How will this impact on others wanting out of a club? For instance, if a good player's manager says to him - "look, Ben Hunt has gotten out of his contract and has signed with this club. I know that you are worth more dough than what you are getting and even though you still have more than two years left on your contract, just ask for a release and do the Hunt thing. If he can do it, so can you and you and you and....".
No. This sort of thing has got to stop. It's like when you buy a house and you apply for a mortgage, you are under contract to pay it off on appropriate terms and conditions and you sign the contract. If you breach that contract, you are penalised and could end up with no house.
The NRL has to do something about these situations particularly the guys wanting to break the longer term contracts. It has become a big joke and a big rort. What is the use of a player signing a contract if the specific terms and conditions are not complied with? If Hunt wants an immediate release, what bloody club has been talking to him and his manager and why isn't his manager penalised for entering into these sort of talks this far out from when Hunt's contract expires?
Asking for a release on compassionate grounds is used a fair bit by players in the NRL and the ex NRL players who go over to the Super League. I can get the Super League guys but not the Aussie contingent. Equally the excuse that the club has failings isn't one that should be accepted as a reason for a player to be granted a release. Just imagine how that will be looked at and the amount of players saying this as a reason to be released from other clubs. It is damned crazy when you think about this whole affair.
If Hunt persists, I don't want him anywhere near the club. He will be a traitor and a person not to be trusted.
