Mail hundred gives NSW hope

A COMEBACK century by opener Greg Mail has given New South Wales a good chance to beat Victoria outright and go clear atop the Pura Cup table.
Mail scored a vital 125 in his side's second-innings total of 6-281, which gave the Blues a lead of 278 runs at stumps on day three at the MCG.
NSW are likely to bat on on Monday and back their strong bowling attack to dismiss Victoria on a last-day pitch.
Victoria drew level on 20 points with NSW by claiming first-innings points on day two, but Blues captain Simon Katich said the team's aim was to chase outright victory, which would put them four points clear of their old foe.
"We're here to play for six points so the declaration will definitely be with that in mind,'' he said.
Mail was a late call-up for this match to replace Ed Cowan, but has enjoyed an excellent game.
He made 43 in the first innings, took the vital wicket of Victoria's David Hussey and batted for most of the day to complete his century.
Mail and Phillip Hughes (51) posted a century stand in the first innings and even though Victoria dismissed the in-form Simon Katich (10) cheaply, they could not prevent NSW building a good lead.
Mail acknowledged being 29 in a side keen to promote youth had made it difficult for him to play regularly this season .
"A week ago I didn't think I'd get another game so it's nice to be here having made a hundred,'' he said.
"I'm not finished just yet.''
Dominic Thornely made up for his first-innings duck with an unbeaten 48. Leg-spinner Bryce McGain took 4-83 for the Bushrangers.
While the Vics will aim to finish off the NSW innings quickly, McGain said Brad Hodge, David Hussey and Rob Quiney, the star of last Wednesday's one-day win, were the sort of batsmen who could worry NSW.
"They've (the Blues) been nailed a few times recently and I'm sure they're sitting there going 'What do we set them?''' he said.
"We've chased down 400, we've chased down 350, so it's a nervous night for them I would have thought if they're setting a target.
"We're out to bowl them out so it's all in our hands and in our control.''
