Doesn't look too bad, I'll be seeing it.

Looks like Gandalf chops up some box too, good for him.

Can't wait. Don't know what some people are on about it looks great to me.

The Hobbit book was so much easier to read than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so the movie should be easier to get through too.

The Hobbit was written as a children's book that's why. He wrote LoTR because The Hobbit was so popular iirc.

I still haven't read LoTR but have read The Hobbit. Bring it!

LoTR is hands down the greatest book I've ever read and I've read a lot of books. I make it a rule to read it once a year, which means I've gone through it 10 times and not once did I get bored reading it.

I'm thankful that I read the Ride of the Rohirrim in ROTK before I saw it in the cinema. I'm not afraid to say I had tears in my eyes when Theoden bellowed out "a sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises!" Jackson really gave that scene justice.

/end emotional nerd rant.

Never understood the fascination with LoTR/The Hobbit. I tried to read Fellowship of the Ring and only made it to the end of Book I. That Tom Bombadil fella shit me to tears.

To each his or her own, I guess.

Book 1 is probably the hardest one to get through because the situation is rather bleak for the hobbits and the fellowship. The odds are stacked against them but things get a whole lot better in book 2 when Rohan and the Ents enter the picture. Book 3 is just a massive war saga when everything reaches a climax.

Each novel is split into two parts, isn't it? My recollection was that Fellowship had Books I & II. So in that respect I got halfway through Fellowship before calling it quits, then ended up just watching the movies and left it at that.

Actually yeah you're right, it's been about 8 months since I last read LOTR in its entirety. There are two books in each volume. TT and ROTK each have 2 books as well, concentrating on Frodo/Sam and then the wars the rest of the fellowship get involved in. What I meant to say was that things really pick up from Two Towers onwards.

I remember the first time I read Fellowship. I felt depleted after that book because so many bad things happened to the hobbits and then the fellowship. I was like "when are they going to catch a break?"

The Two Towers gives the reader their first glimpse of hope when Gandalf returns as the White. Tolkien subtly hints in parts that Saruman may not be as strong as he makes himself out to be and he has provoked powers that he clearly has forgotten about (the Ents).

One day I'll read both The Hobbit & Lord Of The Rings - we always had them in the family book collection, but for some reason I just never got around to reading them.
Even when the LOTR movies came out and I decided to get a boxset of all four books for myself, still haven't got around to reading them! Oh well.
Having said that we did have a book based off the animated LOTR movie by Ralph Bakshi, which I flicked through about a million times in my youth, for the pictures though of course.

It's a beautiful day in Wellington today (by Wellington standards of course, shut up Australia!!!), I'm knocking off work a bit earlier to go check out the festivities with the red carpet for the Hobbit premiere in town (did the same for the ROTK premiere way back when which was a massive event as well). Good times!

Tom Bombadil is the only thing that shits me about the LOTR books. It was completely against the tone of what was happening. Bit of a "What the...." moment.
