If he goes at a rate of 2 per match there's 21 games left so he can score 42 more tries and he should be able to demolish the NRL try scoring record.

I think Tonga needs a bit of credit for Semi's success. He has managed to get the ball away many times to Semi in space.

lets not count our (Semi's) chickens yet

or maybe we should predict how many he will score in the challenge cup final ... anyone booked their tickets yet?

When you consider Sio was our leading try-scorer last year with 10, Semi bagging 6 in 3 games is is pretty exciting.

Kiss if death thread, potentially up there with Stagger's who wants to go to the world club challenge thread from yesteryear

A huge amount. You can see the way tonga goes out of his way to speak with him. He also goes out of his way to get him the ball. He is actively mentoring and improving him and encouraging him. It gives everyone confidence too that we actually have some weapons.

If only Tonga played it safe with 1 minute to go with the game on the line.... But yes he is playing well.

Great thread. 21 games to go, 17 tries to draw equal.

A couple of 2-try performances here and there should allow Semi to not score some weeks and still get there.

And in 1982 they played 26 rounds (two extra games) as well! Though Ella is only down as having played 25 games in 1982 (including our three finals), so 22 regular season games if the 23 tries are only counted from competition rounds?

Apart from Hayne's 17 tries from 16 games in his debut year, when was the last time we had a player score more than 15 tries in a season? Radradra's nearly halfway there already... I think even in 2001 where we scored more tries than any other club in a season they were evenly split and no-one got more than 13 or 14.

Maybe Lyon in 2003? Bagged 5 against Cronulla.

I think we have been lacking a natural try scorer for a long time now. We have needed a bloke who just has the uncanny knack of being able to find the line more so than the average winger.

Having a Morris, Uate, Folau, Blacklock etc is a real luxury and although Semi isn't in the same league as those blokes yet he really does look like a out and out 4 point machine.

I think the last time we had a winger explode onto the scene like this was Hayne. From the get go he just managed to find the line and you sat back and thought 'this kid has something' obviously Hayne had a lot more strings to his bow in terms of natural ability and was always destined to make a fullback.

Semi on the other hand just looks a natural winger... the guy is a pure athlete, big, strong, quick, elusive and can leap. The other thing that impressed me is his dominance in defence, he really makes a point to dominate his opponent when he makes a tackle, dumps them hard and really makes an effort to get them on their back to slow down the play the ball.

Also I totes have a semi after proof reading that...

Lyon scored 14 tries in 2003.

Cheers mate. I was able to dig up and answer my own question, Hodgson actually got 17 tries in 2001 which was more than I thought, Grothe got 15 tries in 2005... no others since the 80's though. It just surprises me we haven't had any players that have come close to topping the try scorer's list since then.
