on overall form Lawrie has performed better than Vaughan for the majority of this season. PV has felt Safe and in Cruise Mode the past few seasons with little pressure on him to be replaced.Noticed Hook has started him from the bench a few times this year perhaps trying to get him more motivated.
With the pressure well and truly on him now , im hoping we see a really fired up PV to cement his place in the 2022 squad esp with the new cavalry arriving..
I know stats don't tell the full story but I can't see many metrics this season that suggest Lawrie has been much better than Vaughan.

People will say that he takes the tough hit-ups and is tough as nails etc but the problem is that the leading opposition forwards do the same 'dirty work' as well as punching out 150m+ and numerous offloads, attacking stats etc which Lawrie doesn't and never will.

Vaughan has not performed consistently since he has been at the Dragons.
In the end thats why Canberra let him go in the first place.

Vaughan has been the workhorse for the Dragons ever since we lost Graham and JDB . It was he whom had to do the hard yards and without much support from his mates in the pack that and as One Eyed Dragon has pointed out , under the tutelage of the maestro , the effort on a weekly basis has taken its toll .

Still with the return of JDB we may see a return to his previous form when he first joined the Big Red V . To my mind , there would be a couple of others in the pack that would be getting their marching orders before the big boy .

Hypothetical scenario if this were fact:

Vaughan has taken up his 1yr player option, however, another club (say Broncos) are willing to give him a 2yr deal or more, but on slightly less coin. Vaughan will be 31 next year and 32 a short time into the 2023 season. Hard to source a deal at that age, especially if your form is declining.

Broncos are wanting to trade out Pangai, Lodge and I believe Isaako is on the outer along with the maligned Milford.

The Dogs have let go Meaney and DWZ, and missed out on Shaun Johnston. Dylan Napa was originally from Brisbane (didn't play for the Broncos though). Flanagan is out of favour there also and Lachlan Lewis isnt a regular in firsts. Both Napa and Lewis.are off-contract

So, my hypothetical is:
Pangai (Broncos) to Dragons
Vaughan (Dragons) to Broncos
Isaako, Lodge & Milford (Broncos) to Dogs
Napa & Flanagan or Lewis (Dogs) to Broncos.

Broncos get 2 experienced forwards and a half back
Dogs get a winger/fullback goal kicker, a forward in just about a like for like swap and a half back
Dragons get a forward.

Almost seems like a mid-season draft.

Anyway ALL hypothetical and absolutely none of this may happen.

Lawrie hasn't performed better than Vaughan this season or any other season. He averages 100 mtrs a game ( well below what you need from a starting prop ), Vaughan averages 136mtrs. Vaughan is also well ahead on PCM's, and tackle efficiency - he's missed just 10 tackles this year compared to 35 for Lawrie.
Apart from 1 or 2 games earlier in the year Lawrie has been a real disappointment and I think other packs have his measure. The only thing he has going for him over Vaughan is that he's only 24 but still I'd keep the 30 yr old Vaughan over Lawrie any day.

You get what you pay for. We've had enough underachievers in the last 6 or 7 years, better to keep your rep quality men and let the pretenders go, not the other way round.
Correct and wrong. You do get what you pay for.
But then its value for money balancing a cap and roster not 1, not 2 but 3-4 years looking forward. You cant be short sighted. That is what got us in the poo to begin with.
Lawrie is still young as a prop and is probably on low coin. Still worth an investment and has improved this year.
Not saying he is better or at Vaughans level. But Paul is on big money in his 30's.
Put yourself in the club shoes managing your cap and roster and you will see why Hook has started to tinker with it upsetting a few along the way as he promised it would be a bumpy ride
I acknowledge you need also a balance of experience, hard edge etc...but for the right money.
We have to right the knee jerk reactions and money offered via the BOD, Doust, Young Millward & McFlounder in the past 10 years.
Paul had a good year in his 1st, we rushed to extend him on big money.
We paid too much for Hunt, Merrin & Norman and maybe Graham in the end when desperate and signed many a dud that did not last a year in 1st grade.
