Rugby league was also invented after all those sports and derived from union, in fact it was the same as rugby union at first because the 'schism' between the two sports was about class, not the rules or anything like that which you well know. So let's not pretend rugby league was randomly introduced to NSW and QLD without having an already established base and platform from union

Do you have a link for the bolded?

RE: Toronto, define wildly successful? I would actually agree with you but I have a feeling my baseline is lower than yours as rugby league is a drop in the ocean in the Canadian market.

Soccer in the USA is probably the best case study for what we are talking about. The biggest sport in the world in the biggest market in the world and it pails in to insignificance compared to NFL, MLB, NBA and to a lesser extent NHL. It's not as if soccer has no history there either yet it is a 2nd tier sport and always will be much like Soccer in Australia.

I wish the NRL the best of luck in this venture and hope they make some money and they have smashed the promotional stuff out of the park IMO. If they can entice some American players over, get a small TV deal or even establish an amateur competition over there then all power to them. To suggest though that rugby league will crack that market in any meaningful way because it's "the best sport int he world" is the same level of ignorance of the AFL dopes who said the same about AFL in China, NZ or anywhere else they conceived in their delusions.

And that's ok... it's not a crack at rugby league... it's just an observation about the nature of sports popularity globally.
I think it's hard to define " crack" the US market. I would consider that we have cracked the market..if we have one in the USA:
A TV deal no matter how small that brings the game live into the US weekly and an awareness generally..
Viewership over 100k weekly.
That's a piece and noteworthy.
It'll never be fully mainstream but one can dream.

But
Interesting that Valheru mentioned cricket. Cricket is looking to get into the US market and its entry point is via expat South Asia fans. (Indian and Pakistani Americans are 1 and 2 as highest earning ethnic group in the US).

Converting is a much harder task.
But note cricket is going in in the back of 20/20.

Re the bolded bit.
Do you mean in addition to the current amateur comps?
Or they unify those?
Or they start their own NRL badged and affiliated comp?

When the nswrl was formed it had zero assets

it’s union rival owned a ground worth 10 k quid a huge sum and made huge profits from inbound tours to Australia of nz and England / gb

within two years union was basically broke

because of the rules of the game

the bit about France is in the book the forbidden game

without the Vichy banning of rugby league union would be insignificant in France

Toronto Wolfpack … highest crowd average in league one in the history of the English rugby league

pretty sure their crowds in the champ were amongst the highest ever too

imo rugby league can expand anywhere if the people behind it put the time and effort and money which rarely happens

Yeah the South Asian diaspora world wide is definitely a legit avenue cricket can use and one that no other sport really has except for soccer.

I think the problem you have is you have a semblance of a decent point but make outrageous claims in the same breath

Union insignificant in France without Vichy government? I accept league would be way bigger there than it is today but why do you believe union would be insignificant?

union. Was on its way to death in France

it’s why they went to get league banned they couldn’t compete and were going broke

I think most people seem to think that same way.

I'd throw get their domestic comp to semi decent level.

France is the level that should aim to match

Their T20 comp will be interesting to see how it goes

Shoulder to shoulder lol...
What a bunch of pre- Madonna's.

Gave the NRL bad press in the middle of a massive and important publicity drive during thier most daring venture yet...because of their self interest!

NRL appeases them to stop bad press. Basically blackmailed the NRL into unworthy status.
I'm glad this is " resolved " but this won't be forgotten.
f**k Utah RL.

I don't propose to be an expert on US culture. I reckon we have a problem, not with the game, but with our jerseys, logos, merchandise. Americans love the traditionalism of their teams uniforms and logos. A lot of our merch is absolute amateur hour and tbh, a bit of a turn off. Australian league fans accept it because they are engaged with their team.

However, when you're trying to entice new fans you've got to seduce with the entire package.

Domestic comp of France would be great but I think the goal is more to get NRL fans " viewers " and " gambler"
I think if it gets that kind of traction, it'll likely get a better Domestic scene by default, if that is noteworthy the NRL are likely to help..
Bloody exciting.

I disagree.
It'll more likely be unique and trendy, the same way people like retro jerseys or Jets ect.
