Don't mind those two signings. Thompson isn't generally as poor a defender as we saw in that Knights game. Good player, no world beater, but a good addition to our pack certainly. If we can get Fotuaika a year after for example, then the front row looks so much better than it does now. Sualii will be a good signing for a year, if we want to be competitive next year and attract some talent the year after, he will help us do this. The roosters need to ship someone in their backline off and Billy Smith has stated he's re-signed for next year, so Sualii is a good chance I would think. Plus, if he does come back to rugby league at some point, it puts us in the race for his services in the future. Hope both of these signings can come off.
How could signing Sualli for one year lead to attracting other players to the club when they know he leaves the next year it would be a complete waste of time and money to sign him i think.

The Roosters will shift Allan & Paulo from their backline most likely..but no surprises that will open up $2mill in cap space..supposedly.

I think Sualli is our fullback, Lomax starting ctr, Sloan starts in nsw cup and if hes good enough he can force his way in and Suallii can move anywhere.. these are not bad options.. and as always.. 1 injury and its panic stations already.
He is going to RU (for his big money run that we cannot match, even Roosters could not) after his contract with Roosters finishes end of 2024. Maybe Tedesco!

Because if Sualii was here next year, we are a better team, winning more games, and therefore looking from the outside in a more attractive option to go to. It's not Sualii himself that would attract talent, it is the games he would help us win to make us look more attractive.

Things are that bad that I would take Suali’s help for a year knowing it will be fleeting.

It could add 5+ tries to the season or save us from a spoon. We can then use that year to find a similar expensive and elite player to replace him with in ‘25.

Usually I’d be against it but desperate times call for creative solutions.

He may not be available however of course.

So would I TBRV , trouble is that since the Dragons committed the unforgivable sin of attempting to sign Jason Ryles I simply cannot see Uncle Nick doing us any favours .

In short “ we ain’t on his Xmas card list anymore “ . 😳

When we start hearing how great our current squad and juniors are it is usually cause for concern.

We don’t have even two thirds of a good squad and while a good coach can improve them they have proven year after year to be the most unreliable and unprofessional (not to mention overpaid) players to pull on the jersey. I would not want to coach them for all the money in the world.

Enough has been said about Hunt and while I don’t want us to just roll over and release him weakly, it’s only going to add to dysfunction with him as captain. Blind Freddy can see that.

Love that Shane is passionate and to the point, not some waffling conservative trying to protect himself. Deserves two years to start getting results. I don’t know how we sign/produce 3-5 elite players in that time but that’s what is required.
I tend to look at the standing of players by looking at their history.

Lomax was on the verge of playing SOO before getting a big head and losing standing.

De Belin did play SOO but has since failed to play at that standard.

Ben Hunt selfishly wants to play at halfback when is SOO selection is at hooker.

Su'A is a former SOO edge forward who has been playing well below his potential.

Bird has a problem achieving the required fitness needed to play first grade for the dragons.

Can Flanno improve the above-mentioned players to the extent that they can complete week in and week out at the required level? Things like their attitude, fitness, discipline, game smarts, defense, and pride in the big red V.

Perhaps Suaalli could be convinced to stay longterm if the current rumblings in Aust Rugby grow louder by the day ..
Make him happy...Put some other good signings around him , and more importantly start a winning culture
Ill bet Flanno is agitating with his Manager already re his long term future
At least we would be in a position to afford him , where the sombrero kings have budgetted on him Not being there in 2025

Because Sualli is only on a one-year deal, it gives Sloan time to come up to standard and does not weaken our right side. However, if Flanno wanted to, he could put Sualli at left center, Suli at right center, and Lomax at fullback.

1. Lomax
2. Finau

3. Sualli left center or fullback
4. Suli
5. Ravalawa
6. Amone
7. K Flannigan

8. ? top prop
9. Hunt
10. ? top prop
11. T Couchman
12. Su'A
13. De Belin

14. Bird / Liddle
15. Lawrie
16. F Molo
17. M Molo

So, we need to recruit two props and Sualli. If Bird is unfit to continue, then Liddle at 14. If Ben Hunt spits the dummy, then we will have more than enough to recruit others who may come onto the market.

Sualli was disloyal to Rabbits, Roosters and Rugby League. Don't want him anywhere near the RedV.
If you're being paid $1.6m a year, compared to 700-800k a year, to go and play another sport which you have played before and are already comfortable in playing, what would you do? Almost anyone would take that sort of money. Blame Rugby Australia for offering him a ludicrous contract, not the player

No long-term loyalty is required. It is only a one-year deal and is something that would really help us through 2024.

I don't see how it helps us at all. If you're a team in a so-called "premiership window", with a settled side just looking for a bit extra to go all-in for a grand final run, then yeah you might make a mercenary-like signing in Sualii. We are not that team. We need to be in the process of building towards that window
I agree. Sualii, if he does come which I doubt very much, will not add too much and will revert to playing Dragons footy like they all do when they join us. Sualii will be too costly as well. We really need bigger, better middle forwards who can do the tough work in attack and defence, a taller, stronger, faster winger and a game manager 5/8th like a Keary or Metcalfe.

Sualii has been reported to be causing a lot of unrest to our World Cup Rugby Team because of his high price tag. The Aussies are not likely to go on with things in the Cup after being beaten by Fiji, who have not beaten us since 1954.

Had not beaten us since 1954.

We need time for the likes of Lomax or Sloan to come up to speed during 2024. So Flanno will know if either Sloan or Lomax are suitable for fullback in 2025 or if indeed he needs to put someone else in the position.

We had 10 games that we lost by 6pts or less in 2023

13 wins got you into the top8

We had only 5 wins in 2023

But if we had a top level fullback, how many of those 10 games (that we lost by 6pts or less) would we have lost?
It's hard to say. I reckon the ref's cost us 4 games with dodgy decisions. Having a top level fullback would have made no difference, the ref's and the bunker would still have found a way to make us lose. Then there was the 2 or 3 games where the whole team was flat, Ben Hunt didn't want to be there, and it seemed to rub off on the entire side. The hypothetical top line fullback would have been put off his game as well, so no change there. That leaves 3 or 4 games where having a top line fullback may have jagged us a win. Then again, we had bog average forwards, miserable defence structures, and very limited attack options so I don't think any one player, no matter how good, makes much difference.

Going forward, having a new coach will hopefully make a lot more difference than one new star player, who we probably won't get anyway.

Disagree, as I mentioned he'll help us win more games which will make us a more attractive option. If, for example, the Holmes story is true, we won't be getting him next year, and Sualii is a nice bridge to fill the gap at this stage. In order to become the team you're talking about, we need to attract players, Which also means we need to win more games. What team wins you more games, a team with an elite centre/winger/fullback, or a team with Sloan, Feagai at their current level of development? They can stay at the club and ply their trade in reserves and improve their games there. From all reports Sualii has an incredible work-ethic which may be useful to us as well, might rub off on a few plodders or players who simply don't know what it looks like to train like an elite player/team. Hunt eluded to there being a lot of players who don't train like elite athletes at the club. Whilst he is a good player himself, he is no leader. He sets no standards. He needs someone else in there who can show them what becoming elite looks like. A couple more actually. I doubt we'll get him anyway, but I think it helps our development a bit, whilst also ensuring we're more competitive in the short-term as well.
