Sorry Mate, But Ozzie or Ando Didn't sign him for 200 K plus a Season. As matter of matter Fact people need to Know Morts signed for 500 K over three seasons including this one. Which is about 170 K which is Less then everybody Thinks. Morts Will Be a Gun at 5/8 Not Halfback.[/QUOTE]

???? really???

Kenny was a gun, daley was a gun, fitler was a gun, lockyer is a gun 5/8. mortz will never be a gun. He will b average at best. Even though he was wearing the 7 on his back he was playing 5/8 most of this year and he was horrendous. A good 5/8 needs to be able to pass well, run through the line, kick well and have vision. Mortz does none of these well or consistently

it sounds like mortimer has been shoved down ando's throat wether he likews it or not.

That's been my thoughts on the matter for some time.

I have nothing against the kid personally. Maybe he will go on to be "a star" but I just don't see it. He is tiny, scrawny and clumsy. When he is catching or passing or kicking, the ball looks like a watermelon in his hands. He generally takes 2 or 3 steps and then gets monstered by the defence. The outside backs never see the ball. The only way he makes any inroads is when he ducks under a high tackle.

Anderson is a smart guy. I find it difficult to believe keeping Mortimer in the team for so long was purely his doing.

Whatever he is being paid it is too much.

I would love for him to turn into a good 5/8, but I haven't seen anything in his game that suggests he will be anything more than an average 5/8 at his very best.

To me he fits into that same category as Robson, a good backup if the 1st choice gets injured, but should never be a 1st choice himself.

When Morts was 5/8 last Season he wasn't doing 40 Tackles a game. This Season he averaged about 40 a Game. Does lockyer do 40 Tackles a Game ?

Here are some stats, taken from nrlstats.com, comparing Mortimers 2009 and 2010 seasons.

.................................2009 .....2010
Matches ......................18 ........20
Tries ..........................10 ..........2
Line Breaks ..................12 .........3
Line Break Assists ..........2 ..........3
Try Assists ...................7 ...........6
Offloads ......................16 .........12
Tackle Breaks ...............61 .........22
Runs (ave) ..................6.9 ........7.1
Metres (ave) ..............57.9 .......41.2
Tackles (ave) .............19.2 .......23.2
Missed Tackles (ave) .....3.1 ........4
Total Runs ..................125 .......142
Kick Metres ................4042 ......2917
Errors .........................16 .........29
Penalties Conceded.........3 ..........7

The interesting thing for me are the playmaking stats, his line break and try assists are almost identical. However his running game has gone right off the boil. Check out the tackle breaks in relation to total runs, last year he was top of the class, this year he's down with Tim Smith.

FYI Jacob Loko on Friday night, 18 tackle breaks and 4 line breaks, this kid needs to play left centre from round 1 next year if we're fair dinkum.

Mortimers average tackles are higher this year, but it's not as dramatic as some people would have you believe, it's probably due more to the fact that we've spent most of the year defending, than the opposition targeting him more. Lets face it, someone of his size will always get targeted more than someone larger.

No matter which way you spin it, these stats are terrible. Most people rate Chris Sandow an ordinary player, but even he destroys Mortz in just about every category, including 10 line break assists and 14 try assists this year.

Over coaching IMO is the main reason why League has gotten "boring" and (for lack of better word) less skillful in the last 10 years.

The control of the ruck, the pin point set plays, its all too military like. No longer can a players instincts take over and run the game.

mortimer, while not the most talented playmaker running around will go alright when the team around him is playing well and he has a strong ballplayer next to him so that he can play to his strengths. he scored more tries and made more breaks last year because our side was creating more effective offloads and he was able to use his ability to back up.

if he were able to develop his ability to run at the line while drawing in defence and passing to a player hitting a hole he will be a very good player (even better if he learns to find space on long kicks). as he is now, he always passes early when he passes or he tries to break the line when he runs. a bit of variety in those aspects wont hurt his game.

The thing is, if we do not get a playmaking 7 next year, would you still have him at 6?

It's like Robin without Batman.

Secondly, our pack next year will have different dynamics. Only Hindy being the noted offloader. So will the backup of the forwards be as important?

i would leave him in the 6 for now yes but very valid questions you ask. it is hard to look forward to 2011 given what we are losing. i am hoping our side starts to incorporate the offload again for 2011. in 09 our backs were doing it too.

re: the extra playmaker i don't care where they play (7 or 13). my opinion is that this year mateo should have been given more of that responsibility earlier in the year but the season has been and gone. however, we do need someone to fill that void. would also be good if we found a bench player that could provide a creative spark like widders did for us once upon a time.

on a positive note from 2010 - i have been very happy with the early form of mitchell. hopefully he takes it up a level or more in 2011. people that talked him up as being a talented player are looking right at this stage.

40 eh? making up stats now to suit ur arguement??? Mortz does not make 40 tackles a game

He averaged 23 tackles a game which was only about 4 or so more than last year.

And so what if they were centres b4 they were 5/8s. They were still gun 5/8s and my point is that mortz will never come within a country mile of them, hence never being a gun 5/8 as u suggest

LOL at Morts being a f**king gun. He'd be a bloody water pistol based on his current skill set.

Personally, i've seen Fui and Hindy do more effective playmaking than the kid.
All i've seen Morts do all season is play like a small lock forward.

Sorry to all the Morts dick grabbers but he hasn't improved all year, so this 'trying hard' bullsh*t is washing off slower than a tattoo.

Everyone will go alright if the team is playing well, it's a matter of whether we can blow teams away or beat teams in the finals that 'being alright' is and will never be enough. Last year he was playing like a small extra forward so it was obvious he was going to bag a few tries and linebreaks, especially when Hayne was out there demolishing teams and giving them abit of puff.

As a playmaker he is horrendous, every 5/8, even manufactured ones should have a decent kicking game and a decent passing game. Every player should at least be taught the basics and foundations of a spiral pass, weighting your passes to a player, it's as Gus once said 'the bag of tricks', Morts doesn't have that and it appears he hasn't tried to attain any of them this season which dissapoints and frustrates me to no end.

can someone please tell me at what point in time we decided that players who try hard and have a good attitude deserve a spot in 1st grade. Im sick of hearing about how much effort he puts in. Who cares about effort if they dont produce results

This is true.

At least Mortimer has the right attitude and can possibly improve, but at the moment hes not good enough.

Agreed, I'm sick of hearing it too.
I'm sure most of us on this forum would try hard and give 100% if we got picked in the team, I guess it doesn't matter how crap we are, just as long as we try hard.

It's been the same with Cayless as well, I like him, but seriously, he has been a very average prop for most of his career. He always gives 100% is usually the first defense for him.

Lets face it, when the 'he tries hard' type excuses start it means they aren't good enough. If they were good enough then people wouldn't have to resort to those comments.

People say Loyalty is dead in RL, but sometimes we can be too loyal.
