The punch that cost the Sharks $20,000 - Zappia stands down

Exactly. Plenty of less dubious ways she could've resolved this situation. Taking her story straight to the perhaps most morally bereft news station in the country shouldn't have topped that list.

If you were offered another $20K for the story, I am sure you would have considered it. Until that point, she was more than happy to remain silent on the issue.

Perhaps she could've put that money to good use after her experience, donate it to a woman's shelter/refuge? Actually do something noble with it?

I'm pretty sure she is studying, and thats hard with no money in the bank. Makes it a lot easier to have cash behind you. Giving it away to things like you described is great if you can afford to do so.

Given the initial incident was an accident, some would debate she deserved that money.

Two sides to every story... some would debate whether a boss standing on an employee's toes is an accident.

I know if my boss tried that on, I wouldn't exactly be happy. But he wouldn't try that on, because I'm not a woman, and he doesn't have neanderthal attitudes to women...

interesting reading Ritchie's blog. he's wondering why she refused to talk to the NRL but is happy to talk to channel $even http://blogs.news.com.au/dailyteleg...ts/should_tony_zappia_now_stand_down/desc/P0/

For all we know she may well have tried pursuing it through different channels, didn't feel she was being taken seriously so decided to escalate it into the media and increase her chances of getting action on it.

At the end of it all, regardless of the rights and wrongs of her taping it and then releasing the tape to Ch 7, the bottom line is that Zappia has acted like a sleazeball in his treatment of his staff member, and for that alone deserves to be punted.

Thank god someone said something reasonable. This post is spot on. By page 13 of this thread, people would have had her hitting him.

You serious?

Sure, that would have been admirable, but its not a standard many people are held to. How often do you hear of someone getting an inheritance from a distant relative, or having a good night at the casino, then rushing off to give it all to charity?

Also, maybe that's exactly what she did with the money. Maybe she shook down Channel 7 for some more because she wanted to give it all to Amnesty International.

She's a modern day Robin Hood imo.

I don't think many are debating that. Zappia is a d!ckhead and should be gone. That's a given IMO. Channel 7 on the other hand come out of this glowing in the eyes of the general public, while the station itself basks in the fact they've once again sunken a boot into League.

This is where the media is clever
I assume you saw the re-enactment and now believe that this took place?
Can you imagine if they re-enacted him punching her how much bigger the outcry would be?

Maybe the players and clubs should stop doing things that scream out like targets to be kicked? Solves the problem, easy!

"Maybe the players and clubs should stop"

Isolate the individuals who have wronged the game. Quantify them into a number and then divide that number by the number of players and officials in the game as a whole.

In most cases where someone has done something stupid or illegal or whatever, they've lost their job or suffered punishment. But for the most part, there are people doing the right thing. But that doesn't create ratings and readers now, does it?

Not to mention the other star of the same show who made a sex tape with an ex-girlfriend and has since spread that he has done so.

If an RL player did it, it would be the first news story all week, with calls for said player to be sacked. Horrendous double standards from arguably the worst network.

No, didn't see the story, just going off what people have said on here about its content. So the media isn't really clever imo, just that people are too blinded about league to admit that ourt games participants have to take responsibility for their actions rather than look for someone to blame.

Rather than go on media witch hunts, or blame any woman at the first opportunity, instead I just ask myself whether a person's reported actions are justified and sensible - or just plain dumb and damaging to the game.

I suspect the Cronulla Board will look at things the same way, acknowledge neither the media nor the woman was at fault for Zappia acting like a goose, and give Zappia his marching orders. Gallop has already indicated in today's reports that the NRL expects the club to take action...
