Not sure if it's a rumour or wishful thinking but a couple of mates have been saying McGregor was extended on a 2 year deal with a clause if he doesn't make the 8 the dragons can terminate the contract ? Anyone know if it's fact or have any insight ?
It makes sense.
Any half respectable contract would have performance warranties in place and I can't believe that, whoever negotiated McGregor's contract, did not put in a termination option in favour of the club.
I also believe that McGregor would have been very comfortable signing such a contract given the way we were traveling at the time of his extension.
But as we all have endured, the wheels have well and truly fallen off and, there is now a distinct possibility that we will finish outside the 8.
Should that happen, will someone in the club have the balls to terminate MGregor's contract or will they take the gutless, faction appeasing option and keep him on in the hope that Hunt's arrival will somehow transform him into a "career coach" and take us to premiership glory?
My contention has nothing to do with McGregor personally and it should never be about that.
I am sure that he is a nice guy and all the rest of it but, that is not one of the criteria necessary to be an excellent and successful FG coach in the NRL.
Price was also a nice guy who oversaw a disastrous couple of years.
Let's do away with the self admiration element inside the club and look outside for a coach who can take control and drive us forward.
I believe that regardless of the final outcome in 2017, McGregor is just not qualified to coach FG.
Either are his assistants. Let's stop kidding ourselves.
If we hand him another season with an improved roster (read Hunt, Graham and other mystery speedsters that will overhaul our backline) - it will be a waste of an opportunity to make real change and start competing with the better clubs.
