The Origin Concept

Ratings and crowds are still extremely strong, having said that we should be preparing for life after Origin (which will happen one day with more Kiwis, Englishmen and Islanders & PNG players in the NRL).

I think rep weekend could grow into something great if we keep growing it slowly and steadily, there is plenty of Origin style passion in the Pacific tests and we need to build the Kangaroos v Kiwi rivalry so that when the origin flame does finally extinguish, the international game is ready to step up.

Of course, if it ever happens at all, it will take decades for Origin to decline to that point but that is good because we need that amount of time to build up the internationals to that level of passion.

From 1990 to 2005 Queensland won just the 4 series. Could have won 2002 as well had we a goal kicker, but we didn't so it ended up a drawn series. 1 series win every 4 years for QLD, yet Origin didn't die.

QLD unearthed a gold mine of players at the same time as NSW legends such as Andrew Johns were at the end of there careers. QLD is about to have a massive turnover of that core team.
The tide will turn, it always does. Interest is still there, Channel 9 and the NRL marketing division won't let it die. Surprised QLD won this series TBH thought we had too many missing parts.

NSW would have had it back this year with a little more discipline.

NSW can't do things the same way Qld do. They'd be better off picking a 25-man provisional squad, bringing them all together a few times in the months leading up to Origin. Have a drink, have a barbecue, hold light training sessions- so that even a young bloke who's never played before can get to know the blokes in the squad, get familiar with them. Then if he's selected or gets the late call-up, he's already got that bond there.
I meant as 'bs' as it was implied 'favouritism' ergo DCE missed out because Munster simply plays at the Storm when in reality he was always going to slip into the backline easier.
DCE would have played with these guys at some point too in his younger years in juniors but his style didn't suit for a decider.

I think the key is for them to actually like each other, I can pick up on that side that some just tolerate each other.

Ok, you'd mentioned the Storm having junior development programs in Qld which is where I got confused.

On that second point, I think winning the series would go a long way towards them liking each other- depending on who you're talking about. That, again, comes down to the coach. In his book, Joey talks about how one year in Origin camp, Laurie (funny enough) complained to Gus that the first nights' team bonding session didn't go as well as he'd hoped. So Gus gathered the troops together and told them there'd been a change of plans- that he wanted them all to go out that night and not come home until they loved each other- so long as they were ready at 9am the following day to go to training.

Brett Mullins and Jason Croker didn't show up until 9:30 the following morning. Gus called them over to give them a blast and ask what happened, to which Mullins told him that it was 8:30 that morning, they were at the casino playing the tables and he'd looked at Toots and said "You know what, I think I finally worked out I still don't love ya...so lets' have a couple more cards, a couple more drinks and then we'll go home".

Well no, but we were getting noisily impatient - it's since come to light that Mal put titanic names like Locky and Civo (and others ?) on notice after Game 1 '06.

QLD unearthed a gold mine of players at the same time as NSW legends such as Andrew Johns were at the end of there careers. QLD is about to have a massive turnover of that core team.

Maybe the Great Untold Story in all this lies in the boring business of organizational efficiency in identifying and developing ability in a timely manner. Would be interesting to hear from some QRL bods about what's been happening over the last 20 or so years with junior recruitments (and more importantly, retentions). Bottom line is - hopefully - that QLD won't be waiting for Golden Generations to just "pop up" any more, but rather a more steady stream of developed talent. I guess we'll see soon enough.

I'm no part of a team builder, psychologist or suchlike, but I think it a reasonable expectation that a bunch of (well-paid) pros work together effectively to achieve a stated goal with personal stuff laid to one side (hold the nose if that's what it takes). I'd also suggest what's really crucial is for the players to have confidence in each other - you have to wonder if there are subliminal smouldering black thoughts in the NSW dressingroom at the thought of A Certain Number 7 who's supposed to lead them to victory ...

All of a sudden you're not accountable for your words?

Let me spell it out for you dribbler.

The timing of my comments coincides with the creation of the thread. I can't respond to it before it was created now can I?

You acknowledge the game was created for you derpers. Yet somehow stating this fact is sour grapes.

Can't celebrate a win graciously just like other derp posters

The thing is you're talking about the best of the best and each of these guys is probably the big cheese at their respective clubs.
Just like Qld but Qld doesn't seem to put up with diva behaviour.

And yes I wonder how they feel about Pearce, particularly Maloney who would know him well.
I think Pearce is a trophy kid and actually feel sorry for him.
Trophy kids are generally quite talented but never get to their full potential because their parents hinder it.
What was Wayne Pearce doing in the dressing room anyway? He should have been watching the game in the stands with the rest of the families.

I'm sorry to bang on about this but I think there should be a pool of money ie the 30K or 40K each player gets each game and it should be held over and given to the series winner. All of it to be split among the winning team. Put more into if you want.

I can't stomach the perennial losing side getting paid as much as the winner any more. I'd be filthy if I was a QLD player getting the same coin as a bunch of losers.

QLD have now won 11 of the past 12 series.

NSW look clueless. Even with a better team "on paper" they were outplayed and there is no clear way forward for them. QLD have a stranglehold on the whole thing that they wont relinquish. Fair play to 'em but I predict that this is the moment where genuine interest goes out of the concept. It's been coming for a while and astute commentators like Mascord have rightly pointed out that the impact the series has on the overall NRL is skewed.

Anecdotally; I've noticed this within my social circle. Origin used to be a big thing. It's still a thing but years of NSWs failure have reduced the lustre and interest levels, even in this "best series ever", were pretty mellow.

Horse shit.

They were predicting Origins death back when NSW was too dominant too. I think the record ticket prices (with people still packing out the stadium) and the record tv numbers beg to differ with your arguement.

The only thing that really surprises me is that we havent tried to emulate the Origin template anywhere else. Biggest event in the country but absolutley uninterested in trying to reproduce what made it so successful at, for example, an international level or with the Indigenous Allstars team.

We struck gold and have decided that one chip is enough...........
