Regarding being surprised at the roster, they would be talking about the non-NRL (and hopefully future-NRL) players in the club. These are the guys that allow you to make the tough decisions on overpaid NRL players in the roster. Without them you are stuck paying overs just to field a 17 man team.

It is also extremely difficult judging most players just by watching them play, because the team nature of the game makes it nearly impossible to isolate a player's performance unless he is a genuine star or genuinely not up to first grade. That's why players are best evaluated at training, and why the 17 picked to start the season often surprises the fans; because our judgement is limited to what we think we've seen of the player during games. However the coaching staff have all off season to develop drills to isolate and test a particular facet of a player's performance. Coaches at other clubs (including the incoming coach) don't have that luxury; they are stuck with watching match footage.

There we go boom first big move at Raiders for stuart like he did at Eels was start the clean out and bring in big name players, only difference is that Raiders have plenty more cap to work with then what he had at Eels where there was just way to much rubbish to take care off.
