The 'how to improve the F7s' thread

Interesting read folks.... a few comments if I may.

I can see where Crusher is coming from... perhaps something akin to the tropfest where you would have that particular word or phrase of the game that writers in any way could include in their article. I think that keeps the element of fun plus allow a degree of equity in the scoring if for example some bonus points was given to the best use of the 'word' or 'phrase'.

I know I get stuck for ideas, I'm not a tachnical expert on footy so I sometimes think I push the line on how mauch rugby league content I have in my articles...something I think some refs don;t seem to notice... for example a recent article which was a great english essay on the history of Feminism with perhaps the last paragraph tying it in to relate it to RL. Which is fine but how do you then compare and mark accordingly when compared to a full on league content article?

Like Mortica, over the last couple of seasons I have become a little more used to understand what particular refs like and what they tend to look out for. I write accordingly. The audience...or should I say Audient then becomes the referee rather than the readers out there. Though, with a lack of any real statistics I can;t back it up.... BUT! just judging by the number of hits a thread gets and knowing that probably 5 out 60 hits are mine doesn;t really say much about the readership...BUT! again... I write cause it's fun and this comp allows that room for fun (having said that I rarely read other peoples articles, reserving that to players of the round)... of course if that was REALLY the case I wouldn;t be keeping to much notice of the Backpacker PotY scores.

For me though I would like more feedback from either the refs when the scores are posted...especially in their comments. With so many close games I would like to be at least a little more satisfied that my article was understood. Structured articles are happening more frequently lately and ref are picking up on this and I want to be sure that either the premise or structure of my articles are understood.... more comments from the refs would be awesome. Contructive critisism I would appreciate too.

One of things that annoys me is that it clearly states that in the opening post that only game posts are allowed but I'm finding it annoying that some players are posting comments before the refs have posted the score... I know this is just me but I would like to see this area cleaned up more.... Commenst after the ref has posted is fine...and perhaps only captains before the scores.

I disagree with this. Nothing wrong with a bit of sportsmanship.

The problem is resources. We don't have that many refs running around unfortunately and could create problems.

Hear, hear .

I'm done and dusted as a Ref, with no games to mark unless Mystique does a hammy, and I won't be reffing the GF.

I'll be a part-time player next year with the 'Bags.

But - as a ref I wouldn't have sat down on potentially 2 or 3 stories a fortnight and discussed it with another ref if we'd had a five point (+) difference. Quite possible to have that difference as well.

IMO the ref's do it for the love of the game and to advance the F7s - kind of an enjoyable community service. Everyone scores to an honest and objective approach with various overlays and degrees of personal bias/influence. I used to hate posts about f7s and game reports but would give each one a fair go in the scoring.

Two refs a match will cheapen the scoring and system as we don't have enough refs and they will do it quick to get it done. As well it would mean ref's scoring more than one match and thus the load will be too great for some. It's a downward spiral - currently the system works OK.

If the ref's want to instigate a scoring system, then thats fine, just bear in mind that marks for originality (set amount limits) are pretty hard to hand out when people are dishing up boring crap week after week. As well the ref's need to know what grammar is and be sure when Mr Punctuation should and shouldn't visit.

Yeah, I kinda miss the 'Bags culture - the stogies in the hot-tub, the white bread tuna sandwiches with the crusts cut off, the smell of damp in the basement of the King George V grandstand change-rooms, the towel-flicking nudie romps in the corridors between the ref's and the first aid rooms .....

Still, I always tried to get rid of the stalks and seeds early to keep a solid weight, so I 'spose I've been a bit of stalker in my time - reminds me of the time I went to visit my girlfriend and had to break in ....

8-[ can i come out now?

can we look at changing the finals format? or have less number of teams making the finals? they just seem very long winded this year for some reason.

lol.... you sound keen to get on the field Mort.

I think its because last year the F7s grand final coincided with the NRL grand final. The F7s grand final kicked off on NRL grand final night.

The makeup of the draw this year sees the F7s grand final running a little later than the NRL grand final - kicking off a week later. Therefore creating that feeling that the F7s premiership too should be decided by now?

That's my theory anyway.

In 2007, we should try and line both grand finals up in the same way as we did in 2005.

Alternatively (and maybe along the lines of what you mean) the top five seems a tad generous for a 10 team comp, and perhaps we should consider a top four semis. The old Sydney comp never had a top five for 10 teams and even had top four for a while when there were 12 teams.

keen to get on the field? you mean we're not done yet

hides bottle of vodka, puts cheesecake back in fridge and dusts off treadmill :?

yeah, four teams (did we make the four, first? ;-) ). grandfinal fulltime wed after nrl grand final. means people will have to get their sh*t together early or write after grand final travels though.
