I know Nolan has expressed distaste at re-using Penguin, but I'd actually love to see him played by somebody like Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It would be difficult to separate him from the hammier background - but a rich sociopath would certainly be a different villain for Batman to go up against.

Please God no Penguin. The new Batman movies have an element of realism which seperates it from the other sh*thouse movies. Penguin would send us back down that path IMO.

While it seems certain they won't ever use Penguin, anyone familiar with his background and consequent reinventions would agree that he's certainly doable in a way that isn't totally over the top.

In essence he's a perfectly sane, wealthy criminal. His love of birds doesn't need to be as over the top as using them in battle, and his 'high tech umbrellas' can certainly be cut down to one particularly vicious one which would tie in with his 'gentleman of crime' persona.

That said, I'm most excited to see what other villains the franchise brings to the big screen - as they've expressed an interest in exploring previously unshown villains.

BATMAN blockbuster The Dark Knight won't be screened in Chinese cinemas, Warner Bros says.

The studio said in a statement overnight that the acclaimed film - the second highest-grossing movie in US box-office history - would be canned in China, with "cultural sensitivities" cited as one of the reasons for the no-show.

"Based on a number of pre-release conditions that are being attached to The Dark Knight as well as cultural sensitivities to some elements of the film, we have opted to forego a theatrical release of the film in China," the statement said.

It was not clear what "cultural sensitivities" were at issue but the movie includes an action sequence shot in Hong Kong where Batman, played by Christian Bale, apprehends a Chinese money-launderer.

In 2006, Chinese authorities barred the release of Hollywood movie Memoirs of a Geisha amid speculation its portrayal of Japanese courtesans played by Chinese actresses could spark public controversy.

Taiwanese director Ang Lee's gay cowboy drama Brokeback Mountain was also denied a release in China.

The late Australian actor Heath Ledger played the Joker in the The Dark Knight.

Ledger died in January 2008 only months after completing the film, investigating authorities finding he had taken an accidental overdose of prescription medicines.

Jesus. When I was in China in August I remember trying to find this movie playing in a cinema. Seems it still hasn't had a release and won't get one either. Would suck to be a Chinese moviegoer.

Never thought I'd see a sentence like that in my life.

EDDIE Murphy is reportedly set to play The Riddler in the next Batman movie, ending speculation Johnny Depp was in line for the role.

UK's The Sun reports the actor and comedian has been signed on by Christopher Nolan, with the film rumoured to be scheduled for a 2010 release.

Murphy would reprise the role played by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever.

Nolan had been tight-lipped about the future of the Batman films after the death of The Dark Knight star, Health Ledger.

A film insider told The Sun “Chris wasn’t sure if he wanted to do another movie but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion.

“Eddie’s a fantastic addition. Everyone’s excited to see what he does as the Riddler.”

Shia LeBeouf is reportedly said to have signed up to play Robin, while Christian Bale will return as Bruce Wayne as will Michael Caine in the role of Bruce's assistant Alfred.

Rumours have suggested Rachel Weisz is in line for the Catwoman role.
