It's about time we came to some kind of consensus on the issue of Brian Smith's retention. Some have believed that he should go. Others maintain that he should be signed for life. Most swing somewhere in the middle.

The Smithometer, therefore, is a measure of our position at seasons ewhereby we should retain Smith for 2005. Simply, it is the goal that we reckon he should achieve to get our backing for next year. We'll take an average after we have all cast our vote. It should be interesting where it ends up.

State where you believe the Eels should be before you are satusfied that Smith should be retained for next year.

I'll start first.

I believe we should sack Smith UNLESS we win the 2004 premiership.

Your vote?

Isn't the horse dead yet?

In all honesty changes do need to be made. Whether or not they are made is up to those that can force a change.

Given the talent he has attracted next year, I believe he should be given first crack to use it next year.

Also, given that I dont believe mid season sackings are a good thing, I guess that means I think he should stay until the end of next year.

Also....if Smith wasn't so successful in recruiting for next year, I'd probably be reviewing my positon as stated above.

No, it is for 2005! Example - I reckon he sould be punted at the end of this season. If we win the comp, I'll change my mind.

but is'nt he already contracted for next year. if so the question should be for 2006

He is on contract until 2006. It seems apparent that due to his high salary the club won't pay him out so they will keep him in the coaching role (at the very least) until it runs out.

That's illogical. This season is basically a write off. There's no point in talking what Smith can do for the rest of the year because he can't do much. You could put any coach in his shoes at the moment and nobody would be able to guide Parramatta to the 2004 premiership.

We have a better side for next year and ideally i'd like to see us make the top 6. Though i'll be happy with top 8 as long as the effort is there and it looks like we'll improve the following year. If Smith can't guide us to the top 8 next year then his time is up, he's had enough chances.

The question relates to what is acceptable, given the team he has, and the history he has with the club. It's not illogical at all. If Smith can't do much, we should get someone who can. The question relates to the cut off point for wether we keep him or not.

I voted top 6 - as in 2nd round of the finals.

Having said that I don't believe we will get that far, nor do I believe that he will be sacked. The best I am hoping for is that Smith is forced to change his assitants.

I'll be disappointed if we end up with another losing season (extremely likely) and Fitzgerald pats Smith an the back and says "Don't worry, you'll do better next year, but if not, their's still 2006. #-o "

No matter what, he should be retained. The Club signed a contract that binds them to keeping him employed as Head Coach until the end of 2006. Australians don't cut and run, we cop the bad on the chin and keep soldiering on.
