I believe that you need to have a long term vision thinking short term is what BA used to do and look where that got him...
You need both. Teams need to 'win now' as well as plan for the future. You don't throw away the now for the future. This isn't the NBA, we don't get draft picks. The signing of Pezet is exhibit A of Ryles also thinking short term.

You get development. Whether developing that player or not becomes worth it for lesser wins, is the trade off Ryles has to decide. And the Papalii for Brown was far less of a gamble than the Iongi for Gutho or <insert rotation of props> for RCG.

We were coming second last on 4 wins when Joash started at 5/8 fairly sure prioritizing next year is better than worrying about not upsetting you about Brown not playing..

Pezet singing doesn't mean he is thinking short term at all... It gives him time to come up with a long term 5/8 option instead of scrambling around for a 5/8 next year.

2027 we have 3 in club options plus whoever may become available from another club.

TBF to him if he hadn’t tweaked my interest into how we went without Brown, I thought Brown was left out of a lot more games than he was
Me too. Didn't realise that he still played 16 games for the season. Talk about complaining about a nothing burger.

No plenty of us dumb merkins said Ryles tested and played Joash at 6 last season to see if he would be a viable option for 6 in the future we can now put a line through him thankfully we didn't go into season 2026 with thinking he could be an option and that has led us to getting Pezet next season.

The coach’s job is to win games, which is why Ryles wanted Pezet for a year. The long term vision is the responsibility of higher ups at the club, including the list management team, which Ryles isn’t part of.

What's the list management team? Who is on the team?
I was just pulling your leg. In fact there is no list management team. Instead the NRL team’s head coach, a man who has spent his entire adult life hanging around dopey footballers, is suddenly given a $12M+ budget to spend on dopey footballers. He can do whatever the f**k he likes. I believe Ryles is close to sacking the CEO and the club board as well. But first he needs to deliver the GM’s annual performance review. I believe a few LU posters will be helping him.

It was a legit question btw.

So I assume by your response you don't really know.

  • Mark O’Neill is the General Manager of Football - he oversees recruitment, the junior representative program, high performance, player contracting, and football operations which would include salary cap compliance.
  • James Shepherd is the Head of Pathways, responsible for overseeing the club’s pathways initiatives.
  • Isaac DeGois is the Pathways Recruitment Manager, helping identify and attract young talent.
There are a f**kload of other people involved. They are listed here:

Since you’re new here, you probably haven’t seen this great post of mine. I’ve reposted it here, with my permission:

Ryles told us about his involvement in recruitment a few weeks ago (from 1m 45s):

"...and especially for our list management group, they've been very busy. So they do most of the work and I just give them a hand."

So there you go. There is still a committee of people that is responsible for management of the roster, and the coach has some input into that. Just like under the previous coach. If you've seen the Dawn of the Dolphins doco on Stan you will know that it even works this way when Wayne Bennett is the head coach, though you'd assume he has earnt the right to have more input than the majority of other coaches in the NRL.
