They already sold a big chunk to private equity

Plus it’s total value is like 300 to 500 million dollars(just the club game)

And the 10 remaining clubs, 7 are technically insolvent with total losses of 30 to 40 million pounds pa

Edit it was 27 percent for around 200 to 275 million pounds

So the whole comp is valued at around 1 billion pounds sterling

The English club game is a basketcase
Interesting

Maybe just buy the clubs ie a SL war style raid

There aren’t any big clubs over there anyway

Most are from small towns like rugby league

The big money is six nations and other test matches

Take away internationals and they are on par with super league

Soccer rules everything

Cvc already owns 27 percent of all the clubs and they are making good money on it as it is. Other club owners are happy to cover losses as long as they have money

Some have tried to have league sides eg Quins had broncos at their ground rebrand as Quins

Rugby of either code is just tiny in England

Bristol 500k

Leicester 375k

newcastle 310k

northampton 250k

and then theres harlequins and saracens based in London.

I do really wonder is a combined England/Aus comp could work….

For the UK teams, the prestige of regularly hosting NRL teams would be enormous for local interest.

For Aus, having UK teams i the same comp make those games relevant to Aussie fans so i think the games on tv would get a great audience (sitting in the 300k mark for paytv). So it would just be more content to sell.

the obvious problems are logistics of travel and timezones. These might honestly be too much and split the comp in half (it would be sh*t if a third of your clubs away games are played after midnight…
You'd probably do three conferences of 10 (one of them a European conference) H&A then a finals series where top three from each Southern Hemisphere conference join the top 2 from the European conference for a combined finals series

Can see them cutting two rounds tops

Four is way too much and they won’t hit 20 teams till 2030 at the earliest

Expanded internationals will be good though

I think they will end up doing a rep period around origin with no nrl games. That’s something they should’ve done decades ago

Women’s origin x 3
Men’s origin x 3
Samoa v Tonga x 3
Nz v England (if super league releases their players) x 3

Each game on a different night of the week over 3 weeks so content is there to cover no nrl

We need to move to a 3 week window during Origin as follows:
Origin- 3 game series, Men and women.
Samoa vs Tonga 3 game series.
Fiji vs PNG 3 game series.
New Zealand vs England 3 game series
France, Ireland, Wales and Scotland, 3 week comp.

Once the NRL has SL , we can pause both comps for the rep period.

Friday 7.30: Samoa v Tonga
Saturday 530: Origin (women) 7.30 men's
Sunday 4pm : Fiji vs PNG

Northern hemisphere:

Friday:730 Wales vs Scotland
Saturday: 7.30 NZ vs England
Sunday 4pm: France vs Ireland

During this period players with heritage should be released and paid to represent or run training programs for developing Countries, $10k for 3 weeks with those regardless of whether they are playing or not: USA , Jamaica, Canada ( a round robin comp maybe)Italy, Greece , Lebanon ect.

That's it in a nutshell.

Management/oversight of the Australian NRL AND Superleague (maybe rebranded to NRL Europe) means club calendars can be aligned & universally accepted rep windows can happen.

We're looking at the potential for what FIFA has in their game.
What's interesting is between Union and League, Union has always been ahead in terms of organisation but it's really starting to swing, especially if the NRL buys Super League.
Rugby league can be run domestically and globally under one streamlined organisation within the next decade.
Union will still be juggling comps , internationals , overpaying to win talent from itself and infighting.

To be fair, a vital step was taken by the English establishment when they moved their season to the northern summer during the Superleague war, to align with ours.

Rugby union still struggles to reconcile two largely incompatable calendars - and if we can refine our global season, they'll be under even more pressure to fit all those pieces together in some coherent way.

And while they're under all independent run countries and comps it will remain difficult
