I should start with Fitzhenry because he's a player who Ive been doubting all year. Tonight I thought he was excellent, especially out of dummy-half. I know we've tried him at Hooker before but maybe its worth another go. His ball distribution was however fairly average and I thought that this had a stifling effect on the Tigers attack. Maybe its harsh to blame him entirely for some of those loopy passes they were throwing. Galea was guilty of this on a number of occasions.
Prince and Hodgson, our two classy players combined brilliantly for that second try. It gave me so much hope that we might start putting on some decent tries especially now that Hodgson is trailing the ball runner and hitting the gap.
In the first half Gibbs was the only forward who was really muscling up to his big Penrith counterparts. I felt that Skandalis got totally outplayed by Clinton and the Tiges were generally getting bettled coming off their own line. But in the second half it was a completely different story. Skando was running a bit wider and hitting it up really strongly as was Lanfranchi. I liked how both Bronson and Boof were also getting their arms free for offloads-it adds more continuity to our play.
And now I come to our centres...well the +ves first Wilson scored a try and Elford saved two through intercepts. However Elford's defence in the first half was terrible and Wilson looked equally bad in attack. How good would it be to have an elusive player in the centres along with the bigger, more solid player (Elf or Wilson) At the moment we have two centres who are exactly alike and two second-rowers who are interchangable. Can we please get some varriation in there?
Finally it was good to see Duff have such a solid debut. His defence was excellent, he scored a try and generally he looks extremely agile ala Hodgson.

On Fitzy STIFLING the attack... Man, if others followed him and ran on rather than standing flat footed this would have been a different story.. Sorry but I think Fitzy was outstanding and if others had been switch on and been awake to give him options rather than standing off expecting someone else to make it happen the result could have been different...

I thought Fitzy had a good game too, and the support let him down a fair bit.

Prince was brilliant IMO.

How good does it feel to know you have a proper halfback - sh!t its been a long time. And his kicking game was great again.

Skandalis also had another great game, whilst Fitzhenry, although he isnt a five-eighth, played well out of dummy half.

And I have to mentiont this - I thought Galea played very well tonight. Alot of people want him out of the team but he is slowly getting his fitness back and will be an important player for us. His defence was great too.

A couple of other things as well:

Did Moodie even touch the ball?
Hodgson needs to back up Prince more often
Sattler had an average game
O'Neill looks a weak link (sorry, but I had to say it)
WE NEED A GOCLKICKER!!

Sattler had an average game? By his standard his average game is pretty good... What do you base that on mate?
ONeal was out best ball playing backrower! What do you base that on? He created more second phase than the rest of team put together...

I think Galea needs to stop the Owen Craigie Diet and perhaps try the Atkins diet!!
Harsh very harsh considering his perfomance tonight and how long he's been back from injury... Take a hard look....

Im only kidding I actually thought that the little extra bulk suited him,and that he was destructive at times up the middle. ;-)

Galea for 5/8th?
I thought the poorest of our backrowers tonight was Nick Graham, but Im not going to write him off on one average performance.

Sattler just didnt look as sharp as he usually does IMO. Not a bad game but an average one.

And O'Neill didnt do much wrong (apart from spill that ball with the line wide open) but he looked a little lacklustre to me. He needs to run straight once in a while.

To be honest I think he has played more than just 1 average performance, but that is to be expected when you have been playing in England where you can be 45,a smoker,an alcoholic and look like Owen Craigie and be considered the fittest member of your team and the fastest over 20 meteres.

maybe he based it on the fact that he missed 6 tackles(again)dropped it twice and was reported and panthers score on the next set.plus he made a pathetic 67m from 13 hitups

Galea 5/8 is not the answer he's not a play maker.. Sit tight man, Fitzy did they job and when Benji's back the shift is on (can't wait to Fitzy running off him in the centres those two are thick as thieves at training and I believe the making of a great combo- we saw glimpes of it at the 7's). Fitzy is our best option for now and let be honest he isn't stictly playing a 5/8 role, he's an on field utility, tonight he roamed from centre, to dummy half to first reciever, half back and 2nd reciever.. He will not be our long term five eight but for mine he's out best option by far at the moment particularly with sats and galea interchanging with him when the time is right (did yo notice in our last set of six when we needed direction sats slotted in there).... Benji was playing 5/8 in the cowboys game (and is dirty as hell he'd finally been given his chance then got injured) he will be the lynch pin when we make our late run... And we will make a late run, no club has been hit by injuries like we have and most of them long termers (penrith had no one one on the injured list coming into tonights game - how lucky have they been) we just need to keep in striking distance of the 8 and we'll come home with a wet sail with all the boys coming back for the final assault fo the last ten rounds... Lets rember that Sheens said firstly "we will need a good run with injuries to be a force" that hasn't happend (however I think we've hung in pretty well )and he also said "you wouldn't see the best of us till at least round 12"... The signs are good that even with the injuries against us that we are on target to have it together by 12. Make a fair assessment of the season so far:
Cronulla Win Sloppy game but we stood up in the end and deserved the win.
Souths Loss in Golden Point (controversy) had to deal with Mad Dog in poss the best game he has ever played, scored more trys, they had a hell of a lot to play for a loss would have seen their coach probably shown the door. And as shown in their other matches pre mad dogs exit they were a much improved side.
Broncos very unlucky we were the better side for 70% of that match controversy again and very solid performance.
Cowboys we Won they were terrible and it was a very scrappy affair but in the past particularly up there we would have lost (lost our 5/8 very early) broke the hoodoo not matter what a better result than previous years.
Saints loss, a couple of close decisions early and this could have been a different result the saints are a confidence team and if we had put those first couple of tries on them as we should have they would have fallen apart, we didn't and and then dropped our shoulders and put hands on hips and felt the reprecusssions. We'll learn more from this match then any other so far.
Eagles game, we didn't turn up to play but the crowd got us there on time and in the past we would have been smashed, instead we ended up winning and convincingly in the end.
Pennys tonight, we showed we can match it, ingore the crap that they were off their game, we put them off it, defence and heart was outstanding.
Not bad for a totally rebuilt team that has been ravaged by injury imho... We'll make the 8 have faith and soon those decisions that have been going the other way with be ours... Onwards and upwards...

sorry but of his missed tackles I only saw him once fully stood up, he did get things rolling when we looked flat imho. Not his game but I don't think he was that bad... And the hit wasn't that bad or late it looked much worse on the slow mo imho, really when it happend before it was called up ( remember we had the ball for 2 tackles after before clark stopped it did you really think it was that bad? I would have been very hard to pull out of.. And Gower laughed after the match about his hollywood... Not sats best but i wouldn't be pointing the finger at him.

sounds about right rif

during these next few weeks i just want us to win our 2 home games and us jag an away win.just wish tonight was the away win.

injuries will be the key,and does anyone know if we actually came out of the game injury free.
that will be another first for us. :D

the panthers game was another step towards our teams confidence,i said after last weeks win that the boys would now have the confidence to come back when they are 12 points down with 15 to go,and to see them do it again is another big step, especially against the premiers.

but losing because of goalkicking sure does suck.

and it sure was good to see them put in a good performance for their sponsor and their fans in a big game.

well done tigers, hopefully we can keep on taking steps forward.
