This is a good point. AFL's two new teams is now a $400 million black hole in AFL's last tv deal income. The ARLC won't have that drain on its tv money. That's a lot of money to make use of.

Maroons and Ratten stand tall in a week of crushing pressure

IN a week where sport was X-rayed and the oddest things discovered, one condition needs no further research. The dominance of rugby league in Queensland and NSW grows and does not stutter under the splurge of AFL money and marketing.

The third State of Origin match, a one-point body wrestle of violent sport, confirmed that rugby league possesses a hold over the nation that will only grow and not diminish. The three-match series is Australia's premier sporting event. Bigger than the Melbourne Cup, even bigger than the Ashes.

The AFL's investment in second teams in Queensland and NSW will now clearly draw more than the budgeted money. More than $200 million will not get the AFL to half-time in the fight to secure the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney Giants. The AFL's privately acknowledged war chest of $400m will be drained to the last cent.

There were heroes left and right in Queensland's win but Cooper Cronk's execution of technique and temperament to secure the match was sport distilled to its very essence. A three-match series reduced to a moment.

I don't think it's a shock that the new AFL teams are costing more than they thought they would. They don't have a Melbourne supporter base like the Swans or Lions to prop them up and they aren't getting near the crowds the AFL would have expected. i think there will be at least one Melbourne AFL club merged with them.
Hopefully the ARL doesn't make the same mistake and try Adelaide again. With Melbourne and Perth to support Adelaide would be too expensive.

Positive is we have new expansion areas wanting a team so will require a fraction of the AFL investment to get our capital city exposure improved. Adelaide will happen eventually. After WA we should be investing in NT. small population but for a small investment RL can make it it's own. NT at all age groups have been getting stronger year on year and have now overtaken Vic in the states championship comps.

Agree that the introduction of GWS and Suns was a huge strategic blunder by the AFL. They should have stuck the money into grass roots development instead. Any money that the 2 extra teams may have leveraged from the last TV deal will easily be chewed up for no benefit to the AFL.

They could have given $100 million each to the Swans & Lions plus still had another $100 million for juniors & schools plus $100 million to sign up another 50 top NRL & Wallabies stars.

Per Brad Walter's article in today's SMH:

Of the 4.04 million viewers around Australia who tuned into Origin III on Wednesday night, the most important to the ARLC's hopes of matching AFL's $1.2 billion TV deal were the 421,000 the game attracted in Melbourne. Not only did the audience eclipse the previous highest Origin ratings figure for Melbourne of 330,000, set in Origin II, it was also higher than Channel Seven usually attracts in the city for its coverage of AFL matches on a Friday night, with last Friday night's Hawthorn-Carlton clash drawing an audience of 344,000. The previous Friday night's Geelong-Sydney match attracted 405,000 viewers for Seven in Melbourne, while the June 15 game between St Kilda and Adelaide was watched by 308,000. The Origin III ratings figures, which were the second-highest for any sporting event after the 2005 Australian Open tennis final, have put paid to suggestions AFL has a greater national appeal.

Can't help but cynically think that the timing of those Nein ads talking up their coverage of the game and all that "home of RL" shit is a little too coincidental. Not sure why they feel the need to convince the general watching public when it's the ARLC they need to impress. They should spend more time and money giving proper coverage instead of putting together fluffy self promotional ads like that. Of course giving money and plenty of it is especially and imminently required.

On another note, having had a rare weekend off and without having Fox to watch I have realised just how much VFL is on free to air TV compared to RL. That there are two games compared to none on Saturdays alone is a disgraceful situation.

I see it as a desperate attempt to try to convince the public, the IC & themselves that they are the only ones who can do it.

Comes across like boyfriend who has treated his stunning GF like shit for yrs & now he looks like losing her to someone who will treat her like she deserves, they are basically begging for another chance/no one will treat you like i do ,blah blah blah.

Die Nine.

Rugby League is awesome.

We will get a bumper deal above expectations.

My prediction of what that will look like-

Friday Night Game - 1930 Live Free to Air and Foxtel
Saturday Night- 1730 Live Foxtel
Saturday Night- 1930 Live Free to Air and Foxtel
Sunday Day Game- 1400 // Warriors Home games. Live on Foxtel
Sunday Day Game- 1400 Live on Foxtel
Sunday Day Game- 1600 Live on Free to Air and Foxtel
Sunday Night Game 1830 Live Free to Air and Foxtel.
Monday Night Game- 1900 Live on Foxtel.

On Long Weekends and School Holidays- One of the Sunday games is moved to a Thursday Night Game- 1900 / Or day game.

All games will be in a fixed schedule.

They won't scrap the Friday double header, will they?

It's perfect for capturing both Sydney and Brisbane markets.

You are right.

Maybe one live on Fox and the other live on nine and then nine can still show the second game delayed. NSW would still get the Sydney game live on free to air and the QLD get the live game free to air.

Only chance of Friday night double header being cancelled is if we get another Brisbane team and they can schedule 1 Brisbane team every Friday night against a Sydney club.

I predict 2 Fridays to stay FTA, One sunday FTA till 2015 when expansion will see two live games on a Sunday. All games live on Foxtel. This would be the stauts quo event

or if something radical happens I could see
2 Friday FTA
1 Saturday FTA
2 Sunday FTA
Monday FTA
split over two FTA providers

with Foxtel getting all games live at a reduced price

Scenario 1 is far more likely imo.
