Gomes: I turned down City because I love Manchester United

038D2UL-DDD-P1_1.jpg

Portuguese midfielder Tiago Gomes has revealed he turned down a summer move to Manchester City - because he is a lifelong fan of bitter rivals Manchester United.

The under-21 international says he was offered the chance to join the Eastlands revolution but let his heart rule his head.

Instead the Estrelada da Amadora playmaker chose to join Romanian outfit Steaua Bucharest on loan and he insists he has no regrets

'I was a step away from going to the Premier League and joining Manchester City,' Gomes told Steaua's official magazine.

'But I have always been a big fan of Manchester United, a club I would love to play for at some point in my life.

'And I let my heart tell me I should join Steaua instead - a decision I don't regret.'

Well according to Fergie, he was pushed, heard a whistle, was protecting his face, and the crowd sent him off.

Yeah right mate.

he has sunk to new depths

But Ferguson, who is about to serve a two-match touchline ban and was keen to avoid a confrontation with Webb, felt Ronaldo was unlucky.

"He was trying to protect himself from the ball hitting him in the face," said the United boss.

"He thought he had heard a whistle, he got a little push as well and it is not as if he punched the ball.

"If that had been outside the box it would have been a free-kick and nothing else. But the crowd played a part and he got sent off.

"Sometimes you have to overcome these things and we overcame a lot."

Right, so that's four different excuses right there.

And Hughes sums it all up:

City boss Mark Hughes was more forthright in his opinion, feeling Ronaldo had left referee Howard Webb with little alternative to brandish the red card.

"I don't think the referee had any choice," said Hughes.

"I don't know what reason he will give for doing it but if he says the ball was going to hit him in the face why didn't he head it?"

Don't be silly. We lost by a goal to the Premier League and European Champions.

Sure we have a decent record against the Rags in recent years, and losing to those merkins is always disappointing.

But we now have long term prospects that now go past the very next Derby match and despite what United fans might say we had enough ball to opportunities to equalise against Champions of Europe on in the second half, sending off or no sending off (albeit without creating too many clear cut chances).

I can live with our results and performances against all the Super Sky Four this year, but it's the Hulls and Stokes and Newcastles and Wigans of this world that we NEED to be beating. Once we've got that sorted it's onwards and upwards. Erm... anyone know how we get THAT sorted?

Because you need to support the team that wins everything to boost your low self-esteem. Or because you're a girl and you started supporting them because "OMG Becks is SO hot!"

Right, so that's four different excuses right there.

Stop press! Make that a FIFTH excuse — a mystery Micah Richards injury!

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/article1993353.ece

CRISTIANO RONALDO has now blamed his derby-day red card on Micah Richards shouting.

The Manchester United winger — who received his second yellow card against City on Sunday for handball — first claimed he was pushed, then that he had heard a whistle and now this.

Ron said: “Rooney took the corner, I jumped and that was when I heard a shout from Richards and simultaneously the sound of a whistle. I was convinced that the ref had blown for a foul.

“I stopped trying to head the ball and score a goal. I grabbed the ball so Richards could get help.

“It never entered my mind that the referee would show me another yellow card because, for me, I hadn’t done anything wrong.

“To the contrary, after Richards yelled I thought he was hurt and needed assistance.”

I can see Whiskeynose has been teaching him well.

Personally, if I were a bandwagoner, I could find a much better one to jump on than the Eels. That should say something for me.

Bit a difference supporting a team in your homeland and supporting a team from a country you have no ties to. Remember how many Chicago Bulls singlets you saw in the '90s?

So if someone supports Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal then that is alright although they have no ties to England. But if they support Man United they must be glory hunters and jumping on a bandwagon?

Yes, all of them.

But the Rags even have a bandwagon following within the United Kingdom. What the f**k's that about.
