The misery of the Colts

Ohhh dear, break out the soothing cream for these poor bastards.

The one year they have the chance to host the Super Bowl on their home turf, and they screw it up in the worst possible way. 0-12 and walking into a nigh impossible game against the Ravens.

Any Colts fans on here that want to lament?

I was talking to a Colts fan last night. He didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Their poor showing this season has to be more then not having Manning.

Actually. Most of it is. Their entire team was built around having Peyton Manning. Their defense was used to long fields and long breaks because they knew their offense with Manning was going to deliver those things on a regular basis. Their running game was built around not having to rely on it because Peyton was so good throwing it. Their entire play-calling on offense was build around Manning being able to change the play at the line after getting a look at the defense.

So, in short, with Manning they'd be looking at somewhere between 9 and 11 wins this season. Without him they get to trade some good assets for him next season and pick up Andrew Luck in the process.

.

they had 12 years to make sure they had a competent backup in case manning got injured and they never had one, ever. not sure why when an injury is always one hit away.

And now they are free to do what they want with 12 :D

Yep.
It's pretty much the main argument of why Peyton Manning is better than Tom Brady.

Having a crap season is having a crap season, the fact that they'll get Andrew Luck (if they want him, or if he wants to go there) doesn't change the fact that they haven't won a single game.

agreed on manning
the fact this colts team without manning goes from SB contender to 0-16 contender shows how great P.Manning and what he means to that team

Brady is a great QB and a sure fire HOFer, but Cassell who is an average QB at best, still got the pats 10 wins. They barely missed a beat without Brady.

They'd be stupid not to pick up Andrew Luck.

Even if Manning was to come back next season at 100-percent, at 36 YRS young, he has 3-4 years at best left in him.

The only positive out of this horrid season for the Colts is the 2012 NFL Draft.

so what do you do?

i trade manning personally. back fit you could probably get a team to bite on picks galore.

plenty of teams would take peyton mainning.

I sit Luck behind Manning for 1 year, reassess your options based on Manning's play and health and Luck's progression, if you like what Luck offers in a year, you trade Manning then, if you think manning still has something to offer the team and Luck, you sit Luck for another year behind Manning

Luck is going to be a good QB, give him time to sit and learn from someone like P.Manning, and when you start Luck, you've got a weapon from day dot.

I think the colts should definitely take a page out of the Packers-Rodgers book

Exactly. After this season, I think the Colts will want to do all they can to make next season as successfull as possible.
If they play there cards right, they'll be in contention again for the next 10 years or more.

you do realise that the exact same side minus brady went 17-1?

Brady is better, the manning myth was exposed years ago

now, even with Manning this year the Colts are 6-7 win side AT ABSOULTE MOST, the reason why? well poor drafts over the years, together with aging players not to mention absolutly no contingency plan in place for if he ever went down and out, simple as that, their last few years drafts have been horrible, absolutely no back ups in place, we saw last year Peyton throw about 15 interceptions whilst addai was missing, similar situation this year when another positional player goes down.

Bellicheck was smart enough to plan around if Brady ever wenty down, the Colts didn't.

Not to mention, Peyton really was showing signs of sliding last year, now this could be just him or what i mentioned above, regardless, if they draft Luck i wouldn't be surprised if they trade Peyton for hopefully a 4th or a 5th if very lucky, I dare say Eli has much much more trade value then Peyton, on the other hand, 3 time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady continues to go from strength to strength.

So in this alternate universe where a fully fit Manning wins either 6-7 games this season, who won the Superbowl. Was it Green Bay? Did Green Bay go undefeated?
What else happened in this alternate universe?

Trading Manning, after what he has done for that team is probably the most disrespectful thing you could do to a quarterback like him.
At least with Montana, Young was in the system for a while before he was traded.

All this for a quarterback that hasn't played a down in the NFL, he should sit behind Manning for a year and then see where that goes.
Or trade several decent picks to actually fill positions that need filling and draft for a quarterback later, this is a decent quarterback draft and I don't believe Luck is going to be the only successful one.

Yep. The last full season Manning played, the colts were 10 win team and division champs.
Manning had the playoff game against the jets won last year only for the defence to screw it up.
No one can say what the Colts would have done this year with a fully fit Manning.

If the Colts do trade Manning I could only hope the Dolphins had a go, but they'd probably pick up Grossman instead.
