I understand that Tyrell Sloan may be on the outer ( club n this forum). He has scored 47 tries in the NRL from 79 games. That is top level scoring rate. A number of tries are due to his blistering speed. Having that extra gear in a dash to the corner against cover defence is a great asset. So we off load him and keep slow wingers….ok.
I pinned so much hope on Tyrell when he first came into grade but he has just shot himself in the foot so many times. So. Many. Times.
He has speed, yes, but absolutely zero footy smarts and his defense has let him (and his teammates) down so much so that you can sometimes watch him and almost predict how he's going to stuff up.
And hard to believe but he's been in the NRL 5 seasons now - and has showed practically zero forward progress.
I like the kid and would dearly love him to succeed but if 5 seasons isn't enough time then how much is?
I defended him for a lot of his time in the first few years but I was wrong. Giving him a spot in an NRL team that's struggled for 7 years without a finals appearance simply because he can run fast seems ridiculous to me. Speed is useless to us if he can't tackle or make a smart decision when he's on the field.
Maybe he'll come good. Maybe. But 5 years doing exactly the same things on a regular basis leads me to agree with the club that maybe it's wise to give up and let another team take him on.
Personally I'd rather a slower winger who makes his tackles, catches the ball reliably and gains good yardage out of our territory - three things a good winger does and 3 things that Tyrell kind of sucks at.....
And if he does get a chance this year and finally kills it - I'll be ecstatic for him - but I can't see it happening.
