btw, probably a fair call on Grohl's song writing skills. But you can't fault the man's instrumental genius. I've lost count of how many bands he's helped out. He did some drum work for NIN on their new album, I sure know that.

Phil Collins, he played drums, guitar and I think a bit of keyboards. Probably not the best, but he's up there.

Geeze I'll take your word for it.

He makes me want to go deaf.

on gilmour

he is the perfect example of a class muscician

relying on the beauty of melody and well chosen notes and bending technique rather than trying to cram as many notes into a phrase as possible

a good musician is good for what he doesnt play as what he does play

 Well said.

Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) & Dave Grohl have to make this Top 5 list.

That's funny...

What? You're serious?

Dave Grohl IS a talented musician but he doesn't have the musical legacy to compete.

Reznor's style is too one-dimensional and doesn't have a broad appeal (did I mention I dislike his music).

A reason why I don't think EVH qualifies on that list.

I've gotta disagree on that one.

Eddie appealed to large audience of music lovers, you've gotta have that kind of appeal to have number 1 hits, plus Eddie was the guitarist on Michael Jacksons massive hit "Beat it"

Beatles songbook
Van Halen songbook

Which one has more musical and cultural significance? Dumb question, right?

EVH's virtuoso status can't be denied, but this is all about the whole package, isn't it?

But Beatles were one of a kind, no one can compare to them.

You're right, but there are plenty of other bands (with good musicians) who are/were widely popular and have a consistently good collection.

The Who
Led Zeppelin
etc

What about Bruce Springsteen - songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, pianist, percussionist. A legend for his 4 hour + concerts and has innumerable versions of his own songs.

Although I don't like Phil Collins, I have to agree that as a musician, he is brilliant. He plays every instrument on most of his solo albums (perhaps he's just a control freak).
