Is my favourite movie of the year. If you have any questions re: plot etc then post them and I'll attempt to answer. Anyway I loved this film.

Actually, I'd say he WAS a cop. The tv news described him as a cop, and I think telling Sullivan the wrong address was merely a test. The fact that he hadn't actually ratted out Costigan when he had ample opportunity proves it. Costigan just panicked and went for his gun, but if he really wanted to tell Costello and the crew he had plenty of time beforehand.

I don't think it was a test...I think the address thing was an accident.

But that confirmed to him that he was a cop and thats why he didnt blab.

Hmm maybe. I just thought that he might have had a suspicions about Costigan, so he tried to get himself some proof. He would never have known for sure otherwise, considering the secrecy of Queenan and Dignam.

I say cop. Had plenty of opportunity to rat him to the gang, all standing there armed and pissed. Instead, did the whole confrontation thing. Then dies.

But if he's a cop...What's the significance of the scene?

To me, it makes more sense to say that he wasn't a cop...He could have blown Costigan's cover...

And the reason they said he was a cop on TV is because Jack Nicholson and his men pegged him as the cop...The real police probably felt that, knowing that Nicholson still had a rat in the PD, if they claimed him as a cap, it would take pressure off Costigan to keep performing...

I don't know.

Hmm... it begs another viewing I think. My first impression was that he was a cop, but it's getting a little hazy now. And I guess if he was an entrenched rat in the ranks then why did the State Police grip on Costello only start to tighten when Costigan infiltrated them... hmm indeed. Maybe Costigan was the guy who does his job, and the dead cop was the other guy ;-)

Hmmm...Interesting...

It was a great film, though.

Infernal Affairs was brilliant, too. I highly recommend it.

Infernal Affairs is actually a trilogy..

I haven't got around to seeing The Departed yet, but does anyone know if he based it on all 3 movies..or the first Infernal Affairs only?

Infernal Affairs is better.

The Departed is just based on the first part. Besides the other two Infernal Affairs films are garbage.
