The Simpsons unveils new opening credits

After 20 years and 429 episodes, cartoon television's most iconic opening sequence has been given a makeover.
The opening credits for The Simpsons has been reworked to coincide with the television show's premiere in high definition.
And it comes complete with a none-too-subtle Bart writing "HDTV is worth every cent" on his school blackboard while the boxy old television set in the Simpsons’ family living home is replaced with its upmarket, flat-screen cousin hanging from the wall.
The gist of the opening sequence remains the same — each of the Simpsons family members races home through Springfield to gather on the couch — a number of details have been changed.
When the opening frame zooms in from clouds to reveal the town of Springfield, school bullies Jimbo and Kearney can now be seen sawing the head off the Jebediah Springfield statue in the town square.
Spaced-out school bus driver Otto decides to swallow the glowing nuclear rod that lands in his bus after Homer throws it from his car, while Maggie now has a run-in with her despised mono-browed baby nemesis at the supermarket.
Several characters not seen in the old sequence, which was last changed in 1990, are also now introduced to viewers in the opening credits.
Sideshow Bob takes a swipe at archenemy Bart with a sword, the Rich Texan character is seen firing his pistols into the air and a weary Apu is seen cradling his baby octuplets.
The Simpsons family first appeared in a series of animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show in April 1987.
Two years later the half-hour series was a worldwide hit, before The Simpsons Movie grossed over $800 million worldwide last year.

To be fair it hasnt been 429 eps of the same sequence, the first season was different (bart stole the bus stop and everyone missed the bus).

Cool, still love the simpsons. Dont know how much difference a flat cartoon would look in HD though... (i still find normal footage in HD underwhelming)

The Simpsons is still consistently fantastic.

It's become vogue to say that the new episodes "aren't funny" but it's still light years ahead of the overrated muck that is The Family Guy and American Dad.

Season 20 of the Simpsons is starting to get back to their glory days IMO.

Even then seasons 15-19 were still funnier than most cartoons out there. Family Guy crammed all its funny into 3 seasons and is now getting by on "shock" value and randomness. South Park went that way for 5-6 seasons but has since improved markedly in the last couple years.

American dad is just sh*thouse.

Futurama was damned funny. They should have made more of that show.

Agree with a lot of that but love South park. The newest seasons are lacking.

For me, the first ~ 12 seasons or so of The Simpsons will never be beaten but after there, it went downhill very quickly.

I dunno...I thought Ralph becoming president and Sadgasm pretty awesome last season...it has it's moments but nowhere near as awesome as it once was.

I always tend to think that they quit while they were ahead. Keeping in mind of course that Futurama was meant to take over the Simpsons. Matt Groening probably couldn't handle the work load of constantly making 2 cartoon series' after 5 years of doing so.

Simpsons is sh*t now. Seasons 3-12 or so are still some of the funniest TV ever. The new ones are boring and have terrible plot ideas

They've tried to introduce new characters in recent seasons (Cat Lady + Rich Texan, both seen in the credits), and they simply aren't as funny as the classic characters.

Rich Texan (appears first in season 5) and Cat Lady (season 9) are hardly new characters.

They were one offs though. I don't believe they were ever intended to become regular characters when they first appeared in the series. To me it just looks like they ran out of ideas and had to try and had to bring back an old joke.
