With the announcement of Johns' future in rugby league set to be laid to rest shortly at 1pm, I thought I'd start a dedicated thread where for the next 20 or so minutes we can speculate about his future, and then once the announcement has been made we can either disagree/agree with his decision.

Personally I think he will be right to play out the rest of this season, but he will announce his retirement from all forms of football after the conclusion of this season.

Yeah I am of the opinion that he was going to try to play out 2008 as well, but the latest going s on of his neck have probably made up the decision for him. If it is bad news, then I suppose we need to recognise that his future after football is of the utmost importance and he would want to be able to get out of bed every morning.

If it is good news, he would probably be best off sitting out this week too and coming back against the Broncs next Sunday night. Either way, it's going to be a tension filled next twenty to thirty minutes or so.

Oh and he'll come back vs Broncos in round 6 - he'll want the extra week off and his 250th to be at home infront of a packed EAS against his greatest rivals Lockyer and the Broncos.

He'll be fine, could be something as simple as the consulting doctor has a priority case.

Its more than likely a external issue delaying the decision, if its a problem then he quits, pure and simple...................not talk about it for 4 hours.

Joey retirement rumours rife
By staff writers and wires
April 10, 2007 SPECULATION that Newcastle Knights captain Andrew Johns might retire from rugby league today is rife after the club called a press conference on his future.

Johns was due to front a 1pm (AEST) press conference at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle, New South Wales, where the results of scans on his injured neck were to be revealed.

However, Johns's manager, John Fordham, addressed the gathered media to say any announcement had been delayed until 4pm (AEST).

"Andrew had a cat scan done this morning and that's been looked at by Professor Yeo and (Newcastle club doctor) Neil Halpin, with Andrew," Fordham said.

"There are still some considerations being made about the findings of the scan.

"No decision has been made yet in relation to his future football career but that will be determined in the next hour or so."

Asked if the delay meant the scan results on the former Australia captain were of more concern than initially though, Fordham said: "No.

"It's a process that's obviously very important because it's dealing with his ongoing football career."

Johns, 32, aggravated a neck injury in a collision at training last Thursday after initially hurting it in his team's loss to Canberra Raiders last Monday.

Johns has a history of neck injuries. He was forced to miss the last five matches of the 2003 season because of a bulging disc, which threatened to end his career at the time.

The two-time NRL Premiership winner is contracted to play with the Knights until the end of the 2008 season but was expected to make a decision on whether he would play on again next season midway through this year.

"We just can't speculate the outcome of the scans," Fordham told Sydney tabloid The Daily Telegraph yesterday.

"I have spoken with Andrew and he is very reasoned."

"He understands the situation and that the outcome of the tests will have a determining influence on his football career."

"He is certainly aware that it is a serious matter."

Johns has played club record 249 first grade games for the Knights as well as playing 23 matches for New South Wales, 21 Tests for Australia and was a member of the Kangaroos' 1995 and 2000 World Cup-winning teams.

Johns also had a brief stint with English club Warrington, where he played three matches for the Wolves in 2005.

ANDREW Johns, the greatest rugby league player in the world, will announce this afternoon that he is quitting rugby league after meeting with his doctor and management today.

The Daily Telegraph Online can reveal the man regarded as one of the greatest players of all-time will announce his retirement at a 4pm press conference.

He reached his decision over lunch with his manager John Fordham in Newcastle today meeting with spinal specialists and undergoing cat scans on the neck injury he suffered last Thursday in a collision with team-mates Daniel Abraham and Adam Woolnough.

He was due to tell his Knights' teammates this afternoon at 3pm.

The 32-year-old half-back will be recognised as one of the greatest players in the history of rugby league - some even believing him to be the best.

Johns was part of Newcastle's premiership-winning sides in 1997 (ARL) and again in 2001, when he led the Knights to a 30-24 win over Parramatta.

In a stellar career, Johns played 23 State of Origin games for NSW and represented Australia in 21 Test matches, including the 1995 World Cup and the 2001 Kangaroo tour.

Johns, who has scored more points and played more games for Newcastle than any other player in the club's history, injured his neck previously during a match against Manly in 2002.
