There have been players selected for junior mens origin that went on to play for NZ. I wonder whether those players are eligible for both NZ and Australia

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldog's Alexis Tauaneai was yesterday awarded the NSWRL Tarsha Gale Cup Player of the Year at Leichhardt Oval, receiving the honours during the 2023 NSWRL Grand Final Day.

The prestigious award caps off a remarkable season for the versatile front-rower who made a move to Belmore from across the Tasman in the off-season.

Not sure what the eligibility rules are for the Women's game?

This week's Harvey Norman Women's National Championships will offer New Zealand the rare chance to test their elite teenage talent against some of Australia's best players.

New Zealand will enter a team in the tournament – a U19 selection dubbed Ahi Ka Aotearoa – for the first time this year.

With no age-grade national sides for the women currently, or opportunities to develop players through pathways like the Women's State of Origin U19s, NZRL GM of high performance Motu Tony said the National Championships will provide a valuable opportunity for emerging Kiwi Ferns.

The article fails to mention that six women eligible for New Zealand will be taking part for NSW City & QLD Rubys.

Anyone else have live stream issues? NSW City too strong for QLD 'Country' side that clearly didn't have enough time to gel with nine changes.

Just dipped in and out of the National Championships coverage. Like last year, the refereeing is risibly dire. All the usual nit-picking imaginary nonsense. They really are doing their utmost to ruin every game. Becomes unwatchable at times, unless you enjoy being driven to despair.

The South Australia team were penalized for "holding the ball in the scrum". All that happened was the ball hit the lock forward's leg. She didn't lift her foot for the ball to go clean through. Maybe the solution is to not put the ball in the scrum at all. Just roll it to the side, well away from anyone in the scrum.

Sienna Lofipo hopes she is on the path to future State of Origin glory after the teenage whiz was named as the 19th player in the Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons Game II squad.

The 18-year-old playmaker has had a breakout season in 2023, first helping steer the Wynnum Manly Seagulls to the BMD Premiership grand final before picking up a Gold Coast Titans NRLW contract and earning selection in the Queensland Under 19 women’s 24-player squad.

Niall Williams-Guthrie and Cheyelle Robins-Reti are other cross code stars to have made an immediate impact this season, as the number of players eligible for the Kiwi Ferns in the NRLW has risen to 58.

I only count 40. Does anyone know if the NZRL has a current list of eligible players?

The NRL should bring in the draft for the women's game....

Have a second division or under 20s run by non club affiliated sides and then have those players go into a draft.

Instead of having the strong clubs with the extra pull for media commitments just stacking their sides...

Can you imagine NRL players agreeing to a draft - ditto NRLW players - been there done that - restraint of trade

Doesn't the NRLW have a deaft in place already
No draft in NRLW - They had a salary cap points systems but not sure if this is still in use under the current CBA

When in use Teams could sign 22 players - minimum points were 120 and maximum 160
  • 10 points if they played for the Jillaroos or Kiwi Ferns;
  • 8 points if they played State of Origin for NSW or Queensland;
  • 4 points if they represented the PM’s XIII against the PNG Orchids in Port Morseby, and;
  • 3 points if they played at the National Championships.
NRLW Salary Cap
  • 2023 - $900,000 ($30,000 minimum wage per player)
  • 2024 - $1,020,000 ($34,000 minimum wage per player)
  • 2025 - $1,254,000 ($41,800 minimum wage per player)
  • 2026 - $1,386,000 ($46,200 minimum wage per player)
  • 2027 - $1,518,000 ($50,600 minimum wage per player)
