The Road to the Finals

I'm astounded at some of the misguided information around the permutations of this week's matches - mostly around if the Broncs win. Either everyone thinks that's no chance of happening (fair) or they think the Storm have immunity.

For nrl.com to get it wrong is pretty pee poor. It's not that hard.

Yeah, I don't think I've seen anywhere sum it up as simply as it is - win and we are through, no matter what happens in any other game. Most of them say things like "will probably make it if they win", which is just ridiculous.

Not that it means anything, but I notice Sportsbet has us as the shortest odds to make the 8 out of the three teams - paying $1.90 to the Broncos $2.05, with the Eels well out at $3.75. If it didn't involve the Warriors losing, I'd have a punt at the Eels - surely they are still pretty likely seeing as they just need the favourites to win two games and to knock over the Raiders. I keep trying to convince my Eels buddies of this, but they are convinced they are basically gone. They are more likely getting the results they need this week than we were last week.

Yeah it is. I read NRL.com all the time; they make some boo boos for sure. And this time it was their digital editor who I imagine is quite senior.

The point of difference to that debate will be Ryan Hoffman negating the ' starting the sets' part of rationalising Big Wingers.

It's a genuine factor to consider change.

In English bro...I've had a real long day and the brain is tired..

This image is too big to fit here but it's well worth a click if you're wanting to see all of the scenarios - including the one where we can lose and still finish 8th!

Yeah, we can make the 8 with a loss if:

Parra lose to Canberra
Broncos loss to Storm is 8 points worse than our loss to Penrith.

Broncs and Parra out, Broncs on points diff.

That would truly be a schemozzle of a way to enter the 8. And then storm on to the GF...

And then wake up

Who else has been too nervous to watch a game?

I'm definitely going on Sunday but I'm tempted to do what I did during that the Storm final in '11. After watching six minutes from kick-off, realising it was going to be a tough, close game, I switched off.

Sat around the house alone, and quiet, like a fool. And sober.

Logged onto the NRL site at about midnight, closed my eyes and waited for the homepage to load, then sat there for a few more tortured minutes.

I opened my eyes to see the homepage picture of a figure in white, smiling. I knew we were off to a grand final.

Don't do this. It's easier watching the whole game and its conclusion. It's only a game of football.

Just read the following article on NRL.com, that if Broncos lose 42-34 & Warriors 7-6 (with relevant numbers of tries/goals/field goals), it is still possible for the 8th position to come down to a coin toss!

A masochistic part of me would be quite intrigued to watch that, who would've thought a coin toss (assuming it would play live if it was to happen) could make for tense dramatic viewing!

http://www.nrl.com/finals-hopes-down-to-the-toss-of-a-coin/tabid/10874/newsid/81512/default.aspx

Edit : oops misread it as both teams winning, rather than losing

I definitely wouldn't be watching no coin toss! I'd just log in here and see the first thread title.

Either 'vs Storm semi-final' or 'f**kkkk!!!! See you all next year!!'

The way they talk about it is overcomplicated and ridiculous. Why bother using percentages?

(This is using the NRL.com assumption for #3, I don't actually know this is the rule for certain - it could be who has the highest points scored instead, but I prefer the lowest points against measure)

Measures to rank teams;
1) Who has the most competition Points
2) Who has the highest points difference
3) Who has the lowest points against (instead of a differential percentage - same result but simpler)
4) Who has scored the most tries
5) Other point scoring / Coin toss?

Just using highest points for makes more sense to me (not just because it would benefit us). Or even lowest points against. Using percentages is silly. Honestly though, should probably just have a playoff game if two teams are tied on points and differential.

Watching NRL360 and Sterlo last night and they were all saying that the Warriors rely on the Broncos losing to make the finals. But if the Bronco's win we pass up Storm on f/a if we also win. Are they all getting this wrong or is there a chance we beat Penrith and still don't make the finals?

I was just thinking I wish I could not watch. We really are mental to feel anguish over this - but we do.
I really don't feel like watching tonights Melb V Broncs game even the result is absolutely not crucial for us...

Heard Paul Kent say it on Nrl 360, can't believe no one corrected him. On Sterlo they just wrote us off, we move ahead of Storm on points differential, simple we win we are in.

Watched Souths vs Roosters last night, they're playing at a gear we're not capable of at the moment

I'll go to the game, a rare treat for me this season. We only had that game in Cronulla this season (for Sydney Metro residents).

Just on the finals situation, we're not featuring in Channel Nine's promo for the finals, and yes, those pundits just wrote us off (Sterlo, Paul Kent, et al).

I believe we could be in the eight as early as tonight, if the Broncos get beaten by more than eight points.

Eels beaten tomorrow away to a fired up and improved Raiders (possible)...then a narrow loss to the Panthers and we stay in the eight?

Interesting scenarios, but let's just go out there and win. That'll do it for us.

I see big Dave Taylor's back for the 'Coast? That'll make it interesting there too.

Surprised on NRL360 this wek that Blocker Roach picked us to be in the quarter finals.
Wish I could buy some of what he's on here.

Ahead of their biggest game of the season the Warriors admit they are feeling the pressure, but the message from the playing group is clear: stick together and we will be OK.

The New Zealanders take the field at Sportingbet Stadium on Sunday in the very last game of round 26, meaning they will know exactly where they stand before kick-off.

A win will get them through regardless – as they'll jump either the sixth-placed Storm or the eight-placed Broncos, who play each other on Friday night – while if the Eels lose and the Broncos go down by eight points or more against the Storm, even a loss will see the Kiwi side advance to the finals provided they can better Brisbane's points differential which is currently seven higher than their own.

But prop Sam Rapira said they would leave the mathematics up to others and simply worry about ensuring they put their best foot forward against the fourth-placed Panthers.

"I think it's just a matter of sticking together, staying tight and enjoying each other's company, because once we go over there we are on our own," Rapira said.

"If we perform well and lose you can't really ask for any more.

"It is probably not the ideal sort of situation but it is what we play football for.

"Break it down and it's pretty simple; do our thing and we win."

The Warriors have a couple of factors going against them before a ball is even kicked, with a history of poor performances in do-or-die Round 26 matches dating back as recently as last season.

There is also the memory of the last time they visited Sportingbet Stadium in May 2013, when the Panthers inflicted a club-record 62-6 loss on the New Zealanders.

"We are going over to their home and they are not easy over there," Rapira said.

"We got them back one [a 30-20 win in Round 16] but they put us to shame a bit there with a massive score, we definitely don't want to go out like that.

"I think last year we were in the same situation come Round 26 and we failed miserably at it.

"Obviously this year we don't want to go back into the same situation, the boys have been working hard this week and also just enjoying each other's company, so hopefully we get the job done.

"This year we have new players and a different feel with the boys."

Now in his 10th season as an NRL player, winger Manu Vatuvei said the Warriors' senior heads had sounded out younger members this week to offer help in dealing with the expectations and pressure associated with such a big game.

In previous years Vatuvei said the club had allowed distractions to creep in at this time of year, and suggested the team would go into a virtual lockdown once they arrived at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

"[Avoiding watching the other games this weekend] is part of it, we just know what we have to do… those are the distractions we don't want to the boys to focus on," the 28-year-old said.

"We just want to make sure they are focussing on their job and understanding what we need to do and not other stuff like that we have to win.

"I think [in the past] the boys have already been focussing on after the game, a big holiday or something.

"I think there are distractions there but the team this year is a bit different.

"It doesn't [come much bigger than this] but everyone knows what we have to do."
