Reds edge tense top-of-the-table thriller
29.09.2007
Bayern’s successful start to the season continued
as a
first-half Luca Toni goal gave the Bundesliga
leaders a
narrow victory over Bayer Leverkusen, who started
the day
second in the table, in front of 22,500
spectators in the
BayArena.
The first half saw a host of chances created at
either end,
including what seemed a valid goal from Miroslav
Klose that
was deemed not to have crossed the line and a
Leverkusen
shot that hit the post, before Klose and Toni
combined to
give Bayern the lead.
A more attritional second half saw fewer scoring
opportunities, but the Reds held firm at the back
to record
an important victory than consolidates their
position at
the top of the table with a four-point lead over
Schalke,
who move up to second place after Leverkusen’s
defeat, and
five ahead of surprise package Karlsrühe.
Rensing steps in for Kahn
Bayern were faced with a last-minute change in
goal after
Oliver Kahn injured his elbow while warming up.
Michael
Rensing, who has yet to lose in a competitive
game for the
first team, stood in for his first appearance of
the
season.
However, the first action was at the other end as
Zé
Roberto sent Klose through in the first minute,
and his
pass only narrowly evaded strike partner Toni.
The ball was
cleared for a corner from which Martin Demichelis
shot well
over.
But within three minutes the visitors were on the
back foot
as Bayer made their first clear chance and
Marcell Jansen
had to clear a header from Manuel Friedrich off
the line.
After six minutes Rensing was in action for the
first time,
saving well from striker Stefan Kießling.
Klose’s ‘goal’ missed by the officials
There was no let-up in the pace as chances were
created at
either end. First Zé Roberto broke through on his
own in
the 10th minute, only to be denied by a fingertip
save from
Rene Adler in the Leverkusen goal.
But just with a minute it was Bayern’s turn to
breathe a
sigh of relief as Tranquillo Barnetta’s shot
crashed
against the post.
In the 13th minute Klose thought he had given
Bayern the
lead when his shot from 18 metres hit the
underside of the
bar and came down behind the line, but the
referee’s
assistance failed to signal a goal.
But Rensing was soon in action again, brilliantly
turning
aside a close-range effort from Kießling for a
corner, then
denying Simon Rolfes.
In the 25th minute his alertness saved the
visitors as the
young goalkeeper came swiftly off his line to
take the ball
off the toe of Leverkusen’s Greek striker
Theofanis Gekas.
Six minutes later it was Arturo Vidal who escaped
the
attentions of the Bayern defenders, only for
Rensing to get
to the ball first.
Klose sets it up for Toni
After a first half in which either side could
have scored
two or three times, it was Bayern that eventually
took the
lead five minutes before half-time, thanks to a
deft
combination between the in-form striking duo as
Klose took
a pass from Franck Ribéry, beat his man and
rolled the ball
across the face of the goal for Toni to slide the
ball
home.
The visitors had a setback just four minutes into
the
second half when Klose was left on the turf after
a clash
with Kießling. Treatment to his injured right
knee by the
side of the pitch failed to resolve the problem
and Fabian
Schweinsteiger came on in his place.
The midfielder was immediately at the centre of
the action
as Bayern launched a counter-attack after
clearing a
corner. Hamit Altintop delivered a through ball
that was
too deep for Toni, and although Schweinsteiger
recovered
the ball, he took too long and the chance was
gone.
Desperate efforts to equalise
The home side were lacking the cutting edge they
had
demonstrated in the first half, and the chances
started to
fall to Bayern, with Toni first failing to get
his shot in
properly from Altintop’s pass, then just failing
to get a
header on goal from Zé Roberto’s cross.
Leverkusen brought on Michal Papadopoulos for
Gekas and
Sascha Dum for Vidal in a bid to get back on
level terms.
The home side forced a succession of corners as
Bayern
found it hard to get out of their own half, but
their
increasingly desperate efforts started to leave
gaps at the
back.
Ribéry shot narrowly wide from 20 metres in the
84th
minute, then Jansen shot weakly after being
played through
by the French midfielder. And two minutes from
the end of
regulation time, Altintop drove a shot into the
side
netting.
Despite four minutes added for injury and
stoppage time,
during which Leverkusen’s Friedrich and Gonzo
Castro both
received yellow cards, Bayern held on to record
an
important victory that consolidates their
position at the
top of the table thanks to Toni’s sixth goal of
the season.

Reaction to Leverkusen v Bayern
Hitzfeld: a hard-fought victory
29.09.2007
With a win over the second-place team and an
extension of
Bayern’s lead in the championship, Ottmar
Hitzfeld should
have had plenty to be pleased about after the
narrow 1-0
victory in Leverkusen.
However, the Bayern coach saw too many things
about his
team that did not please him.
Reactions to the game:
Ottmar Hitzfeld:
“Leverkusen started very well, imposed a high
pace on the
game and showed some excellent moves. We had a
few problems
organising ourselves defensively. We changed the
formation
and let Miro Klose play a little more detached
from the
midfield. In the last 15 minutes of the first
half we began
to control the game. In the second half we were
closer to a
second goal, although in the closing stages the
pressure
was intense again. It was a hard-fought victory –
we
weren’t as strong as we had been recently and we
didn’t
play as well on the counter-attack. This has been
our
hardest test so far.”
Miroslav Klose:
“We had a hard job of it today. Leverkusen played
well and
put us under a lot of pressure. I think we had
some real
problems in the first half.”
Rudi Völler (Leverkusen director of football):
“We saw a splendid game from both team, and we
played
extremely well in the first 25 minutes. We had a
few
scoring chances and put Bayern under a bit of
pressure. But
against a team as good as Bayern you have to take
advantage
of this kind of domination by scoring if you want
to have a
chance over 90 minutes. Still, I wouldn’t say
this is a
setback for us.”
Michael Skibbe (Leverkusen coach):
“Bayern deserved the win because of their
calmness.
However, I am very satisfied with the performance
of my
team, they played really well.”

Inside Bayern
Rensing still unbeaten
29.09.2007
When Michael Rensing keeps goal for Bayern in the
Bundesliga, the Reds can’t be beaten – and it’s
still true
after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
In his 14th match in the top flight Rensing, who
had to
step in at short notice after Bayern captain
Oliver Kahn
injured his elbow during the warm-up, helped to
secure a
19th victory with a series of good saves.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper, who is set to take
over from
Kahn next season, has also played in four draws.

World-class line-up
Able and resolute Reds remain undefeated
30.09.2007
This is the weekend when the Bayern squad
traditionally
makes a communal visit to the Oktoberfest.
Last year's outing took place under a cloud
following a 1-0
defeat against bottom club VfL Wolfsburg, but the
mood will
be a lot more positive this time round after
Saturday's
narrow 1-0 victory away to the team in second up
to that
point, Bayer Leverkusen.
"I'm delighted we were able to swing the top
match of the
weekend in our favour," Bayern coach Ottmar
Hitzfeld
commented after Sunday training, before the
squad,
officials and their families made their way to
the
Oktoberfest grounds for a pleasant and relaxing
afternoon.
Toughest test
The atmosphere was rather less relaxed some 24
hours
earlier at the BayArena, packed to its 22,500
capacity.
"Leverkusen provided our toughest test so far,"
Hitzfeld
observed, complimenting Bayer on "pushing us to
the limit"
in an eventful, high-tempo encounter.
General Manager Uli Hoeness agreed: "We had to
work
extremely hard for victory against a very good
Leverkusen
side.“
The league leaders remain undefeated, but the
home team
came preciously close to opening the scoring in
an
impressive opening half hour.
However, Bayer hit a post on ten minutes and
otherwise ran
up against an obdurate Michael Rensing, a late
and capable
replacement for Oliver Kahn after the veteran
keeper
injured an elbow in the warm-up.
Plaudits for Rensing, Klose and Toni
"We weren't very well organised in the first half
hour, we
had a very tough time," acknowledged Mark van
Bommel.
"Leverkusen played good football, they let the
ball do the
work," Marcell Jansen agreed. Added Hitzfeld:
"Michael
Rensing was the reason we didn't go a goal
behind.“
With the young goalkeeper outstanding at one end
of the
field, star strikers Mirsolav Klose and Luca Toni
were
confirming their potency and class at the other.
Klose was robbed of a 13th minute "goal" by a
poor
refereeing decision when the ball bounced off the
crossbar
and over the line, prompting an angry reaction
from
Hoeness: "You have to give the goal. There can be
no
excuses.“
However, there was no doubting the legitimacy of
Toni's
40th minute winner from Klose's intelligent
assist.
Völler praises Bayern's 'world-class' line-up
"They're there when it matters. It's amazing,"
Hoeneß
commented after the league's leading strike pair
took their
combined tally to 14 goals.
"It's fantastic up to now, like a fairytale.
They're
exceeding expectations," Hitzfeld chimed in,
while Toni set
his sights even higher: "We each understand how
the other
likes it, but we can get even better.“
After half-time, Bayern turned in a display
bristling with
trademark intelligence and resolve.
"We were closer to going 2-0 up than Leverkusen
were to
equalising," Hitzfeld analysed. "Bayern came here
and
played like a world-class team," Bayer Director
of Sport
Rudi Völler commented admiringly.
The Bavarians' sixth victory in eight matches
sees them
extend their lead in the Bundesliga to four
points over new
second-placed outfit Schalke 04.

Bayer Leverkusen 0-1 Bayern Munich
PA
LEVERKUSEN, September 29 (Bundesliga) - Bayern
Munich edged
the top-of-the-table clash at Bayer Leverkusen to
take
control in the Bundesliga.
The visitors now have a four-point lead at the
summit after
Luca Toni's goal five minutes before the break
was enough
to earn the win.
It could have been more for Bayern, who had a
goal
controversially ruled out early on when the
referee
adjudged Miroslav Klose's shot had not crossed
the line.
It was Klose who had the chance to give Bayern
the lead as
early as the first minute, but his effort was
cleared by
Leverkusen midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta.
Eight minutes later Ze Roberto fired the ball
from inside
the penalty area, but Leverkusen keeper Rene
Adler coped
with the danger.
Controversy came in the 13th minute when Klose
took the
ball past two Leverkusen defenders and shot at
goal.
The ball bounced off the underside of the bar and
appeared
to land over the line, but the referee did not
award a
goal.
At the other end, Sergej Barbarez set up Stefan
Kiessling,
whose firm strike was well saved by Munich keeper
Michael
Rensing.
Bayern deservedly took the lead after 40 minutes.
Franck Ribery headed the ball to Klose, who
shrugged off
the attentions of Manuel Friedrich before
crossing for Toni
to fire home from four yards.
Munich again had the better of the chances in the
second
half and could have gone two up when Adler could
not
control Ribery's shot, but defender Karim Haggui
managed to
clear the danger.
Adler redeemed himself with a point-blank save
from Toni's
header on the hour.
Leverkusen's best chance of the half fell to
Theofanis
Gekas, but his volley was straight into the arms
of
Rensing.
In the last 10 minutes, Bayern had two chances to
double
their lead, but Ribery and Hamit Altintop both
shot just
wide from the edge of the box.

Luca Toni scored his sixth goal of the season
Bayern win top clash
Ottmar Hitzfeld's team won the top clash at
second-placed
Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 and stay unbeaten.
Bayern are now four points clear of FC Schalke
04, Bayer
suffered their first defeat after six unbeaten
competitive
matches.
Miroslav Klose set up Luca Toni for the decisive
goal with
40 minutes gone. It was the sixth goal of the
season for
the Italian World Cup winner.
Rensing outstanding
Bayern were the more mature team and had an
outstanding
Michael Rensing in goal for the injured Oliver
Kahn.
Rensing denied Stefan Kießling, Theofanis Gekas
and Arturo
Vidal who all had chances to fire Bayer ahead.
Additonally
the hosts were unlucky when Tranquillo Barnetta
hit the
post.
Dangerous Toni
Bayern were dangerous throughout, too. Toni (26,
34) had
two good opportunities before he scored.
Franck Ribery (52) could have doubled Bayern's
lead but was
denied by Bayer keeper Rene Adler.
Leverkusen's best chance for an equaliser was
missed by
Gekas (62).

Star strikers Toni-Klose keep Bayern top of
Bundesliga
by Ryland James
September 29, 2007
STUTTGART, Germany (AFP) - Bayern Munich are now
four
points clear at the top of the Bundesliga as the
Miroslav
Klose-Luca Toni double-act struck again to seal a
1-0 win
over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
The duo now have 14 league goals between them
after eight
games and the pair combined again when German
striker
Klose's pass just before half-time gave Italian
World Cup
winner Toni his sixth goal in just seven games.
The win leaves Bayern undefeated after eight
games and with
a goal difference of 19 already, it is looking
more and
more likely they will be crowned German champions
for the
21st time at the end of the season.
There was an upset when defending champions VfB
Stuttgart
were humbled by resurgent Hansa Rostock.
This was a third straight win for Rostock,
runners-up in
last season second division, having lost their
first five
games, and Stuttgart's fifth defeat in eight
games.
Rostock took the lead when midfielder Tobias
Rathgeb
smashed home his free-kick on 16 minutes and
Stuttgart were
2-0 down when Brazilian defender Orestes Alves
scored two
minutes later.
Germany's player of the year Mario Gomez hit a
consolation
goal in the 73rd minute, but it was a poor
performance from
the side who face Barcelona at home in the
Champions League
on Tuesday night.
There was a goal fest at Werder Bremen as they
warmed up
for their Champions League clash with Olympiacos
on
Wednesday night by hammering Arminia Bielefeld
8-1.
Bremen were 4-1 up at half-time and two goals
from Hugo
Almeida and two headers by Boubacar Sanogo, both
of which
were created by in-form midfielder Diego, who
scored the
last goal, sealed the rout. The win puts Bremen
fifth in
the table.
Hamburg conceded a late equaliser to draw 2-2
with VfL
Wolfsburg, while VfL Bochum slugged it with
Nuremberg until
a late goal by Nuremberg midfielder Zvjezdan
Misimovic gave
the German Cup holders a point in the 3-3 draw.
Last season's second-division champions Karlsruhe
are now
up to third in the table and earned their fourth
win from
four games with a 3-1 win at home to Borussia
Dortmund.
On Friday night, Schalke 04 maintained their
unbeaten
record with a 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin.
But it came at a price with their Turkish striker
Halil
Altintop limping off with a leg injury and will
miss the
next three weeks, including the Champions League
game
against Rosenborg on Wednesday.

Bayern beat Leverkusen to stay atop Bundesliga
By Erik Kirschbaum
BERLIN, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Luca Toni tapped in a
Miroslav
Klose cross just before half-time to give
unbeaten Bayern
Munich a 1-0 victory in a top-of-the-table clash
at Bayer
Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
France midfielder Franck Ribery headed over to
Germany
striker Klose, who spun around defender Manuel
Friedrich on
the left and sent a pinpoint cross to Toni
streaking into
the middle for the match-winner in the 40th
minute.
Bayern, who also had a Klose goal that bounced in
off the
crossbar and then out again disallowed in the
13th minute,
held onto first place with 20 points from their
eight
matches while Leverkusen slipped from second to
fourth on
14 points.
Bayern lead Schalke 04, the only other unbeaten
side, by
four points.
Schalke moved into second after beating Hertha
Berlin 1-0
on Friday while newly promoted Karlsruhe SC
jumped to third
with a 3-1 win at home over Borussia Dortmund.
Champions VfB Stuttgart suffered a humilating 2-1
defeat at
lowly Hansa Rostock -- their fourth away loss in
a row --
ahead of their Champions League match on Tuesday
against
Barcelona.
KLOSE INJURED
In an entertaining match in Leverkusen, Toni got
his sixth
goal of the season. The Italy striker joined
Bayern in the
off-season along with Klose and Ribery as part of
a
70-million euro ($96 million) spending spree.
Klose leads the league with eight while Toni is
second with
his six. Together the duo that German tabloids
dub "Kloni"
have 14 goals -- two more than Leverkusen's total
of 11 and
more than every other team except Schalke (15)
and Werder
Bremen (18).
"It was a hard-fought victory," Bayern coach
Ottmar
Hitzfeld told Premiere televison. "There were
some critical
moments. The ball was clearly over the line on
the
disallowed goal. After a call like that everyone
is a bit
nervous."
Klose, who limped off with a knee injury in the
50th minute
after a collision with Leverkusen's Stefan
Kiessling, said
it was an important victory for Bayern over the
club that
had a six-match unbeaten streak going in.
"Leverkusen played well, kept us under pressure
and caused
us some problems," said Klose.
After the match, Bayern commercial manager Uli
Hoeness said
Klose's knee injury was not serious.
"He got a knock on the same spot where Naldo hit
him a few
months ago," he said, referring to the Werder
Bremen
defender.
Bayern goalkeeper Michael Rensing, a late
replacement after
Oliver Kahn suffered an injury warming up for the
match,
turned in another outstanding short-notice
performance.
Rensing had three big saves in the first half,
denying
Stefan Kiessling, Theofanis Gekas, and Arturo
Vidal before
Tranquillo Barnetta hit the near post.
Bayern had their chances at the other end.
Leverkusen
goalkeeper Rene Adler had three fine saves as
well,
stopping Toni twice in the first half and Ribery
after the
break.
