But how is all this job security going to cope if he starts to look tired ?
If IC was a miserable arrogant SOB who's mantra was " I'm just here to do a job. No guarantees, no promises. I'll coach and youse can GFY". then I'm sure we'd all be OK with the way things turned out.
It's the bullshit " nice guy" persona that IC trotted out that makes what he did wrong.
IC isn't a premiership winning coach. He's not even a great coach. His biggest asset was his image based on integrity and honesty. He can coach and as a refreshing change, appeared to hold a set of morals.
His biggest asset now is . . . . well, I guess it's his bank account.
The merkin in me wants to see it all come unstuck. Coaching your son in u/21s is hard enough . . . it has the potential to implode at NRL level.
I await the riff fans comments then . . .

That's his problem. He would have to know he is now under more pressure than any coach in the game. If it doesn't work I won't care too much beyond the normal irritation of not being successful.

I don't look at anyone in the game these days as being some paragon of virtue. They only care about their bank account like the rest of us at work. It's not like the days when the players did it as a hobby.

Does seem a great way to get around the cap, pay the coach $1.5mill a year, with the coach then bunging his son $500k a year of it to stay! Not suggesting for a minute this is the case but could if so chosen.

There is a new $5.4 mil football operations cap

Tim Brasher the latest former-Tiger complaining about the injustice of Cleary's move from the Tigers.

Looking at the past Tigers' recent history re tenure of coaches:
  • Sheens - sacked over a season early;
  • Potter - advised contract not-renewed for 2015 at end of 2014 season (i.e. effectively nil notice period); and
  • Taylor - terminated effectively immediately 3 games into 2017.
So last 3 coaches have been removed by Tigers with no notice - and they complain about the next coach looking to secure his future beyond his current contract?

Wow, heads up their own arses much?

You don’t get do you....Possibly your a little slow as a few posters have already explained, but there is a mile of difference between either Not renewing a coaches contract, or terminating a coaches contract based on not achieving a certain performance level as apposed to what Cleary did.....chalk and cheese.

Anyway you guys have Gus, any coach that signs with Penrith knows they are going to get a truck load of cash sometime in the near future for not coaching

Don't underestimate the mighty Gus Gould. It was always in his 5 year plan for a 20 year old to do the hiring and firing.

There has been lots of talk about Walters being the Broncos coach but it's now official that Seibold will take over. I think it's best for the Broncos that Seibold takes over straight away as Wayne won't have his heart in it 100% next year and now there is the possibility that players will follow him to Souths. Brisbane will have to overcome some pretty big hurdles to break the drought next year.

BTW with Walters why are people so obsessed with him being a head coach. He hasn't done anything that makes me think he will be a success as a head NRL coach. There was a big push from him from the Broncos 'old boys' saying that he won premierships for us, he is a good guy and a Broncos man. Sorry fellas but that isn't a coaching qualification. SMH hearing from Chris Johns that the CEO should get fired if Seibold fails.

When you get over your butthurt and take your Tigers lense off, you might consider "what Cleary did" was sign a contract for the period following his current contract. There was no guarantee from the Tigers that he would be extended past 2020, or even see out his current contract given Tigers management's recent track record.

He previously advised he intended to see out his Tigers contract. Signing with the Panthers wasn't going to prevent this. Did it put the Tigers in an awkward position - sure. Did he do anything other than what he thought best for the Tigers during his time there? I think no.

So why the constant bitching about how Ivan has wronged the Tigers - particularly if Madge is an upgrade? There were years of poor performance before Ivan inherited JT's clusterf**k, and the club is in a better position than when Ivan arrived - hence Go commenting on Ivan's positive impact.

Re the Warriors, Cleary had previously advised them he would not extend in order to return to Sydney. Gus approached the Warriors to negotiate an early release.

Cleary was available after 2020 - so not contracted.

Tigers asked Sheens and Taylor to break contracts when it suited the Tigers.

The obligation of the club in these contracts is to pay for the services that they have requested from the coach, if they no longer want those services than they still have to pay the coach as the Tigers have done. Albeit with some push and shove with Sheens, which i feel the Tigers were in the wrong.

See that, I;'m able to criticize the team I support when they do something I think is wrong.
If the Tigers seriously wanted the Clearys, they should have locked Ivan up long term. With all the media pressure, Nathan would likely have followed. The Tigers got caught with their pants down and Pascoe got schooled.

See, I'm also able to criticise the team you support.

Pascoe has stated Ivan asked for a release in August

Schooled? Penrith are now paying for 3 coaches next year with arguably the worst one coaching them.

After having his requested release denied, that is why he was sulking in his press conference.

Thats Tigers perogative, just as it was IC to ensure he had a 5 year contract in the bank to guarantee future employment. Clubs have been quick to cast aside contracted coaches when it suits them, seems a only fair that coaches are now giving them a taste of their own medicine!

Are you serious? One third of the way into a contract, with less that 50% success, zero games in finals and you think the Tigers should have upgraded him?

The thing I don’t understand is this, if the tigers have upgraded there coach as per Pascoe and tiger supporters why are they all over Twitter and LU rubbishining ivan and why is Pascoe in the media taking potshots at Ivan
I mean you’re happy with macguire how about moving on

I agree with you. Totally over Cleary and looking forward to the Maguire era. Penrith are going to have to live with the media circling for the next few years. My recent input has been in response to questions asked by Penrith supporters.

I hear ya, Old Panther . . . like I said, if he didn't portray himself to be righteous and all that . . . nobody would probably give a F.
It is what it is.
He has painted himself into a corner, and the chances of him coming out of it looking and smelling good are slim at best.
If it happened to your club, under the same circumstances, you'd be feeling like us WT guys as well . . . though the few weeks passing and getting a coach with credentials lets me shrug the shoulders at the whole fkked up mess this has become.
