So we are not interested in AJ.
The Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra aren’t interested in signing unwanted South Sydney back Alex Johnston after the Rabbitohs told the premiership-winning flyer that he wouldn’t have a contract beyond this season due to salary cap restrictions.
Johnston’s eight-year tenure with the Rabbitohs will finish at season’s end, opening the door for the former Indigenous All-Star to sign with another club.
The gifted outside back’s preference is to remain in Australia, with his manager Steve Gillis confirming that a stint in the English Super League wasn’t an option.
Johnston has been offered up to St George Illawarra, but the Dragons are looking in another direction and aren’t interested in signing the Rabbitohs winger.
It comes as Souths players expect Johnston to follow in the footsteps of former teammate Adam Doueihi and revive his career at another club after the winger was told to look elsewhere after this season due to salary cap restrictions.
Disappointed Rabbitohs players woke to the surprise news in The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday morning that Johnston is officially on the lookout for a new NRL team.
The La Perouse junior is shattered with the club’s decision but understanding that modern-day rugby league is a business.
Rabbitohs hooker Damien Cook believes Johnston can excel at fullback in another team like Doueihi has since joining the Wests Tigers from Souths this season.
Johnston previously played in the No. 1 jumper at Souths but was shifted to the wing following Latrell Mitchell’s arrival this season.
“If Alex wants to be a fullback then he has just got to put his mind to it and work hard,” Cook said.
“Like we’ve seen with Adam, he has gone over to the Tigers and is playing well there.
“He probably didn’t think he was a fullback until we played him there last year, and now he is doing a great job for the Tigers.
“There is no doubt that AJ can do that as well.”
