Miralem Pjanic claims Lyon team-mate Karim Benzema is close to completing a £38million move to Manchester United.

Benzema has been a long-term target for United, with Lyon prepared to listen to offers if the France international expresses a wish to move.

Reports had previously claimed that Benzema was willing to spend one more season with Lyon in order to maximise his prospects of playing at the 2010 World Cup.
However, he could now be on his way to Old Trafford after Pjanic revealed the 21-year-old is ready to link up with the Premier League champions.

Nearly gone

"Benzema is nearly gone to Old Trafford," Pjanic told Bosnian website Sportsport.

"The English club are willing to pay €45million (£38million) for him and it is just a question of the day when he will move to England.

"He does not have anything against going to Manchester. Our side will be reinforced by Lisandro Lopez, the Argentine forward from Porto."

Real Madrid and Arsenal had also been linked with the striker, but it appears United have won the race to sign the coveted Benzema.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is striving to replace Carlos Tevez following the end of the Argentine's two-year loan and Benzema looks to be his top target.

Ferguson has money to spend following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid and wrapped up the signing of Antonio Valencia from Wigan Athletic on Tuesday eve

He has come out and denied he said that though now.

hes a good winger... but he's not going to make up for losing Ronaldo. but then he isn't supposed to.

i would probably go for Hunterlaar over Benzema... i think Benzema is just too expensive.

with Tosic, Valencia, Rooney, Berbatov, Wellbeck & Macheda i think think the nucleus is there to replace what Ronaldo was providing.

the emphasis i feel is on Rooney to come out of Ronaldo's shadow... i think he will... and i think he could become a world player of the year in a season or so...

Huntelaar would be a good signing to add into that mix... an experienced striker who can put the ball in the back of the net. and with the rumours of him being on the way out of Madrid we may be able to get him on the cheap.

having said that.. if we got Benzema i wont complain...

I agree with what you say. Benzema seems like a lot of money for someone with Potential and who hasn't exactly ripped through the French league.

I have a suspision that this is Aulas (Lyon president) trying to up the price of his player. Fergie said in an interview recently that Welbeck will be going to the world cup in South Africa. If he thinks that highly of him, why buy Benzema?

If Hunterlaar is willing to play the squad game he would be a good shout as he is a world class talent. The other thought is if we have bought a traditional right winger and will be looking at Nani, Anderson or Tosic to play left wing, then maybe a 'proper' striker will be more useful. By proper i mean someone who stays up front (Torres, Drogba, Adebayor, Zlatan), not run down channels etc. with Rooney supporting him.

Guess we have to wait and see what will happen. Marca seem to think Madrid have signed Benzema...

Utd need some power through the centre of midfield before they look to sign a big money striker IMO. They no longer have the genius of Ronaldo to help paper over the cracks of an old and/or pedestrian central midfield.

You look at Liverpool with Gerrard/Javier/Alonso and Chelsea with Essien/Lampard/Ballack and this is where Utd must make up some ground now they've lost Ronaldo IMO.

I think we need a creative winger for the left.

Our midfield is fine.

Wellbeck is gonna own next year. Plus he doesn't have a dream of playing for Madrid. Which is a bonus..

i think we need a midfield general... we really lacked someone like that in the CL final... i still cant understand why we have both Carrick & Hargrieves. one of them have to go...

They are both different styles of players, why is it surprising to have both?

Both Fletcher and Hargo were mising from the final. Either one would fill the role of midfield general IMO.

Flethcher was a big loss, he was playing very well leading upto that final.

Now we are going to play a right midfielder who will defend, it will free up our central midfielders to make more runs upfront.

Fat lot of good those midfields have done them lately.

We need a bloody striker. I can't believe we missed Benzema when he only went for €35M (I know, "only €35M", what a ridiculous transfer window it's been). Zlatan and Eto'o are about the only forwards left available but Zlatan would probably want more than we'd pay in wages and Eto'o only wants the megabucks on offer at City so we're out of luck there too.

This breakout season everyone's predicting for Welbeck better be pretty f**king amazing to make up for what we've lost so far.

But it will be though, thats why we held onto Ronaldo for an extra year, to make sure he is old enough.

Possebon heads out on loan
Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Possebon will spend the entire 2009/10 season on loan at Portuguese side Sporting Braga.

The 20-year-old joined United from Brazil’s Internacional in January 2008, and went on to make his senior Reds debut in the 2008/09 Premier League curtain-raiser against Newcastle United.

He made a total of three starts and five substitute appearances during the course of the season but, due to the first team’s wealth of central midfielders, Rodrigo found further first team opportunities hard to come by.

He spent the majority of the season in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reserves as the Reds won two cups and finished second in the Barclays Premier Reserve League (North).

Braga finished fifth in the Liga Sagres last season and will be taking part in the 2009/10 Europa League, formerly the UEFA Cup.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in out-of-contract Newcastle United striker Michael Owen.

Owen is looking for a new club after allowing his Magpies deal to expire and a number of Premier League clubs are considering a move.

The likes of Hull City and Stoke City have signalled their intent to bring him in but it now seems Premier League champions Manchester United have also entered the chase.

Sky Bet have slashed their odds on the 29-year-old moving to Old Trafford amid claims that tentative talks have taken place between Owen's representatives and United officials.

Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to bolster his strike-force following the departures of Carlos Tevezand Cristiano Ronaldo
Karim Benzema had appeared to be a primary target but the Frenchman is now on his way to big-spending Real Madrid.

Free agent Owen would be a much cheaper option but United have yet to make any comment on the reports.

Well, life has been good to my beloved Manchester United since I last posted around here (2005). It's a shame I come back to the forums minus Ronaldo however, he was the most enjoyable player I have watched (live too by the way) since the Great Eric Cantona!

Look forward to keeping up with the team here at LU ;-)

Hopefully it's just paper talk, I highly doubt Owen would want to sign for us, I see him signing for Everton...
