- Australian metro city reach. Time to fix this one with expansion to Perth then Adelaide.

If you follow only what tv wants you end up where we are. In fact if you did what TV wanted we wouldn't have even got Brisbane 2 now, they are paying nothing for it so clearly didn't want it!
As it happens TV does want metro reach in the 5 key Australian markets. As has just been proven by the bidding war by 3 parties for the AFL rights.
As does advertisers proven by the massive difference in competition naming rights value.

6k watching in Perth doesn't help reach. TV knows this wanting bris2 but not Perth. Bris3 before Perth if you worried about TV money.

Hahaha now you arguing against ursrlf first saying we need metros for advertisers & now saying we shouldn't follow TV.

Think about this; with brissy team TV rating there is 150k. Without is 90k. Perth & Adelaide not adding many viewers on gem. Bris3 more worthwhile

Bris2 was a no brainer for everyone, should have happened ten years ago!
Guess what GWS and Sun are hardly setting the Tv ratings alight yet TV was happy to just pay $200mill more than ours for a competition that features them. Go figure!
Your current Perth FTA TV audience measure is far too simplistic and feels like a convenient cherry pick of one data set to argue your point.
Bris3 may come, it shouldn't be needed but NRL has screwed expansion up, again by being dictated to by a TV company. But it wont come for at least a decade. Perth then Adelaide then Bris3 is what needs to happen.

What do storm average in Melbourne?! 20k?! Melbourne is city of 5 million. What is Perth?!

GWS and Sun create extra game. There you go. Another reason for difference..

Nope Im saying dont be dictated to by TV. They want the most product for the cheapest price, that's in their best interests.
Whats in our best interests is to be able to sell a competition with a 5 metro city relevance that has numerous TV companies falling over each each other to buy it.

Again dont take my word for it, just reflect on what has happened for the AFL who have that footprint. $370millv$593mill, $12millv21mill. The figures dont lie!

Storm are one of the most watched teams on TV. Have one of the biggest sponsorship portfolios. Are of incredible value to our tv deals, Id hate to think what that $370mill would be without them! There's been a massive move away from Nine for NRL viewers, in growth markets it happened much sooner due to shocking game coverage by Nine. We used to get the FTA games on replay at midnight and wouldn't even get that if there was a golf or tennis tournament on!
Until we can see the Fox/Kayo ratings split by state we wont ever know the true picture. I havent watched a regular season game on Nine for 15 years!

Yep as I said one of the areas we lack is content compared to AFL. But if you're going to have new content to sell have new content that includes new large metro markets as part of it to maximise the value.

Why are you so obsessed with FTA ratings? Do you work for Nine or something?

Not in Melbourne. Those viewers in NSW & qld and mainly because storm always in finals & best time slots.

Kayo/fox would be mainly NSW & qld because that's how world works so don't hide behind that chestnut..
