it is better to keep one's mouth shut and be thought of as stupid, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

unfortunately, the sharkies gang are impatient fools and couldnt help themselves.

AAAP reports

At a gala evening last night in the ‘Cut Em Up’ memorial room of the Cronulla Sutherland Leagues Club, the Cronulla Sharks officially named their ‘Team Of The Century’ to an expectant horde of loyal supporters.

Steve Rogers, current Sharks CEO was given the honour of reading out the team.

Prior to this grand occasion, Rogers was asked whether it was a bit rich calling it the ‘Team of the Century’ when Cronulla have only been present in the top flight since 1967. He replied “Well 38 straight years of losing bloody well seems like 100 to me”.

He was also asked to nominate the two years he thought he was in with his best chance of winning the competition. Whilst most in the crowd were expecting 1973 and 1978 to be nominated, Rogers went for 1983 and 1984, stating that “at least those teams thought they had a chance of winning it”.

Whilst disappointed that he hadn’t been chosen in the team himself, Rogers was philosophical stating “If any team embodies the real spirit of Cronulla, it’s this team”.

Those in the crowd revelled in the party atmosphere of the occasion, with many donning fancy dress attire. Former Kiwi International Dane Sorensen came as an ice bucket, testament to the amount of times he spent in one, ex President Peter Gow came dressed as a pair of scissors, while many in the crowd dressed as ex St.George International Barry Beath; which had the resultant effect of Gow spending the evening running away from every second person. He was spotted asleep under one of the back tables by 9pm.

Unfortunately he was asleep when announced as the ‘Cronulla President Of The Century’ award recipient.

Other awards included:

Coach Of The Century: Chris Anderson

Sponsor Of The century: Cleanaway

Ground Name Of The Century: Ronson Field

Most Loyalty Shown To A Player Award: Preston Campbell

Best Strip: The sky blue shorts and jersey ensemble, early 80’s.

The full Cronulla Sutherland Sharks, ‘Team Of The Century’ is:

Fullback: Ben Sammut

Wing: Eion Crossan

Centre: John Jarvie

Centre: Lindsay Bowne

Wing: Glenn Coleman

Five-Eighth: Scott Gustard

Halfback: Brett Kimmorley - c

Lock: Paul Melross

Second Row: Brad Perry

Second Row: Fred Pagano

Prop: Errol Hillier

Hooker: Andrew Neave

Prop: Rex Williams

Reserves:

Sean (Seen) Watson

Gary Stares

Greg Carberry

Luke Massey

Halfback and captain Brett Kimmorley was ecstatic. “To be captain of that team is a dream come true. And just to be mentioned in the same breathe as some of those former greats, well it’s a testament to what I’ve put in to Cronulla over these past few years. I’m over the moon”.

The great night ended on a sour note however with two unidentified men in white jackets whisking away the President of the Century. His current whereabouts are unknown.

I didn't know the losing culture in Cronulla was this bad

Well is it? Is it so bad to of played in 38 comps and not won one? What is the magic number of comps played in without winning that draws your derision?

But St George have participated in 84 comps and won 15. That's 69 losing years.

We have a long way to go before we reach that level of mediocrity.

84 or 78, CJS??

In any case, if winning 15 titles is mediocrity - I'll take it any day...

best you get yourself accustomed to mediocrity given your clubs penchant for disappointment and underachievment in the last generation.

can't deny we wouldn't like even 1 of those 15. obviously. quite an amazing title record during your golden era before you lost the shire, but not very much since then for the 'grandest club in the league' and you know it.

the faded glories routine ain't fooling anybody except yourselves.

Must be easy for you guys. We expect results. You have had a taste for success to care about winning
