I keep saying where are the players going to come from of 1st grade standard when we don’t have enough for 16 teams unless someone or 2 teams fold or 1 relocates
Until reserve grade is looked after and become stronger in conjunction with NRL then will never have enough for expansion of team numbers
A 14 team comp will be close to the mark options outside NRL available to those who don’t cut it rather than reggies here

You're probably right about a 14 team comp producing a higher standard of footy. I'd stick with 16 but tweak it.
On the expansion option I reckon I could put together a second Brisbane team made up of a few current NRL players and the rest chosen from the current 14 QRL teams, that could give the bottom 8 NRL teams a run for their money no problem. If Bennett was their coach they might do even better. But do we want a 17 team comp ? If it were my call I'd drop one Sydney NRL team ( or merge 2 ) and make another relocate to NSW Central Coast and invest in a 2nd Brisbane team. I would not give NZ another franchise when the one they have constantly underachieves despite having great rosters and access to the young talent of all of NZ and the Pacific. Look at their roster now, massive forwards, talented halves and backs, they should be sat in the top 4 from round 1.

Back in the day North Sydney wanted that area NSWRL or higher Power brokers said a Big No, also maybe Newcastle had a say in it as well, in saying that Newcastle League is a basket case anyway very political, infighting.

Greg Florimo tried very hard but zero effect. Even changed the name to Central Coast Bears. You do wonder what really goes on.

There is no point having a second NZ side because it does not work, league is not played in the schools, and is frowned upon by the family hierarchy. That’s why the Kiwis come here to play. As I have said before unless the league is willing to continue to fund the team as they do with all the other News Limited teams it will fail.

Hard to argue with your logic re the underperforming Warriors but sometimes a change can be a stimulus for the better. ATM, the Warriors are alone in Auckland- often, if not always, playing in another country (like now with Covid). The NZ market is deprived of seeing live weekly top level NRL. A South Island team would also provide that rivalry akin to our SOO. Of course, such a change would have to be well managed. We've seen in the past how South African Rugby effectively killed off attempts to establish a League competition there using control of the media and denial of access to grounds amongst other grubby tactics.

I think it would be harder to establish an NRL team in South Island than it was in the AFL heartland of Victoria. The South are very proud of their Union heritage and have you ever been there, there's like 50 kiwis and 4 million tourists in the whole place 😄 . I'm not sure the small market could sustain a NRL team in that part of the world.

Ahh good old Jason Ryles, the walking mistake-ridden penalty magnet. Couldn’t stand him.
I remember being at a game & being shocked by Gasnier, who had only played a few games in 1st grade, was reminding him of "ball security" as he was about to receive the ball from a kick off.

Jaysus, that's some pack they have now. Does he play tomorrow night ? Just our luck eh, DWZ, Townsend and now this and AFB is back and due to regain some form.
NRL.com article saying he'll play his first game as a Warrior Round 17 against the Sharks.

Very interesting news just come out stating that Anthony Milford has been released effective immediately by Brisbane

This is a suprise and I would think that he has been released to join another club this yr

I pray that it is not us lol
Don't need him, Normy still with us.

Not to mention 60 million sheep!- but Christchurch, where a team would be based, is actually on a par with Canberra for population and Dunedin- a short drive to the south- has another 100, 000. Yes, the All Blex are Gods-right throughout the country- but they have so many players over there- some playing both codes as juniors -but staying with Union at senior level because there is no local League team. This would change all that. I feel that the major obstacle wouldn't be so much lack of interest but lack of corporate support.
