Manly Warringah Sea Eagles will enter a team in the 2023 NSWRL Tarsha Gale Cup, the Under 19 female junior representative competition, for the first time in the Club’s history.

Entry into the NSWRL competition will be the first step in the creation of a complete Sea Eagles female pathway with the intention to apply for a NRLW licence for the 2025 season.

That's great news from Manly. I had been told they were just not interested in the woman's game, which I thought was an absolute shame as there were so many talented young athletes there. Not to mention clubs like Forestville had been running female teams for years.

I don't think it will be long before they have a very competitive TG team

She’s earned the nickname ‘Smiley’ at St George Illawarra this season because all she does is just that but when Tara McGrath-West gets on the field, she leaves no stone unturned.

Dragons coach Jamie Soward has struck gold with McGrath-West in his second campaign in charge of the Red V with the former Raiders Tarsha Gale Cup product impressing in five matches this year.

Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues are playing a key role in developing the next generation of female stars, taking up coaching positions with teams across the state participating in the Lisa Fiaola Cup gala day at Tuggerah’s Central Coast Regional Sporting Complex on Tuesday 27 September.

Corban Baxter (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks), Keeley Browne and Keeley Davis (Illawarra Steelers) are among those who have been sharing their knowledge and skills with their respective club Under 17s pathway teams in preparation for the annual event.

After watching the post game celebrations of the QRL GF and the AFL a thought struck me.

The emergence of women's competition in all the footy codes provides opportunity for on field celebrations of a winning team that womens sport has not had before on a national scale.

Cricket is the only other outdoor sport I can think of where this on field opportunity exists. Field hockey is popular with females but doesn't have the national profile.

So I would love to see our NRL administration ..including the events people ...really make a spectacle of the post game presentations.

This could inspire female youth to want to be in the same situations as the players they are seeing being celebrated in front of a national audience.

The talent was as real as some of the hits and tries scored in the first ever Sea Eagles Tarsha Gale Cup squad invitational trial.

Held at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen on Wednesday night, girls from the Northern Beaches, Sydney’s west, Central Coast, the Hunter region and even Far North Queensland showcased their skills.

It was the fly in, fly out mission costing well over $1000 that typifies the passion Grace McFillin clearly has for rugby league.

The 18-year-old lock travelled over 3000 kilometres by air from her home in Townsville to Sydney on Wednesday to try her luck in the first ever Sea Eagles Tarsha Gale Cup squad invitational trial.

With 10 teams next season in the NRLW, I'd love to know what the finals series structure will be. Do they retain the top 4? Or run with a top 5 or 6?

As the Australian Schoolboys team travelled to Fiji last week on their 50th celebration tour, 17 girls were also making history of their own, writing a new chapter for women’s rugby league.

While the team were victorious, posting a 48-0 win, the tour was about more than just the game and the result, with Spero saying the entire camp would help develop the girls into the future, especially with many of them aspiring to reach further representative honours.

After the return of the New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) National Secondary Schools Tournament (NSST) and the inaugural NZRL National Girls Youth Tournament, New Zealand Rugby League is proud to announce the first-ever 16’s and 18’s Girls representative fixtures. The two-week-long tournaments displayed the growth in the female game, and these fixtures will be another step in the pathway to becoming the next generation of Kiwi Fern talent.

The 16’s age group will see an Auckland Invitational team take on Aotearoa Whaanui, with the match-up displaying the best young talent from across the motu, whilst in the 18’s, The girls will play out the Clubs vs Schools fixture that began in 2020.

Abdo was saying with 10 teams it will be an 11 week comp so i am figuring it will be top 4.

Surely not and they make it a top 5 and 4 week final series

Even if top 6 it can be 4 weeks too

teams 1 and 2 the week off first week of finals

3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 - 2 losers eliminated

2nd week

1 vs 2 - winner to GF and loser to week 4 Prelim Final

2 winners of 3 v 6 and 4 vs 5 winner to week 3 prelim final and loser eliminated

3rd week - prelim final

4th week - GF

So 13 week comp plus byes for SOO as they will have 2 games in 2023.

Be looking at late April pre-season start which is only 6 or so months away.

Not sure how the expanded NRLW Comp affects the state based Women's premiership comp - do they make these a reserve grade comp like NSW Cup and the QLD Cup comps.

No CBA yet for either the NRL and NRLW - Worse for NRLW Clubs and NRLW players in not knowing what the cap is and when the NRLW comp will start , how long it will go for and the squad numbers as all the players are off contract.

So clubs can't sign players and players can't sign contracts to know where they will be playing which is the case every season.

All the players are very much part time and have jobs and what not outside of footy so this also needs to be factored in for who they can sign for.

Not all employers are supportive of employees sporting ambitions one has to say

Thats good the see.

It maybe a bit ambitious for Manly to field a NRLW team for say 2026 if they are applying for licence in 2025 when only just starting their female Rugby League program ?

I figure Souths/Bulldogs/Penrith are more advanced with their female Rugby League programs when the next EOI's for admission to the NRLW comp are called for by the NRL.

The Warriors will more than likely be re-admitted since the travel restriction etc are no longer in place

Not sure how the Storm/ Dolphins are going with their Female Rugby League programs.

One figures though that eventually it will be a 17 team comp and 18 when a 18th team is added to the NRL

Will be interesting to see how Manly goes. Slot of talent there but many don't want to play while the Fulton's are involved.
Both south's and bulldogs need massive adjustments and cleanouts (not players) before they will advance

there is also the investment in the womens game. Cricket Australia is the best example of investing in the womens game paying dividends. I believe the National Contract is just shy of 200k for the girls and with strong marketing and the increased growth of the WBBL, interest is at an all time high and with more girls in cricket, that makes it more popular as a whole as cricket is a sport throughout history that has struggled with the womens demographic. Footy is behind on the wages front but the fact they are now into their 5th season of a semi professional national comp with games now having paid tickets with teams selling out means Footy wont be falling behind with womens fans. Compare this to NRL once again where there complete lack of attention for the womens game with still only having 4 teams. The minimum wage is only 8k for an NRLW player whereas AFLW is double that and cricket being well ahead of both. This means that females in established Rugby Leagues areas of NSW and QLd will be more likely to have an interest in footy and cricket at a young age, once again, leaving Rugby behind.
That made no sense
