The NRL Draw - How does it work?

Can anyone explain how the NRL comes up with the Draw for the season? Obviously every team plays the others twice, but how do they determine who plays a team for the second time? Is it random or is there some method to the madness? Thanks....

To give the obvious answer: badly.

That aside, the teams are sorted into two groups of eight. They play each other team in their group of 8 twice, and each other team in the other group of eight once. The byes account for the rest of the games needed to make up the premiership rounds.

Isn't that only 22 games?

NRL DRAW

The regular season, also known as the NRL draw, lasts for 26 weeks – 24 weeks of competition and two bye weeks for each team. Throughout the 26-week NRL draw, each team plays every team in the opposing pool twice – once at home and once on the road (16 games total). They also play six of the seven other teams in their own pool once (6 games total). They play the remaining team twice (2 games total) to equal 24 games.

The two pools of the NRL draw are determined by each team’s previous season performance. Each team earns points for each game. For example, they get:

Two for each bye week
Two for a win
One for a draw
No points for a loss
These points are then used to divide the 16 teams into two pools of equal strength.

OK so how are the two pools created? What positions on the ladder determine which pools each team goes into? Thats what I want to know.

Each club submits a list of teams they want at home and the NRL sorts the groups so each club gets as much of its wishes fulfilled as possible. Channel 9 also plays a role in the decision making to maximise ratings.

Easy answer (OP)

They ask every club what their wishes are draw wise.

And then ignore it and use one of these

BunniesMan is right for once. They got rid of pools years ago. Teams nominate in order the teams they want to play at home and the nrl does the draw trying to suit all parties.

Games like Dogs v Eels, Roosters v Rabbits, Broncos v Titans etc. are always twice a season.

But if teams get to pick, surely they would pick the crap teams like Parra and Roosters and Penrith etc.

Correct ....it used to be three pools...they ditched it I think when GC came in...worked easy with 15 teams

You could work out the next seasons pool immediately after rd 26 was completed.

Hard to recall how it went

I think you played your own pool of 5 (4 games) once and the other two pools of five twice (20 games) + two byes = 26 rounds

Pool A ....Pool B.....Pool C
1st.........2nd........3rd
6th.........5th........4th
7th.........8th........9th
12th.......11th......10th
13th......14th.......15th

So if this was in next year Bulldogs would play raiders sharks Knights & roosters once and everyone else twice

Yep. That's certainly an option.

Since 2008 each club submits a list of the teams they would like to play at home in order of preference. Each club can decide their preferences based on any criteria they like. Traditional rivals, strong crowd pullers, easy opponents, whatever. For the 2008 season each club got their top four preferences and six of their top seven.

John Grant places an A3 piece of paper on the ground. Undoes his pants and squats over it. Takes a shit on it. Signs it. Calls it the NRL Draw.

& throw away hundreds of thousands in gate receipts ... hardly
you pick the sides that will pull in the punters
plus ..this is the NRL, not the AFL

ours is as even .. close comp
most sides from 16 up will usually give you a fair hit out

Lol no matter which way you try to spin it the fact that the teams get to choose who they play twice means that there is something inherently wrong with the draw and the process. If I were choosing I would put my requests in based on a combination of the biggest crowd pullers and what I perceived to be an easier draw.

In a competition where every team doesn?t play every other team the same amount of times the draw will never be truly fair unless you adopt a conference/division style competition.
