Smith to "coaching director", "director of football" whatever you want to call it in 2005/6, thus honouring contract. Smith retains recruitment and development role across grades, and gets to get his mug in the media more often (ie stuff he seems to like). Club could then hand the week to week reins of coaching first grade (game plans, motivation, training drills etc) to someone else eg a current assistant coach like JT, or bring someone in/back for that role (eg Anderson).

A lot of "older" coaches these days are opting for that umbrella type role eg Gus, Shaun McRae (at Hull). It seems the way of the future, since it will prolong the pay-cheque for the older coaches and extend their careers. That's how we make the change and make it soon, without needing to end contracts.

For mine, second week of finals this year, and Smith deserves to keep his direct hands on first grade for 2005. It's what I've said since the end of last year's season, so I'm still sticking with it.

The question relates to what is acceptable, given the team he has, and the history he has with the club. It's not illogical at all. If Smith can't do much, we should get someone who can. The question relates to the cut off point for wether we keep him or not.

The question isn't acceptable because you're not giving the bloke much of a chance with only 7 games remaining this season. If you'd asked this question at the beginning of the season then it would be appropriate. There's no point in suggesting a cut-off now when there is no chance of making that cut-off.

some donkeys never give up cant stop flogging the dead horse as far as im concerned smith will be here next year and nothing is gonna change it we made good signings this year with smith on board so maybe these players what to play under Lord Brian Smith but some how i think if we fail to make the play offs next year with this side then Smiths days as eels coach will definitley be over.

Eels Dude i agree with your chain of thoughts. Whats the point of saying now, 7 rounds out from the finals when we are 2 wins out of the top 8, that we should have a cut off period for the premiership?? You could put EVERY NRL coach at Parra and we wouldnt win the premiership this year. If we lose this weekend to Melbourne it is impossible for us to even make the 8, unless there are a lot of upsets with teams 6-8 losing to teams 10-15.
The new players have signed knowing they will be playing under Smith, why would you sack him? Whilst i reckon we should have had a top 8 finishing team this year, no matter where we end up finishing i would say keep Smith for next season. If he doesn't deliver with Tahu, Riddell, Morrison, Stringer, Robinson and whoever else, then punt him if we dont make the 8 next year.

NOT MUCH OF A CHANCE? HE'S HAD 8 BLOODY YEARS!!!!!!!!

I believe that if Smith doesn't make the semis, he doesn't deserve the chance. I can't understand why you are so confused about the question!!!!!

The point of the question is lost (or ignored) on Smith fans.

Earlier in the season we discussed how Smith should go to retain his job for 2005. Since the signings of Ridell, Tahu etc, a lot of people have given up on that, and seem happy with his retention. This question is designed to reflect upon the original discussion.

You may think it's unfair to suggest that Smith have to win the comp thisyear. I agree - if last week was his first coaching assignment. It clearly wasn't!. Parramatta have arrived at this position under his tuition over 8 years. To suggest that he hasn't been given the chance to win in 2004, or even make the 8, is utterly rediculous!

Not long ago, we were on the verge of Smith's exit. Twas after 5 losses on the trot, and a flogging by Saints reserves. Since then, we have won 3 from 6. Not enough improvement to change anything, but just enough to rally the SMith lovers into some sort of movement.

To me, Smith finishing 8th is not good enough. If we are past that point of possibility - that's bad luck. Therefore, the question asks at what level should Smith be retained. If that level is now unachievable, tough.

But is it down to what you believe anymore Misty? Or what any of us on here believe? It is evident that the more noise people make about Smith getting the sack the stronger Denis seems to back him.

There is an obvious need for change in some way, shape or form whether it be a new coaching staff altogether or Brian moving to the "coaching director's" seat but we did this poll earlier this year, late last year etc etc and its not made one iota of change.

Most of us already believe some changes are needed....... and we've gone through the process to do it.

Misty quit with the shit....... poll to gauge opinion? Mate if you need a poll to gauge it than your not as bright as I give you credit for. I am not a Smith lover - f**k even HJ sometimes admits that Smith needs to go.....

CHANGE IS NEEDED - I have been sprouting that for quite a while Misty but its still hammered into your skull that I think Smith should stay....

Fair enough, but I still think you're asking the question far too late.

It's unfair because you're not giving him the chance to respond to the question. If you want to talk about the present then you shouldn't be bringing the past 8 years into the discussion. Smith had a chance to win the comp this year but it is not going to happen. You've created this poll saying their should be a cut-off to retain him this year, since our season has pretty much been decided already then what's the point off putting in a cut-off NOW.

No-one here is a "Smith-lover". Those who support Brian Smith just support the club and everything that comes with the club, I think you should do the same. Finishing 8th is not good enough? Well i'd be quite happy to finish 8th given our current position, if you're not happy with 8th then how you gonna feel if we finish 13th?

And good post eels fan, couldn't have put it better myself.

Maybe I am thick, Colonel, but if you reckon it's cut and dried what people think, your in the dunces class right next to me! The Smith opinion changes each week, with a win or a loss, a signing or a departure. Plus, opinion is divided - and the poll shows that.

You sound like you should conduct a poll on whether I should conduct a poll. But please don't tell me what my motivation is, I think I am in a better position than you to decide that.

EELS DUDE, Smith has every chance to respond, by loggin on here and voicing his opinion! And since when has a poll here needed to be run by Parra front office? Do all the 'bag Dykes/Peterson/Vella' threads have to give the subject a chance to respond?

BTW, you think I should automatically support everything involved with Parra. I prefer to see Parra WIN, and the best people put in place to achieve it! Some of you would support Fred the deaf cleaner if he was in charge! The difference with us is that I am not in bliss automatically because Parra has a coach. I want the best available coach, because my team is the best team - it deserves the best. I canot see how you fail to grasp that.

Putting Smith's employment above the good of the club is being a Smith lover. And yes, there are plenty of Smith lovers in existance!!!

I'm not talking about respond in written presence, what I was referring to he that he isn't being given a chance to prove himself in regard to the ultimatum you have given him.

If you want to see Parramatta win then talk about them in a positive light. If you just want to support them while they're winning then go cheer for the Roosters for a few seasons and come back once we're a winning club. If you aren't supporting the players and coach then all you're supporting is the name 'Parramatta'.

Nobody is putting Smith's employment over the good of the club, I think for the good of the club they need to stick by Smith for another year. The players we've signed have partially joined because of Smith, and the players at the club currently support him.

I'm not giing Smith an ultimtum. I'm polling this messageboard!!!!

If you want to see Parramatta win then talk about them in a positive light.
This statement underlines your stupidity! We were ALL positive last week, and Parra still lost in Townsville!!!!!! I'd rather se Parra win than take the approach that you advocate - ie jump for joy even if we get hammered!

And don't tell me how to be a Parra fan. I'm sure your 'put up with everything' approach doesn't work. I'd prefer to see Parra sucessful, thank you.

You are giving him an ultimatum. You're saying unless Smith wins the comp this year then he should be sacked.

And when am I jumping for joy when we get hammered? I'm doing nothing of the sort. We all want to see Parramatta successful, but continually bagging the coach is not going to achieve anything.

If enough of us do it for long enough, it might get him sacked. ;-)
