i’m having extreme trouble trying to find a clown. I can find a person with solid leadership, but it never says “popular” the closest I have come is “solid leadership and infamous” :? :?

It depends on whether his playing skills are any good.

If he is the best leadership you have then keep him but be on the lookout for a better clown.

MQ mentioned infamous. This is not on the agreeability scale.

The scale is:
Beloved Team Member (only one of these in all of hattrick!!!)
Popular
Sympathetic
Pleasant
Controversial
Nasty

So you are looking for "popular" agreeability and "solid" leadership.

Specialities
Specialities can be great...or they can be greatly annoying. Thus, some people like specialities, while other people find them to be a nuisance. I'll leave that up to you to decide, but here's their effects...

Head:
Will often score headers from corners and free kicks and will help prevent the opposition scoring such goals against you
Will occasionally have a special event against them from a Technical or Quick opposition player

Technical:
Performs above average in sunny weather and will occasionally get a special event
Performs poorly in rainy weather

Powerful:
Performs above average in rainy weather and will occasionally get a special event
Performs poorly in sunny weather

Quick:
Performs above average in overcast or cloudy weather and will occasionally get a special event
Performs poorly in sunny or rainy weather

Unpredictable:
Will occasionally get a special event shot, or pass
Will occasionally make a suicidal error and gift the opposition a special event shot

Lineup
When picking your team, it is generally a good idea try and defend against your oponents strengths and attack their weaknesses. Remember, your left defence defends against your oponents right attack and vice versa.

Here's some examples of what would be best to do. Assume your opposition had the following ratings:

Left Defence: weak
Centre Defence: solid
Right Defence: excellent
Left Attack: formidable
Centre Attack: excellent
Right Attack: passable

You would probably want to want to have your strongest attack on your right side, so you it was attacking there weak left defence. Also, you would want to put your strongest defenders on your right side too, because their strongest attack will be coming down the left. If using only 3 defenders, it would probably be best to make your extra inner mid in the left centre back position. Having your centre back on the right side, would help strengthen the right defence a little.

If this team had a poor midfield, and you were expecting a solid midfield however, it would be beneficial to put more effort into fielding an attacking lineup than getting overly concerned about defence. Sure, you would want to make sure your defence was strongest where they would be attacking, but a normal or offensive wing back would help your attack and you would be most likely to get the vast majority of the chances in the game.

Finally, remember that a team can change their lineup around each week, so make sure you scout them before you make any of these tactical decisions.

Match Calculation
This tip will be a mixture of fact and theory, but should give you a good insight into how hattrick calculates matches.

Firstly, there are 10 possible chances to score in every match. Some of these won't even get mentioned in the report, but rest assured, all games have 10 possible chances. On top of this, there is a chance for random events to occur. These random events include specialty-related goal, goals from corners, free kicks, penalties, long-range shots, experience and stamina related goals. There is mixed feeling in the Hattrick community as to whether there is a maximum amount of random events that can possible occur in a game, but regardless, they are somewhat rare so don't rely on them to get you through a game.

The chance of getting a regular chance depends entirely on your ball possession. This is why midfield is rated so highly in hattrick. Some believe the theory is if you have say 55% possession, you will have a 55% chance of getting a chance compared to your opponent's 45% chance, however it is probably much more complex than this. Nevertheless, the greater your ball possession, the greater chance you have at getting a chance.

Once you actually have a chance, the player who is either making the pass or taking the shot is somewhat irrelevant. The success of your chances depends on your attack ratings and your oponenets corresponding defence rating and the player who takes the shot's scoring is chosen randomly (well, strikers have more of a chance of taking a shot than a midfielder obviously, it's believed there's a large random element, rather than scoreres chosen based on their scoring ability).

How important factors such a the strength of the side you are attacking down for this attack against the defence side it's up against as well as whether the keeper skill is important for saving the shot, or if the keeper's importance is all in his defence contribution, are largely unknown. But obviously, the stronger your attack is and the weaker the side your attacking, the stronger chance you have of scoring and vice versa. Keep this in mind when selecting your team and good luck.

This was posted by BjornHolmer (HT-Bjorn):

"Sounds really odd. Sure you have played him in series/cup matches, not mostly friendlies? There is a minor random element involved whether you get your fair share of expereience each week, but in the long run, that definitely should even out."

This was in reply to a question by a person who asked about a player's large amount of games but no experience increases.

This leads us to believe that the players that are chosen for experience is totally random. Also, the levels required for an experience change (level up) could possibly be random as well. This would make Experience the most unknown factor of the entire game.

Added 18 August 2003

A post by HT-Johan in the Swedish conference was roughly translated as:

Say the experience gained is 1. Players that need to be updated because of a goal, special event, injury or card get +1. Then for the rest there is a 1/3 chance that they get 3 points (and 2/3 chance they get nothing).

In national team matches there is no random, everyone gets the points.

These are a few key tips for the game. I hope they help you and your hattrick team. NWR.

I made a very interesting find over the past 24 hours.

There is a guy called dArKi from Germany/Deutschland. He calls himself a clown factory and has put many, many clowns on the market at reasonable prices. Not sure how he does this but this could be very useful for new teams.

Worth checking out at the very least. Tell him CoachSteve sent you.

Also a few more useful websites to check out

If I remember what I've heard about how clowns work, every team has a 'leader'. He doesn't have to be the leader on the field (he may not play at all), but off the field he is the one who effects everyone else. If he has a good popularity, it raises the spirits of the team; but if he's nasty or controversial it can hurt the team.

Is that how it works, or do I have it all wrong?

If that is how it goes, what happens if you have two players with Solid leadership, but only one has a good popularity?

Thanks for the friendly MQ....you pushed some of my younger inexperienced guys and a 3-1 loss was no way embarrassing for your team!

The one with the most positive influence would be considered the team leader in that situation.
