St George Illawarra can confirm the club's Board of Directors convened on Tuesday morning to discuss the future of coach Paul McGregor, following the Dragons' poor start to the 2020 season.

The Dragons' board have confirmed McGregor will continue on as St George Illawarra coach.

"Although the board acknowledges the club's performances so far throughout 2020 have been unacceptable; we will continue to support Paul, his staff and the team through these tough times," Dragons Chairman Andrew Gordon said.

"We are committed to Paul as coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons and look forward to seeing him right the wrongs of the opening month of the current campaign.

"We are a club that stands by our people when under pressure. This is a time for loyalty, strength and commitment from the players, coach, board and staff to improve."

The Dragons will be making no further comment regarding McGregor at this stage.

Albert Einstein is credited with saying, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result." These guys are definitely not Einsteins.

We were a better club when we used our local juniors.Bailey Ryles Timmins Thompson etc.
Did not have to go out into the market place and pay overs for has beens or because we are desperate. We have local juniors so use them.Give them a go Mary what have you got to lose, obviously not your job that's safe.

Conspiracy with the owners win dragging the st.george brand down with the steelers. No longer are steelers part of the merger now they sold out to wincorp. St george should stand alone and move in a new direction .
Would love this to happen J.moz. Perhaps we should call V'Landys.

The Chooks used to be called the transit lounge they eventually turned it around. Took some time and hardwork and changes at the top

Our Club is finished
Retire the St George Dragons name
And call these losers the
Illawarra Steelers
I have never been so embarrassed in my life.
Now we know why Brian Johnson left !
Exactly! Brian knew that this was going to happen and he must now be a relieved man but at the same time not happy as I'm sure he would have liked to see us winning games like us all.

Yes a long time but they certainly got there and looking good for grand final win number 3 in successive years. Can we attain this over time? Probably, but only if there are sweeping changes from top to bottom which will unfortunately take too long which makes watching us play uninteresting for years to come.

While entirely predictable, this statement has so much crap in it: loyalty is a fine quality but not when it is misplaced or corrupted by favoritism. The "tough times" are not caused by some mysterious outside force. And no mention of loyalty to the supporters!

McGregor, aided and abbeted by Lose Corporation is the problem, not the solution.

An honest and competent administration would recognize this and act quickly to address the root cause.
Instead we get this mealy mouthed dribble designed to whitewash the whole issue and preserve the comfortable status quo.

The statement should have read:

"We are a club that stands by our mates when they are plainly incompetent. This is a time for favouritism, nepotism and insincerity from the players, coach, board and staff to continue."

The Dragons will not be communicating with fans regarding McGregor (or anything else for that matter) at this stage (or ever).

Despite all that has been written about St George, Illawarra, StGI. BOD's, Gordon's, reviews, no vision, incompetent, no plan etc etc etc it very obvious to me that there is a clear plan and an end goal and the BOD and Gordon's are firmly steering St GI in that direction.

The actions undertaken yesterday are not those of a club with no plan they are IMO the deliberate actions of a club with a very clear plan and they are not willing / going to share that plan with anyone outside the inner-sanctum which has been incredibly water tight.

We can whinge all we like and think of them all being incompetent etc etc but it will not alter anything 1 iota and we will be given what we are going to get at a time of their choosing.

Very deliberate actions by very determined people who firmly believe the end result will far outweigh any pain endured along the way.

Let's hope so OT. Surely their agenda and vision is something they have been discussing and planning together for weeks now.

Unfortunately DD I suspect their agenda & vision isn't something that will please any long term St George fans and in absolute fairness I am sure many of the former Illawarra supporters are equally disgusted with the onfield performances.

Whilst it is now a JV no doubt the St George die hards want to see something very different to what is being trotted out. I'd even go so far as to say that other than having the word Illawarra on the jersey and promo gear many think everything else should be Big Red V as that after all is where the richest part of the history is.

There is no doubt St George BOD members and officials have played a significant role in incapacitating the once great stand alone club and their lack of ability / willingness to halt the decline taking place before and right now is culpable.

However the simple fact is the Gordon's have plenty of $$$ and could intervene right now and at least halt the downward spiral and then put a rescue plan together and explain it to the faithful.

Instead they continue on in the current vain and meanwhile the fan base is forced to endure and somehow remain faithful to a brand that is now flagging behind every other club in the competition and neither the Gordon's nor the BOD make any positive statement about our future and somehow want us to accept / believe it is in good hands at both administrative and coaching levels.

You show good vision OT with what you have stated. I am at a complete loss as to why the Gordon's have not spent any more money on the club to bring it up to the best brand in the league.

I know that they injected millions to get us out of debt, but surely after doing so you would think they would continue to inject more funds to make the club more powerful in terms of the overall benefit of the club which would result in greater performances from better coaches (not including Mary of course) and players and be recognised as the hallmark of Australian Rugby League. I know that as a die hard Dragons supporter and if I had the riches of the Gordon's I would be putting in my hard earned bucks to have the best leagues club.

Why are not the Gordon's thinking this way?

Well we should note that:
Illawarra was in debt to SGI by approx. $6m
SGI was in debt to the NRL by approx. $6m
Illawarra were also in debt to the Gordons / WIN Corp and this debt was forgiven as part of the deal

So if St George called in the Illawarra debt and ceased the Illawarra shares as payment in full and then accepted the Paul Smith higher bid of $10m St George would have been able to pay the NRL the outstanding $6m and still have $4m in the bank to spend how they like. There new partner would have brought to the club professional management with a desire to be top of the ladder and win, win, win.

Doust went with WIN Corp and the Gordons because he had secured the tenure of the hand full of old boys living the good life with plumb SGI jobs. I call nepotism to the extreme and believe the NRL should conduct an investigation. Where are the investigative reporters now?
