To quote Trey Parker, you missed the point "more than Michael Bay missed the mark when he made Pearl Harbor."
I'm keen to understand what hardship you endure replacing one of the most mediocre NRL players of all time with a future Immortal

Again - we've been a final 4 side 5 years in a row and have already gone through two rounds of 'loss of players due to success'.

In the 4 years since we made our first of those prelims we've lost the following side:

1. Greg Inglis
2. Corey Allan
3. Dane Gagai
4. Adam Doueihi
5. Jaxson Paulo
6. Benji Marshall
7. Adam Reynolds
8. George Burgess
9. Kodi Nikorima
10. Mark Nicholls
11. John Sutton
12. Angus Crichton
13. Sam Burgess

14. Jaydn Su'A
15. Bayley Sironen
16. Ethan Lowe
17. Hymel Hunt

We've replaced them with 2 big name imports (Mitchell and Arrow) and then the rest has been internal development and lower grade purchases.

Souths are run far too well to implode like the lesser clubs.

As for the Panthers? Their junior setup/production line will ensure success for years to come.

The top 5 paid players are

Latrell inconsistent
Cody - 33
Cook - 32
Now added Wighton to a 4 year deal over 30.

It is a huge risk for a club yet to get over that hump.

Especially if Graham goes as a result

Question - are Souths really that stacked to warrant such fuss?

Look at the backs in Souths' current Top 30.

Fullbacks:
Latrell Mitchell - Genuine import on top dollar
Blake Taaffe - signed as Flegg player, last re-signed before first grade debut
Terrell Kalo Kalo - current Flegg player

Outside backs:
Alex Johnston - initially wasn't wanted by the club and had to take a lower deal to re-sign with us
Isaiah Tass - signed from reserve grade for minimal dollars
Campbell Graham - local junior who last re-signed 3 years ago and wouldn't have cost much at the time. Will need a significant upgrade in his next contract
Izaac Tu’itupou Thompson - signed from nowhere having not played league in 5 years for probably minimum wage
Taane Milne - journeyman signed from the Warriors lower grades
Josiah Karapani - current Flegg player
Leon Te Hau - current Flegg player

Halves:
Cody Walker - signed as a reserve grader, latest contract would be on top dollar
Lachlan Ilias - signed from the Tigers as a Flegg player, re-signed last year, wouldn't be on big dollars
Dean Hawkins - local junior, current reserve grader

Currently Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker would be the only ones on big money. Alex Johnston and Campbell Graham on mid-sized deals, with Campbell Graham to be on big money on his next contract.

Yes we all know Cook plays for a bacon and egg roll voucher at Coogee Beach surf life savers canteen. Sometimes they even throw in a milkshake after he's done his morning beach sprint routine. And Murray plays for love, not money.

I do love these posts where a supporter (of any club) lays out the "under" value of their players to justify their sides hijinx. Just because you bring a 16 year old through your club doesn't mean you can continue to pay them minimum wage. Nobody lives in that reality, surely?

Once they hit NRL and a bit of form their player manager is knocking on the office door of the CEO and demanding a payrise. No club turns around and tells them to "**** off, look at the contract you signed". They stump up the cash or they have a bloke who doesn't put in and/or whinges to his team-mates and becomes a toxic influence in the squad.

Murray and Cook would both be on big coin, no doubt. My post was illustrating how little we have spent on backs, comparably.

You don't say. That's why I said Graham will require a significant upgrade in his next contract. We'll also likely lose guys the ilk of Tass, Milne, Thompson, Taaffe, etc.

My point, which some are struggling with, is that overall our backs are nowhere near stacked as people might think. Hell, most smart judges have pointed out it's been an achilles heel of ours these past 5 years and stopped us winning a premiership.

It's why we've signed Wighton.

Anyway, I'll try not to post any more on the matter. This is for 2024 and we have a comp to win in 2023.

Cook is signed up on 900k/year until 2025
Mitchell signed up on 900k/year until 2027
Murray is signed up on on 850k/year until 2025
Walker just resigned this year on 900k/ year until 2025
and now Wighton on 800k / year for four years

Some of those contracts would have gone up 25% inline with the salary cap increase this year
That means those 5 players are taking up just under $5M of the $12.1M cap
That means only about 285k/year for the remaining 25 plays in the squad?

We know guys like Ilias would be on 500k, Johnstone would be on 350k, Burgess is on 700k (contract expires this year) Arrow 650k (contract expires this year)
Surely their sums don't add up, or they have a lot of the squad on minimum wage

You just said earlier these guys are all close to minimum wage, so you won't gain anything in terms of cap space if you lose them, You just replace them with others on minimum wage

Actually Arrow is signed up until 2025, and Burgess 2024, so that is another $1.3M on two players...

this article says otherwise
Apologies, you're right, I'm wrong here.

I was thinking of this, where it mentions Damien Cook, Jai Arrow, Tom Burgess and Liam Knight do not have ratchet clauses.

EDIT: To answer your question though, yes, we have a lot of players on little coin. We're a very top-heavy squad, which will only increase with Wighton signing on. It means you run the risk of having a shit season if a couple of key players go down with injury, but it's the risk you take.

This Year?

The last few pages have been quality. Went down great with coffee. No matter how all this is spun most of the talent is collected in certain clubs for various reasons.
The media can confuse fans even more with their bullshit stories of morality while making a shitload of money in ad revenue and watching fans squabble in comments.
If your a fan of a have not club, you don't have a good team because of the following reasons:
1. Your club's player development is shit.
2. Your club doesn't manage the cap well.
3. Your club doesn't have lucrative 3rd party deals.
4. Your club is in a shit location.
5. Your club has players that no marquee players want to play with.
6. Your club has fans that marquee players don't want to play for.
7. Your club isn't a media darling so doesn't get much exposure.

Please feel free to add more.

8. Your club, despite having one of the best junior nurseries in the country, have been run by incompetent morons for the best part of 20 years save for an excellent run under Wayne Bennett ;)

Illias will be on close to a million for his next contract.

Clubs are crying out for quality halves he is probably in top 2 or 3 under 24 years of age atm..
By then Walker and cook will be gone

taffe can slot in the halves then and he’s cheap
