Expansion decisions are in the wind but may not be what wannabe clubs want to hear

Potential new franchises will soon get an answer on NRL expansion - but it's unlikely to be the one they're hoping to hear. Sin Bin has been told the ARLC is likely to make a definitive call on whether to expand in late August, around the time the television rights deal has been thrashed out. Should they decide to increase the number of teams, prospective franchises will be given four or five months to put in bids with a view to NRL entry in 2015. However, it's becoming increasingly likely the status quo will remain and they will have to wait longer still. While the broadcasters are always looking for more quality content, it's believed - at least in initial discussions - their appetite for more games isn't matched by a dollar commitment that would make new clubs feasible. The commission is also mindful that most existing clubs are running at a loss and extra teams would only further dilute the playing talent.

lol at NRL once again being run by TV execs rather than the game itself. AFL adds two teams no one wants in time for the new TV deal to start and demands $150mill for them, NRL asks please sir can we expand our game? The more things change the more they stay the same. Of course TV are going to say we'll keep what we've got and pay you less. It should not be there choice. The 9th game from 2015 should be a given and should be part of the sales pitch the ARLC is making. It opens up a real opportunity for one more FTA game which would gve an opportunity for 2 FTA providers possibility. I hope the rest of the negotiations are going better than this part if it is true!

no but I do know if the NRL had any balls they would have announced expansion in 2011, two new teams would be starting up next year and we would be demanding maximum $ value for the next 5 years out of the TV deal for the rights to a 9th game featuring two teams that add value to the TV viewership. Same way Gallop wouldn't have taken the easy $3mill from gambling and would have gone in with racing NSW and now be reaping an extra $10mill a year for the game.

Why would he bother with a comeback for you?

2ndly how can the IC be blamed for not announcing expansion in 2011..

You are possibly the biggest whiney bitch on here .
Why dont you give it a rest until you see what the outcome of TV rights & expansion reveals.

Not at all but this rumour is getting stronger and from a number of sources. I've been a RL fan long enough to not be dissapointed or surprised by anything the game does!

I'm not blaming the ARLC, I'm talking about the people running the game in 2011. This is a board for discussing and debateing stuff. Be a bit quite if nothing got talked about prior to a decision being made! Don't like my views, there is an ignore option.

I understand why you might be frustrated or fearing the worst, but all logic doesn't support any ridiculous notion or rumour that additionals teams in the NRL won't result in additional TV revenue ... Especially when you take into account what happened with the AFL's expansion into two areas without any Logical reason that would lead to more revenue. New team in Perth and Brisband would be 100 times more likely to lead to more TV revenue.

Just have a bit faith. We now have professionals leading the way who are much less likely to fall for any propaganda like this. And that what it is. Propaganda.

You'd laugh at the game missing a great opportunity to grow because you don't like someone you've never met? Some RL fan you are.
